Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Great intros and some of Eddie’s best licks and chops. Would’ve loved to hear both “Women in Love” and “Mean Streets”. Mean Streets is balls to the walk, in your face song and I love the tone Eddie sets with it. Women in Love is just so melodic. Two of my favorite DDR era songs.

I've always said...people marvel at his lead playing, which they should, but neglect his rhythm playing. He's equally as amazing on rhythm as on lead. He's the full package! Problem with most music today is that people concentrate only on the lead and cannot write interesting articulate brilliant rhythm. I could listen to him without him ever playing one lead run and STILL be extremely in awe! Same for Randy, Paige, Iommi, Cantrell...I'll end it here. Thanks for this bro. Learned something new too...about his using the V. Thought I knew everything about him. Guess not. How u getting your sound? I likes! Not a fan of his Stealth. That's only because, I think him and his Frankensteins were so good together. Match made in heaven by the Gods. It's like when a dad brings home a perfect perfectly great woman to replace your mom, The Greatest woman ever. The new woman is awesome but your mom is awesome'r. Lmao

Thanks bro, for the well thought comment. I totally agree about the rhythms. Compare him to someone like George Lynch. To me, and I love George's solos, his rhythm playing is usually pretty boring. Therefore, whenever I hear Dokken, I just skip to the solo LOL. With Eddie, the rhythm playing is almost always great... well, and the songs are always great with VH :) ... As for the guitars, I understand what you are saying. The Frankies will always be what I picture Ed playing, as much as I love the Wolfies.

Some of my favorites are included here for sure. As odd as it may sound, I enjoy playing them on acoustic. Muting adds a whole lot to those notes and chords on acoustic. My guitarist friends just shake their head. The non musicians nod their heads. On 5150 I play a modified version (less chunk a chunk, but still chunky) in the lowest fret position for D. You know, at the nut and first three frets. I play the entire song, rhythm part only. After decades of playing self taught bass in and out of bands, when KZbin came along and I began watching dudes like you cover songs, it was the first time I was able to watch and learn 6 string chord shapes, picking and strumming patterns, at my pace. At one point I said, "I can do that!" Months later with a cheap acoustic I was playing all my favorite 80's riffs. I owe you a big thanks!

@@PDXguitarfreak While we're talking EVH, I remember years ago someone asking Ed where he got his rhythm style, and he answered that because they were essentially a cover band for years, he began to search for ways to incorporate the other instrument parts of a song (keyboard, horn...) other than just guitar, or to enhance the bottom end by emphasizing the root note as part of a riff. That combination defines his style. You hear that all over his early playing, which was then followed by many other 80's guitarists. When I started playing 6 string and learning parts, my tendency was/is to first establish the root bass note (thinking like a bass player), then build from that. I love EVH's playing for that reason. I get what he's doing musically.

As usual, ridiculously good playing. You easily could be in a band like The Atomic Punks or the like. My list of VH openers I really like that weren't covered here (you hit several of the best though, IMHO). 1. Me Wise Magic (hidden gem in my opinion) 2. Women in Love (tap harmonics, awesome tone) 3. Humans Being (don't dig the vocals but the guitar in this one is killer) 4. Pleasuredome (another great guitar track with questionable vocal choices) 5. Mean Street (iconic) 6. Girl Gone Bad (more harmonic badassness) 7. Sucker in a 3 Piece (Eddie is also king of the pick slide in my opinion) 8. Cabo Wabo (one of my all time fav Hagar tracks) 9. Big River (work up of that old demo Big Trouble, but killer guitar riff on this) 10. Hang em High (has that I'm the One vibe)
@PDXguitarfreak

That's a great list Calvin! You are one of the few people I have ever heard to acknowledge Eddie's pick slides, and I TOTALLY agree. Not just the pick slides, but the way he does those fast slides down (or up and down) the E string while playing riffs. He does it quite a bit, and it always accentuates the riffs so well LOL. :)

YES man your content always delivered and there probably something we both agree on and that is : the classics are great sure , iron man , whole lotta love , heartbreaker etc etc and in this scenario I cant stand seeing lists of riffs that everyone and their grandma would know so a well known "overplayed" list would look like; 1. Unchained 2. Panama 3. You really got me 4. jump 5. Runnin with the devil *dont get me wrong I love all these but there's nothing underrated about them* it would be cool to see you do *a part 2 but of your fav underrated VH gems*! . Mine would probably be : 1. The full bug 2. Good enough 3. Dirty movies (the greatest in terms of Eddie's most underrated drop D groove imo!) 4. Without you ( lotta hate for that album but the spankin groove in that bridge /breakdown before the solo is just fire!) 5. The live bootleg cover of Led Zeppelin's *hots on for nowhere* yes look it up here on youtube, I loved that take from their clubbing days , quality is shot of course but for what it is I think it shows they had already captured lightning in a bottle together even back in those early days! . Hope you end up seeing this msg what would your underrated riff list looks like ? Give me a hint pdx 😉 haha thanks again for this awesome content keep it coming, cheers from Niagara Falls canada and stay safe/healthy where you are ! 🙏🤟😊 - Adam

Hey Adam, I completely understand what you are saying. There are many Van Halen songs such as Panama that I usually don't listen to because they are so overplayed. However, I still love playing them, as strange as it sounds LOL. As for VH tunes that don't get enough love, here's a few on my list: Outta Love Again (love the groove and solo), Take Your Whiskey Home (I suppose it does get love, but not enough), Could This Be Magic (It just makes me smile every time), EVERYTHING on Fair Warning that gets ignored (which is more than half of the album), and The Trouble With Never (I just really dig the main riff/groove). :)

I wasn't a fan of 5150 & ou812 but lately, been really into learning the keyboard parts for the guitar. The live album is pretty cool too.

Honestly, if OU812 had producer/engineer Andy Johns behind the sound I think way more people would love the album. In my opinion it has the least amount of songs to skip.

I've seen several videos exactly like this but nobody played Good Enough. that's one of my personal favorite riffs, and I'm surprised it's not being given more attention.

Thanks! I am using a Line 6 Helix processor (guitar into Helix into computer). The onboard effects used, depending on the song I played, are chorus, flanger, delay and reverb). :)

Drop D featuring Eddie's Leggatos. I figure that was the origin for the title and probably David who came up with it since he wrote the lyrics.
