Bro I think this has been one of the best compression videos on plug-ins I’ve ever seen
@lastcall99985 жыл бұрын
The most eye opening (ear opening? :P ) explanation was your Waves one, where you lead us to understand the "for you and I" after the F, when it gets out of compression, "for you and I" don't lose energy, and that is so important since it's the last bit of a line. Also same explanation you reveal that's how a REAL LA 76 sounds/behaves. When we have a guy like you noticing things (was gonna say "small" but we know they are not), that clearly knows what he's doing and has lots of experience, we can finally feel educated. (for me vocals is the most important thing to get right). Thanks so much MixbusTV. P.S. If only Waves (or any developer) explained their plugins as well as you :P

waves 1176 its one of those plugins that you think you dont need until you struggle with 20 other compressors. I stared using the Red 3compressor from Focusrite on my mix bus even before knowing thats what CLA uses most of the time ...but man. It makes the mixes sound so good punchy and clean. loving it
@donnythompson4084 жыл бұрын
The T-Racks Opto isn’t an emulation of the Focusrite Red 3... the Focusrite Red 3 is a VCA, not an Opto as the T-Racks shown here is. I think part of the confusion over the T-Racks Opto being an emulation of the Focusrite Red 3, is because the T-Racks Opto’s GUI is presented as being very similar to the metallic red that the Focusrite Red 3 hardware is. It’s an honest mistake to make, particularly for those who have only ever heard about the Focusrite Red 3, but who have never used one. FWIW 🙏

CLA-76 followed by CLA-2A, sometimes also MV2, is my favorite for modern pop/EDM/trance
@xaosnox5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, for that kind of music you don't need anything very good. You can get away with the garbage that CLA would never dream of using on a mix but puts his name on to bilk little kids and musical masturbators who make noises all by themselves in a basement out of their lunch money. But, if you're recording real instruments played by living people, the UAD-2 emulations of the 1176 and LA-2A are the only in-the-box plugins that imbue the organic tones of real music with the richness, warmth, heft, and openness of the real things. Satin and Presswerk from u-he and the Klanghelm collection are beyond impressive and might even make pop/EDM/trance sound a little musical, so should be avoided like dragons in those genres.
@mavicsofficial5 жыл бұрын
X S Sorry to say so, but you sound like an old grumpy relic (and I know a few of them in the music industry) 😉 I use UAD myself, but the magic lies not within the plugins, but rather how the plugis are used (ie the producer/mixer) 😉

And one more thing (totally off topic from vocals and compressors)... Have you tried the new plugin from Submission Audio called Eurobass II? It's a virtual instrument for bass and sounds really amazing. I usually don't like stuff like that, but if you have the opportunity to ditch your bass player, it's totally worth it (just kidding, but Glenn Fricker might be serious about it)... Ola Englund has a demo of it on his channel.

The MJUC, like all the Klanghelm plugins, is extraordinary. That enhanced Distressor sounds interesting. I sure hope you cleaned those pops out before it was released! I was cringing every time one was about to hit, and I have an AC unit going full blast about 6 inches from my head. I don't know what the fuss is about MV2. It's a dullard's leveler. I much prefer Pro-MB because the sound can be shaped by upward/downward expansion/compression. Yes, you have to use more than two sliders, but you can flatter the character of whatever you're working with and prepare it to fit perfectly in the mix. People tend to think of it as more of a mix buss or mastering tool, but it's so great at being the first thing that touches the signal after the preamp. But nothing can cover up all the pitch correction artifacts on that vocal. We're dangerously close to T-Pane territory. Why can't people sing any more? Not even Klanghelm or UAD could put enough polish on that to make it sound human. When I was on the other side of the mic, you would have been laughed out of a studio if you were that off pitch and completely unoriginal. Engineers need to grow some balls and start being discriminate about what they will do to make someone sound moderately un-horrific.

I reckon if you sum all the vids on this channel pertinent to compression, that other than the going away and actually getting experience from using the different models, you can find everything you need to know about the topic, without the innate problems associated with learning just the odd 'one-trick-pony' applications that so many other channels put out. Learning how, when, and why to use compression is the most important topic, so you don't want to simply slam it in and squash the shit out of things, because you think that's what's expected

Thanks David, great video as always. Have you tried the Waves Kramer Pie or the u-He Presswerk? How do you feel about them? As far as I've understood, the Arousor doesn't have an opto mode (yet). The 10:1 is just an additional ratio. On top of that, if you wan't to emulate the Distressor ratios, you should be picking the next higher ratio on the Arousor (4:1 on Distressor - 6:1 on the Arousor). Can anybody confirm or correct me if I'm wrong?

David, what Comp would you recommend for a male vocal with a heavy mid range voice, using a tube mic? I'm using the Telefunken Copperhead.

I would probably change the mic before trying to fix it with a comp, I'm not a fan of that mic. I'd suggest the JZ V67 you'd have a much closer to final sound than with that mic you have now. But in any case, probably the successor.
