I'm especially fascinated by the weird connection between the LDS church and MLMs, seeing as I live in the SLC area and DoTerra And YL are both headquartered here... it's really weird to run into someone who isn't and hasn't been in one, both, or multiple other MLMs. I'd love your unique opinion on it.

Another bait and switch is when you try to turn them down by saying "I'm not a salesperson". They'll say: "Me neither, I actually would be terrible at sales. But this isn't sales, it's just sharing products that you _love_ ." But then you get in and realize that no matter where on the pyramid you are, you're always selling something: Either a product, or a dream.

Yes, so true everything you talked about. I have never joined a mlm, thank goodness. I was approached by an Arbonne rep when I was in my twenties and I am glad I never fell for it. She kept on pushing sales and recruiting and since I am an introvert at heart, those things turned me off. Glad that worked out for me, lol. MLM'S should be outlawed- they are a drain on society and only bring well meaning people down

This sounds like the same form of bait and switching that happens in abusive relationships: they first show you someone respectable and then take off the mask once they feel that they have you. They try to override your ability to think for yourself and your intuition, using gaslighting among many other tactics. Then they tell you that YOU are crazy for saying that they have changed/misrepresented themselves and call you every name in the book and run a smear campaign against you for deciding to walk away. It really is terrible, no matter what the situation.

Hi Hannah, YT recommended me one of your Horror Stories videos a month ago and I got hooked. I like your very logical, well-built but at the same time very compassionate take on the subject matter. Your inner teacher really shines through. :) I'm a member of a large social media group dedicated to sharing fishy/unfair job postings and bad interview experiences and MLM ads are starting to pop up in increasing numbers. One of these was almost a word-for-word translation of one of the texts you've analysed in one of your videos when talking about generic patterns/tactics in MLM recruiting messages. I can't remember for the life of me which one it was :( as I'm one of those who usually listen to you as if to a podcast, multiple videos at a time, and don't often look to check the title. Multiple people asked me for a link after I commented that I 'saw' a very good break-down from you the other day. I just pointed them to your anti-MLM playlist instead- I hope they'll eventually find their way here. P.S. Whenever I'm listening while at home and hear Zeke, I tend to look around because one of our cats has an almost identical voice and signals 'cat wants' with exactly the same pitch and tone! :D

I'm rewatching this. Such good info, people need to look out for this stuff, because ANYONE can be sucked into an MLM if they don't know what to look for. The rank maintenance always grinds my gears. I was a GM for a restaurant before moving out of state, and never once was my position in jeopardy because I didn't hire enough people. I could be fired for egregious acts, or if the store location closed down, but I didn't have to keep hiring more and more people just to stay in my position as GM. MLMs are not businesses, no legitimate business is run this way, because it simply isn't viable. They offer nothing to the outside world, only to use people who join.

I love anti mlm videos but I'm willing to bet the people in an mlm will click off videos if they feel the creator is being condescending. I believe a lot of them stay in bc they don't want to hear "I told you so" and they know deep down they will lose their "friends". Love bombing can be very intoxicating especially if you're in a vulnerable place

Thank you for this video. I’ve been watching you for a long time now and I recently had an old friend reach out (I was really suspicious when their name popped up on my caller id) and she tried getting me to join a call for ACN Health Insurance. My first question to her was what product or service does she offer and how is the company structured lol. IMMEDIATE red flags. I gave her a brief talk of my concerns about her situation and I sent her this video to watch. Also did research on ACN and big red flags went up when their FAQ page has FOUR topics related to the company being a pyramid scheme and scam 😂😅. If you have to defend your company against being labeled as an MLM, there’s no doubt that it is, in fact, an MLM. Hannah, thank you for being a voice we can use to help educate our friends and family to help protect their relationships and bank accounts. Keep fighting the good fight!

I absolutely love this!! The only thing I didn’t like was that your kitties didn’t make an appearance 🤣 These are soooo spot on! Especially number 1! Huns like to say things like “I’m glad I don’t have a 9-5 and have to answer to anyone” but it’s funny that when I was in an MLM 4 yrs ago, my uplines bugged me wayyyy more than my 9-5 bosses ever do! My 9-5 I just go and get my work done and turn it in as needed. In the MLM I was always asked, “will you be listening in on the call tonight? Will you be coming to the overview?” etc. Even some of my 9-5 coworkers (2 are neighbors of mine and live past me down my road) started to notice I was gone from home a lot! They know I’m a homebody so even they noticed I must’ve been up to something else back then lol so cringey some of the stuff I had to do back then. Neverrrr again!!

11:20 in Australia the YL comp plan requires you to spend 100pv monthly from the beginning if you are doing the biz to get commissions. Also you have to spend a US equivalent PV (1PV = $1 US but 1PV is about $1.6AUD) so we are paying more for their products.

Ever since getting into anti MLM content I’ve just been spewing all the info I’ve been learning to my husband and bro lol just cuz I find it so fascinating but I’ll def show them this video in particular to let them learn as well and show their friends, none of them r in a mlm currently but who knows, it’s good to bring awareness Also once I told my husband about them, lightbulbs clicked in his head and he said one of his friends joined something and lost 10,000 😓, when he asked him the name, it was primerca or however it’s spelt so i feel like everyone has someone that they know directly or can be connected to someone who’s been affected by these horrible scams

I was love bombed years ago when I joined Avon. I was told it was a big happy family and sooo supportive yada yada. I was encouraged to go to the monthly team meetings, this was well before covid. So I turned up to one, having to catch 3 buses in order to get there. It was just a bunch of people congratulating each other on how good they were at selling stuff, amd me being totally ignored. It reminded me of the mean girl cliques at my high school. I learned nothing, I made no friends, and I had to slog back to the bus stop in the hot sun with all the huns happily sailing past in their airconditioned cars. I never went back, and I eventually left Avon when it became too expensive for me. You probably guessed it - I was my own best customer.

Excellent video! I just want to add on to your great point at 22:39... What you say here perfectly illustrates how a "product based" pyramid scheme works! Almost all MLM's are fundamentally no different than a "traditional" pyramid scheme. I really don't see this point made enough in Anti-MLM content! (Especially when so many MLMer's we-are-not-a-pyramid-scheme defense is "but we have a product") A few red flags that make this very obvious: 1) What you explained here about the majority of the product sales being within the MLM and not "outside" sales. Big red flag. If you just took away the product or service, and just called these end-of-month rank buying rallies an "investment"... voila! Now you have a plain ol' vanilla pyramid scheme! The actual product is just a facade. A ruse. 2) Notice how many of these MLMs are constantly expanding their product lines and getting into vastly different markets: "we aren't just shampoo! Now we also do wellness, make-up, home care, etc!" This just belabors the point that the products themselves don't matter. Some of the world's oldest and most successful companies still mostly focus on dominating one relatively narrow market very well, i.e. Coca-cola: beverages, Proctor & Gamble: Soaps and Detergents. The only reason MLMs constantly expand their product lines into new markets is to recruit more people into the pyramid and keep it going... "Oh, selling shampoo is not your thing? We have vitamins now too!" They are not interested in focusing and dominating one market, because the products themselves don't actually matter. They can be anything. 3) In a real world sales job, you as the sales representative would NEVER be expected to PAY for a product to gain product knowledge. That is ridiculous. Especially when we are talking about consumables! The cost would be so nominal for a company to create free samples to send out to all the reps. The reason they don't do this is because they don't care about you having product knowledge. It's just another "sales" opportunity to have more money funnel up the pyramid. The product is just a facade. 4) Similar to number point 3, if the product actually mattered, all these team zoom meetings would be all about product knowledge, and how to sell them. The company would be doing market research with their reps, asking things like, "what are our customers asking for", etc. But no. It's all just "personal development", motivational talks, and learning how to RECRUIT. They barely, if ever, talk about the product. That is because the product doesn't matter. Lastly, on your earlier point (8:30) about how MLM products are all overpriced and sub-par: i agree with your point they are almost always overpriced (because realistically, the price is based on how much money they want going up the pyramid! Not the actual product value.) But, I think this misses the point, because I am sure there are a lot of MLM reps who DO genuinely like and use their products, and believe them to be the best on the market. The point is, even if that is true, we can be assured based on the "business model" the company chose, that a product being fantastic is completely INCIDENTAL. If the company really felt the product was that amazing, they would make much more money selling through traditional retailers, or online direct to consumers. Im sorry, but it is foolish to think that a large company would eat into its potential profits out of the goodness its heart... wanting to give people a "wonderful opportunity", just because. They purposely choose that model, because the company THEMSELVES don't believe that they have the best products on the market. But, that's ok because: The products don't matter.

If there products are so great, for example Monat, why don't they just sell them at stores and not have to pay the uplines/downlines, fees? Because their products would never compete with other expensive name brand shampoos etc. And because of course, they make more money off recruiting.

Something i’ve been noticing is people trying to make entrepreneurship mentorship a MLM. I’ve been approached multiple times by girls at bookshops, target, trying to tell me about these “old mentors” they have that are teaching them how to retire before 20 years old, if you agree to meet up, they treat you as if it was an honor and they make you read the book network marketing by robert kiyosaki. I felt like i was in a cult lol. Luckily, i didn’t fall for it after i realized but i was pretty sad cause i thought the girls genuinely were nice and wanted to be friends but really they just wanted me to join their cult lol

A big focus with Arbone was the commissions. They made sure you knew that the commission payouts came from Arbonne. Not your own income. To make it seem like you make more. Sooooo fake and bad. 5 months of my life wasted and the money... Ohhh the money. Why I thought $42 for a grapefruit body scrub was okay I'll never know 🤣

I’ve asked this before. Please answer. WHO keeps track of all the sales, etc. and what your paychecks should be? Is there an actual employed payroll person??? And how can you trust that they will pay you the correct amount and keep track of all your download sales??

Financial dept. All sales would go through the dept. and breakdown by sales, commissions, earnings off your downline, annual enrollment fees, etc. From what I have seen on videos of former MLM reps., they kept their own meticulous records to match against the "backroom" records they access online at the comoany.

I wish my mom would watch this. She's 54 and has been in numerous MLM's and thinks one of them will retire her early even tho she has never made money from one and because of many financial mistakes, doesn't even have much savings/401K for a realistic retirement :(

It's crazy how they always preach about being their own boss and not working for someone else and making them rich but pay to get into the 'business' and for product and bearly come up with a sale to recoup....how're you your own boss but run the risk of getting demoted if you didn't perform well in a month or can get terminated 😂

It’s kind of confusing but in the case of spouses, they allow them to operate under “jointly sponsored” status meaning that they’re essentially the same person. One is not above another, one does not recruit another, they are just both contributing to the same “business” they share together. Hope that makes sense!
