Great vid, one thing that is frustrating is the trade waiting/series pre-orde cycle. If you like a series and follow it but doesn't have enough of a following, it gets cancelled. I was a 90s kid. I started collecting comics in 1989 at the age of eight. I fell hard for the speculators market. After the market crashed I made a promise to myself. I swore to never buy a variant cover again. I also promised to never buy a book just because it was popular. Recently I had to take a step back and look at my buying habits for comics. I was not getting joy from my unbroken runs anymore. This, coupled with the price, forced me to cull my pull list and embrace more creator owned books. I’m enjoying reading comics again. As long as I can say I’m primarily a reader over a collector than I know I’m doing it right.

I agree with pretty much all your points (I am a sucker for some variants, so I don't mind them), trying to get your hands on a book you want to read or because you love the art/cover and the scalpers have beaten you to it always sucks. I collect for mostly for 2 simple things 1. Almost everything I buy, I buy to read with one exception and that is 2. I buy because I love the cover, there's probably 2-3 books a week that I'll pick the A cover up then spot a variant that I just can't pass up on that I pick up as well... In saying that I usually only collect variants of the titles I'm collecting, there has been the odd cover or two where I'll pick it up strictly for the variant with no intention of reading it (i.e. Batgirl 24 variant by Josh Middleton)

I ran a store from 1993 to 2009, and back in the nineties Marvel offered lower priced versions of their regular titles, only with newsprint pages and a lighter cover stock than the more expensive versions. Guess what? Nobody bought them. Try to find a copy of ASM #400 without the gaudy, die-cut "Aunt May's grave" cover that was twice as expensive as the non-enhanced version. The problem then was that people wanted the more costly versions, and comics got away from producing the cheapest possible versions of their books. New printing techniques and computer-aided design were also kicking in around that time and they required a better paper stock and production values than what had been the industry standard for decades. I'm not a fan of $4.00 and $5.00 comics, but comparing old prices to current prices is a bit of an "apples to oranges" deal. Paper prices have also been steadily on the rise since those days, and rising fuel and energy costs affect the whole supply chain. One last thing to keep in mind: in the past comic creators were notoriously underpaid for their efforts, which also helped keep those comics from "the good old days" artificially cheap.
@MintHunterComics3 жыл бұрын
I see, and thanks for lending your expertise! You make some great points and those prices are a reflection of a lot of reasons other than cash grab. I'm sure you have lots of amazing stories!

This’ll tell you what kind of “collector” I am. The thought of spending more than $5 on a comic is nearly inconceivable to me, lol! Consequently my collection ain’t worth squat. $1 boxes are pretty much strictly my comfort zone. Based off your part about the cost of modern comics and inflation, I mean I have to imagine it's not as simple as this is what it was then, add inflation and what it should be now. Comics are not worth the price they charge in terms of art or story. There's so many different comics being released at the same time that it's quantity over quality. Shonen Jump had this figured out and they have a certain number of titles in their magazine at a time every week. They also have a ranking system that leads to quality control. If your series doesn't stay in the top ten for ten consecutive weeks, it gets axed. That makes writers and artists work three times as hard to stay in the game. We get epic battles and epic stories as a result.

When I got there they said "sure show us what you got and then offered 30% to 50% of what actual value was. Recently I tried to comeback to comics. In fact I manage to complete Transformers 84: Secrets and Lies. I'm kind of an old school guy meaning I walk in on stores. I remember trying to get Street Fighter # 100 from a shop but told I can't buy it up front because people ordered. I was pretty bummed out. And if you're going to say a) Why not buy it off E-Bay or something and b) Why not go digital? Well shipping it to my country is way too expensive than the actual book and I would like to own a physical copy. Sure I can read it online but nothing beats a hard copy - at least for me. Then I tried to hook up with TMNT The Last Ronin. I went for a different shop and they said they are in stock in fact they have copies ready - only problem it's again it's only for those who ordered costumers. The sad fact is that a bunch of them haven't picked up by their "valued" costumers. It really bummed me out even more. Books that are not my thing are on the shelves while other books aren't available walk in folks. 😢 Look I may sound wrong at this and I'm not always online to know the latest release so please let me have this. This is really giving me a hard time to come back as if it prevents me in comic collecting and added that to the closure of my actual shop that I buy my comics from. Comics are printed on high grade gloss paper in full color but are short issues that are half ads, half comic. That and since they are name brands like Marvel and DC, they charge out the wazoo even in compilations in volumes be they paperback or hardcover, some charging up to 80 bucks! Fricking insane! Add that to all the weird crap they keep doing to everyone's favorite characters that do nothing for story and turn older fans off and it's no wonder why manga is kicking their asses. Manga is printed on regular paper in black and white and is super cheap for both digital and physical releases. On top of that, multiple issues are released in a single volume and each volume comes out roughly every month and go for 10 bucks on average. The stories are better planned out and the choreography for the fights and battles are fantastically drawn. The characters are super expressive and the stories are dramatic and treat characters fairly without doing anything drastic to ruin it.

Shonen Jump series are way easier to find than specific Marvel or DC comics, and you can often order them if they don't have specific volumes. Comics end up going out of print and shooting up in value and price. Why pay so much for crap when you can pay less for a better, more complete story with better art?

#WheresMyCarrot! I would love a Captain Carrot book! You really nailed it on some of these points (I say some because some don't apply to my experiences) especially the idea that people should just enjoy the books coming out and let everyone collect what and how they want. There should be no shame about collecting the wrong way or anything else.
@MintHunterComics3 жыл бұрын
I think if everyone just let everyone have fun and stop blaming them for how they collect we'll all be one beautiful happy family!

Agreed on most points. On a good (and bad) note, I think we are due for a bit of a bubble burst soon, so a lot of those prices should fall to reasonable levels within a year or two. There are too many people buying right now that have no real love of the actual books… and that will eventually become evident when the market stats to soften. There are a couple of minor keys that I never got around to getting (Marvel Spotlight 5, Ghost Rider 1, etc), so I am going to have to wait this out until the crash happens. I have no real love for Cpt Carrot, but good luck to you… although I figure that was more to get an idea how many people made it to the end of the video.

Fear of missing out is at least a thing that i can't relate to because the only new comics that i buy is the phantom, all the other comics that i buy are old because i prefer the older drawing style in a lot of comics.

I won't pay $4 plus for brand new comics, I'll hit the bargain bins and buy a bunch of great reads at $1 each.

I'd also add accessibility to that list. I used to be able to get comic books (not DM) at gas stations, grocery stores, and local bookstores. Can't any more, and there's not really any local bookstores either. There's specialized comic shops but not really convenient to drive to and expensive. Not really a collector but do like reading them.

I think it's important to note that the comic market is changing. Comics used to just be for the nerds. Now people are being introduced to these characters through tv shows and movie in ways that were never thought possible until now. So we have tons of new collectors entering the scene. Some of them wanting more to read on these characters they have fallen in love with while others just want cool covers to put up on the wall. Scalpers have always been around. although before we may have called them hustlers. They had to put in the work and have the knowledge to really make it work out. Now anyone can open up the key collector app and know what to look for. I work in a comic shop and have watched how people that only collected funko pops or action figures have started getting into comics. It just takes one really cool looking book to get someone in and hooked.

I go into comics like 2 months ago. I’ve read maybe 2 of my 50+ books I’ve bought . I collect for the art not the story, and if that’s a bad thing then I guess I’m a shitty comic collector . Before comics it was yugioh cards again I collected those for the art not to play the game . And when there are 10 different variants , some with holo or chromium or foil , it makes buying for the art that much more worth it .

Nearly 25 years into my second collecting career. I freed myself from the concerns of modern book buying. I really only have one book,ASM 14, that I want to get back. After that, I’m on IG looking to swap multiple graded books for one that I don’t have and condense my collection to a about one hundred graded super keys.

I'm cutting down on collecting graphic novels after I get the last 2 graphic novels on wish list. On the further note they are not longer lasting compared to hardcovers and I don't really wanna carry on buying graphic novels at the age 25, let bygone's be bygones.

First, to get the best experience from comic collecting collect what you like and do not listen to anyone else. Second, to have the best ROI depends on your knowledge and how much time you spend on collecting comics. The more knowledge and time invested on comic collecting, the better the ROI. Third, be a Stand-Up guy. Do the right thing when buying and selling comics.

10: Yes. Oh FUCK yes!!!! And which variant is which? Which is 1:10 variant, and which is 1 per 10 incentive variant? And why SO MANY "ONE PER STORE" variants? And so many different incentive variants? And store exclusive variants? And "variants for the sake of variants" variants, Baby variants, Animal variants, On Sale Wednesday variants, Party variants.... AAAAAARRGH!!! 9: Again, yes. 8: Fortunately, I have never faced this. 7: Never suffered from this, thank blob. 6: PREACH IT, BROTHER!! 5: Agreed. 4: Unfortunate reality for those of us whose favourite character doesn't always sell continuously (e.g. Ghost Rider) - they stop the run, then years later try again. Agreed, though, for larger titles such as Avengers, Justice League, et al. 3: But if you're not reading them, WHY? 2: Scalpers for variants!!! 1: That's how I feel about Ghost Rider.

#5 is why this week's comics are my last. $4 to $5 per comic (which takes 10 to 15 minutes to read) just isn't worth it. I really, REALLY wish the 100 page giant series DC was doing for Wal-Mart had taken off like a rocket. They were, in my opinion, the future of comics had they marketed them right. There is no reason for readers to keep shelling out $4.99 for 24 pages when DC showed it could be done at the same price for 100 pages.

The Flippers wiping out online retailers in minutes after release just to go make Pre-Sales listings on Ebay for 3 and 4 times what they paid... Grrrrr! Gleason offered Virgin covers of the ASM 55 you showed on his website but if you didnt hit buy in the first 3 or 4 minutes, sorry too slow but you can get it on Ebay for a premium. Wheres my carrot, well if I could it would be up some flipper's yea... keeping it PG. Great list, I agree with you in so many ways.
