I can answer the Discord-Nightmare Moon confusion. Nightmare Moon's design and story was the same, it was simply that her name would be Discord being the opposite to the theme of the openibg two parter (Elements of Harmony). The reason her name was changed was down to the fact that the staff believed that kids wouldn't understand what discord meant. When it came around to season two and naming the actual Discord, they decided that it was such a fitting name for the character they had created, that they decided to just go with it. What they did ensure in the first episode of Discord was the definition of the word through the dialogue of the CMC (sort of) in the prologue to the episode.

Luna's original name was discord because it is "Discord" as in "Discard" as in princess Celestia discarded Luna and sent her to the moon for 1000 moons OR princess Celesta discarding Luna by keeping her as "extra princess:

Derpy's appearance was a computer bug, and was suppose to be a bigger main character. Unable to fix the bug, the canned her, but some images had already released of derpy to get her a fanbase and official aire time.

I have a mlp book, and it said that nightmare moon's name was originally going to be discord, but the scrapped the idea, thinking kids weren't going to know what it meant.

The one fact that I always like was that Rainbow Dash was supposed to be named Firefly. After the G1 Pegasi pony in the first MLP episode. But, there were copyright problems and the name had to be changed.

in one of the books I have that actually has a q&a with lauren faust, they originally wanted NMM to be called discord, (and don't quote me on this, but I think it was this version of the first episodes that Zecora was going to first show up and give a little bit of information. that or it was just going to be more about NMM) the reason it was changed was they didn't think kids would know what discord meant and how it was the opposite of harmony, and they didn't have the time to explain it, so they changed the name. that's also the reason why return of harmony pt 1 has cheerilee explain at the start.

Maybe Nightmarr Moon was Originally gonna be a sepret being? Or a being that originally existed but needed to control someone or a host? Maybe somthing close or similar species of the Changlings? Like Nightmare moon and the batponys?
