My most hated trope in cartoons and anime is the "child of the former protagonist looks exactly like a tiny clone of them" trope

I think JJBA did a great job of this with giorno and dio, and jotaro and jolyne as well. …I’m going to ignore Joseph and Jorge II. (Although I guess giorno and Dio don’t count in this scenario since Dio wasn’t a protag..)

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Prime example. One of the kids looks *exactly* like their dad, except has the mother's eyes. That's it. Literally. And a lot of the other kids are practically carbon copies of their parents. One of several reason why I've completely refused to watch said series, despite otherwise enjoying Naruto/Naruto Shippuden.
@AquarianFrostAngel91

It's normal for kids to resemble their parents, even if it's sometimes a carbon copy. I look at pics of my mom when she was young and compare them to mine and I'm a carbon copy of her, save for a few features since I take those from my dad. I like it when the offspring resembles their parents, other than having the same hair color (or lighter/darker shade than the parent's hair) when I watch anime and cartoons.

Well this trope isn’t that bad imo, bc it’s completely normal for a child to b a spitting image of their parent. But I think I get it. The child won’t have any unique physical characteristics or a unique design if they’re just drawn as the protags mini clone. The child only gets their unique design if they have physical traits from both the protagonist and the protagonists significant other.

I believe the “cheek mouth” look was initially made for animated shows to have an easier time animating mouths, aka not having to worry about the negative space, the proper angle/perspective of the mouth and its features, etc. No idea why it made it into manga too because it’s was only meant to help cut back on animation time, but who knows! In defense of the ''cheek mouth'', I think its most infamous look is when it's used on more detailed art styles because having a side mouth with detailed lips only to feature a big mouth on the cheek makes it that more noticeable, cartoonier art styles can get away with it easier because of having a simplified face, even Western cartoons get away with it. (And that being said, just like any stylization, it definitely requires an actual study and understanding on facial anatomy to make sure it looks fine)

Big hands are considered a masculine trait but the reason why Yaoi hands were so big is simply that during the Yaoi/bl boom around 2000-2010, a lot of artists (most probably new) hopped on the genre for an easy start, cash grab, for fun, etc. but the problem was a lot of those artists were really not good with anatomy. This paired with the sudden increase in competition on the market made artists copy the "Yaoi formula" that was popular, which in turn pushed this type of style to its limits and way beyond it. Gladly people have left that behind and prefer to work on their own stylistic art.

A trope that I hate is when camera angles insist on depicting a random boob or butt shot into a scene, especially when it has absolutely NOTHING to do with what’s happening in the scene itself. There’s this weirdly specific but common scene where a heroine will be groveling on the ground after just gotten beaten up by an antagonist, and the camera insists on having her ass fill have the screen while the antagonist is giving a monologue. Cut to the heroine’s face while she’s giving her response, and her boobs will be hanging low to give the audience tons of cleavage. It always makes me roll my eyes and emotionally check out during what should be an intense scene. Strangely, this does have two upsides. One: it makes it easier to spot (or at least predict) when a woman or feminist man has written/directed something, because there will be a distinct lack of these random shots (or at least very few of them). Two: it makes playing Project Diva really funny when you have either Kaito or Len in the place of one of the girls in a dance. Nothing about the choreography or camera angles change, so it’s the perfect way to demonstrate what the male gaze is for someone who doesn’t understand.

I actually decided to look up chest sizes for characters in anime I liked, and found that the only character from an anime/anime game I like that has a larger chest than me is Ogami Sakura… and my aunt told me that when I’m older, that probably won’t be true anymore! The thing is, though, I’ve always had a large chest - like, I think it was like 120cm when I was 10? Something like that - and literally all characters I’ve seen in media with a chest anywhere near my size is so, extremely sexualised. As a lesbian myself, (who’s afab) having big boobs sucks, and while it’s fine to have characters with big boobs, women (cis/genderqueer) tend to be able to tell whether or not the shit is fanservice or not, and it tends to just make it harder to relate to fem characters in general which sucks (in my experience with shounen and fem characters.)

One of my hated tropes is the animes where it's supposed to be ugly duckling to beautiful swan but it's really just someone loosing weight and/or taking off their glasses. Give them some pimples, have them do terrible makeup, have their hair look gross, but do MORE then just repeat society's idea that fat and beautiful are mutually exclusive.

It can be both. (Sorry this can be a very long commentary) Not to mention there are many cases of us asians as baby face (probably not only asians, i've seen others who happens to have the same thing... but since we are talking about anime and it is made in japan we need to put it on their perspective.) , especially on women. This one is actually a fact and it has been common all the time. Im not so sure why but maybe its all of that skin routine or so..or genetics.... There are people who ages very differently despite growing up normally and some are actually comes down in a real life syndrome/genetic disease but i think thats reaching too far.... Case in point, baby face/young face of an adult is a real thing. I was a victim of someone misinterpreted my age due to how i physically appear and have to show an ID just to confirm i am in the age of an adult way beyond of what the person has thought... (Its actually quite annoying.) Though there is something i also learned from other women, that once a woman hits menopause, thats usually where all signs of aging would come like say 50+ in some. So depicting an age of 29-35 and expecting a female character to have wrinkle may not be as accurate as well since.. 35 is still considered young.. even 40 sometimes from the perspective of other folks. Not only that, same face syndrome actually do have perks and pros. It creates identity for the artist and in some point it is easier to do animation. It doesnt mean they cannot explore but it is a type of mastery they mastered... especially if it is a recognizable stylized character.

I can explain the "double ear" trope. Maybe around 6 months ago I saw a post about how one artist does that so I ended up using this method for some of my OCs. The concept is basically making human ears for hearing, while the animal part is dysfunctional. I also added the idea of being able to feel & sometimes move the animal ears, but, of course, it's optional.

So animal ears ARE vestigial appendages in this case. Still weird, but ok.
@destinpatterson1644

The reason for the double ear is because drawings of animal girls with short hair, that don't have the human ears, are genuinely kinda horrifying to look at. Which is not what you want for your supposed to be cute character. So to avoid this uncanny valley, the artist either has to give them long enough hair and put them in a pose in which the human ears would be covered, which would be quite limiting, or give them human ears to not set off our fight or flight.

I think I have an idea about the "yaoi hands." As someone who's been reading the genre for a while now, I personally do find "many" or well detailed hands visually attractive and with some level of sexual appeal. It's something that I've noticed I put more detail into my own art especially for my male characters. While I do not find the large oversized hands attractive to the degree it's been seen in BL/Yaoi manga I can understand it to some level of being a fetish kind of like feet. In my opinion though, I feel like it is a mix of being a fetish common in the genre mixed with low budget and short deadlines leaving little to no time to go back and fix anatomy errors. Many of the examples you showed in your video are kind of memes in the BL/Yaoi community for having weird and unusual anatomy. I hope this sheds a bit of light on the subject.

Like when le ML can grab the entire waist of his love interest with one hand or hold his head or... well use his long fingers .......not gonna go further on this one...... Considering that male attribute is also shown way bigger in those media we can clearly assume that whatever is considered attractive is shown way bigger than real anatomy really is. "I am going to do more of this, I don't care if you like it or not, I am having fun". An artist doing what she likes. Yes, I support this! Btw I am not familiar with yaoi manga but by seeing such big hands on the characters you showed, I think they are actually very beautiful (Mmh... Should I start reading them?). I think hands, if well-drawn, are beautiful, so the bigger they are, the better you can observe them, and the larger beautiful area they occupy on the page. But it's just my guess, I don't know if hands of that size have a meaning in the story, or if the yaoi community has some sort of hand k1nk. About the cheek mouth, I find it aesthetically unpleasant, but I understand where it comes from: by seeing the open mouth from the side, you can see the other corner of the mouth on the further side of the face, which can be simplified by drawin it very close to the profile edge, which can be further be simplified into uniting the lips on the front, which can be exaggerated by drawing closed lips and the mouth opening further from them along the cheek.

Like I get that they want the audience to be able to easily identify that these are the main character's children but come on, they can look a little different and act a different. But nope. The daughter looks just like the father but with long hair and acts like him as well while the son looks just like mom but with short hair and also acts just like her. As for the tropes I dislike, the unequal fanservice is one, for every awkwardly large pan over an up skirt I want the same over a guy’s biceps or chest! My most “hated” trope, is tall swole guy gets genderbent into a smol, not swole woman….WHAT!? NO! GIMME MY TALL SWOLE LADIES!! And my actual most hatred trope, fantasy races where the males are like these monstrous, grotesque, hard to look at, the females of the race are just human women with different colored skin, maybe horns, and pointed ears…….NO! I’m ACTUALLY UPSET AT THAT ONE

i agree so hard with those two hated trope. the amount of tall swole men genderbends that make them small and skinny women are so infuriating, why tf would all their muscle and height suddenly disappear??? and the female vs male fantasy race thing is *SOOO* true! the men would get varied looks but the females are always human-looking with additional appendages based off of what their fantasy race is.

It's kind of why I make near demi-humans regardless of gender, and the two ideas closest to anthro designs are both on female/femme characters (one is a "what if" form for a demi-human and the other I have in mind is a monstrous fish being who's mental capacity is more comparable to a dog).

My least favorite trope is all the damn FANSERVICE. I was banned from watching Soul Eater a few years ago cuz my parental figure walked in on a fanservice scene. It’s not even appealing tbh, but that might just be because I’m asexual. Who knows honestly!!

Though luck then, cause japanese people live from fanservice (be it male or female fansevice).

I just realized something about TDLOSK- they kind of make references to the “brown hair protagonist” character when they introduced Satou as the only normal kid. Saiki basically treats him like how communities treat the basic brown haired boys, and it’s even funnier when you remember that Satiu basically has the personality of every brown haired boy protagonist at the beginning of animes.

I will be honest and say that I actually like the xxxxx yr old goddess child thing. In theory it’s an interesting concept but it’s what people decide to do with it. Yes adults can look young but not 10. And because she’s xxxxx yrs old and wise and smart doesn’t mean she’s emotionally an adult that can have romantic relationships. AT LEAST FROM WHAT I HEAR ONLINE An example of a good old loli who is still a child IMO Is Qiqi and Klee from genshin. I’m pretty sure klee is older than even Jean yet Jean is still like a mother figure because klee is emotionally young as well as physically young even if she’s numerically older than Jean.

My least favorite trope in general is a GIGANTIC NOGGIN. Just a GIANT DOME. A MONUMENTAL MELON. A head that defies ALL laws of gravity, that is so absurdly large compared to the obsessively dainty and thin frame of the character. It’s actually painful for me to look at, it’s so absurdly ugly. Like, maybe a little exaggeration I could accept, but sometimes it’s taken too far and nobody ever talks about it; I think this actually bothers me more than the monster water balloon badonkers. I think the 3D animation Disney movies are the biggest perpetrators of this, but I’ve seen it done in anime too. It’s just so fuckin hard to look at, pardon my French

Catgirl's human ears looks mostly like artist's confusion - ear placement is bound with head shape and inner structure. Most of artists - when they draw only animal ears - hide head sides with long or fluffy hair making their job easier (e.g. Raphtalia). I actually think that two pair of ears could be interesting, but I would choose two pair of animal ears on the sides rather than animal pair on the top and human on the sides. I would make both pair working, maybe one better for higher or lower sounds than the second pair. Guess I should get back to drawing... 😅

The cheek lip can be ridiculous in some styles, but in others, like Sonic and some western animation, it works well as a stylisation, I very rarely put my characters mouths smack dab in the middle of the face when I’m drawing, they’re always a little to one side or the other, but that’s because I have a very cartoony style, so it works alright, but when you’re drawing in a more ‘realistic’ style, like anime, it just takes away from the immersion, even more than ballon boobs sometimes

the side mouth was originally created when animations had to be produced fast and animators didn’t have the time nor energy to redraw the entire jaw whenever a character opens their mouth so they js drew the generic side profile silhouette and slapped a mouth on it

Nipples on men often don't exist. Idk why this bothers me. It just always has. Hair that obviously would need a whole can of hair gel and its own internal skeletal structure to be able to retain it's shape consistently and then when undone their hair is automatically soft and supple. I don't mind the tight clothes painted on muscle when it's knit fabrics (I stare at my hubby in his t-shirt for this reason), but when it is a blazer or something that should be tailored, I get eye twitch. I unfortunately (because I was so jelly of them) have seen many natural gravity defying watermelon boob tiny waisted born that way women in my life. That being said, half of them did get size reduction surgery because it was literally crushing their spines. The other half worked in adult stuff... It's not so much the tiny waist and size I envied was that they defied gravity so much I would assume they had their own orbit.

Differentiating character's ages is honestly really hard to do. Especially if they range from teens to early 20s. But even irl, someone can look younger/older than they actually are due to height. I tried adjusting for this with one of my short co-workers, but she actually ended up being 3 years younger than me. Also, the Cheek-Mouth and Skin-Fang actively piss me of when I see them.

My most hated trope is the femboy/trap like those characters who look exactly like flat chested little girls, act exactly like them, are voiced by women/have extremely female sounding voices but they are male and "bi curious" straight men go crazy for them as a fetish. I love feminine make characters Don't get me wrong I'm a massive tomgirl myself and I do drag but this specific character is everywhere and I hate it so much
