Anecdotally heard that crime comes in cycles in Honolulu. We’re supposed in the cycle of when crime is worse. Lots of violent crime lately - public domestic abuse cases (shooting, throwing acid, etc). Lately there’s been waves of fentanyl-related events too. Really sad to hear.

Eugene resident here. It was a decent place when I moved here in 2018. In 2020 it really went down the drain though. Homelessness, drugs, crime, and a rising cost of living ruined it. I drove around town yesterday, saw tents and garbage everywhere, and thought "this city looks like shit right now" 🤦

I'm from Stockton. I had to look up the Kennedy neighborhood. It's the area that I would have called Sierra Vista. Maybe they changed the name. It was the ghetto. I went to college at SDSU and ended up working and retiring in the Silicon Valley. I've been back to Stockton to visit friends once in a while. My parents stayed in their home. Stockton was a divided city politically and economically.

Live here too and love it! Love the nature. Mt. Charleston on the weekends in the summer to cool off. Having come from Florida where the heat truly is year-round, there was no such luxury to escape the heat like there is here. Seems like everything I need and want is in arms reach. Only complaint is the crime that requires more vigilance than where I live before, but I don’t think it outweighs the benefits when you learn to be more vigilant

I moved to Vegas from the east coast and really like it. In Florida and NY where I lived, everyone talked about how they did not like it. In Vegas, everyone I know talks about how amazing it is. It’s very underrated- lots of outdoors like Colorado without the crowds. The weather is great 50s, 60s, and 70s year round October - April. It is hot June-August, but dry heat and much better than Florida. Of course it matters which part of town you live in. Because the strip distracts everyone away from all the nature, it is one of the few places you can still get 5-star views without crowds. You have almost everything you want within a 5 minute drive. Great dining. No traffic like other places. The city is growing faster than you can think, so will be interesting to see how the stats change!

Regardless of any other problems, Vegas is *not* running out of water anytime soon. It's actually one of the most water-efficient cities in the US, and does not even use all of its' minuscule allotment of 1.8% of water from the Colorado River (most of which goes to SoCal and Arizona). Las Vegas has a water intake below the deadpool level at Lake Mead - i.e., if the water dropped so low it stopped flowing over the Hoover Dam, Vegas would still get water. SoCal residents and farmers lose water (and power) before Vegas does.

Portland, Oregon should be high on this list. Wow Briggs, I'm impressed. You actually acknowledge other cities than Seattle exist in Washington State. All you usually do is mention Seattle. Good job. Tacoma has good and bad parts. The North End of Tacoma is beautiful. Nice waterfront. The Hilltop area and Lakewood sucks. Spokane has good and bad areas as well. My uncle has a beautiful home with The Spokane River running right off his back porch. Boating and fishing in the summer. Not too bad. Browne's Addition and some of the areas around downtown Spokane are not good. That said I have never felt particularly unsafe in Downtown Spokane at night. Yes, there are homeless. But it's nothing compared to my old home town of Portland. Now that is a shithole.

Briggs the reason why home prices are still rising in these cities is the housing shortage! What’s causing the housing shortage is people that have homes with interest rates 4 percent or below are not selling their homes even if they relocate with their job they’re just renting them out cause interest rates are too high! That’s what is causing the housing shortage!

My aunt moved to Honolulu back in the late 70's. She always held down a job & managed to support herself until the mid 2000's. Her last job was working as a live-in caregiver for an elderly man for about 10+ years. When he passed away, his son saw how much home prices were skyrocketing so instead of renting out the house (& allowing my aunt to stay in her rented room as she was promised by his dad), he kicked her out & sold the place for a ridiculous amount. He didn't give her any sort of severance pay, bonus, or just a small monetary gift to say thanks for taking care of his dad (which he refused to do himself). So at the age of 65, she ended up homeless. We tried to intervene by sending her money & have her move into my parents' place in Monterey, CA but she refused to leave "her home". She cut all contact, lasted about 5 years longer, & died after being physically assaulted by another homeless person in January 2018. The police suspected that it was a robbery & she put up a fight to defend the few possessions she carried around in a suitcase. We didn't find out until months later, after she had already been cremated... It still upsets me to know that she lived there her entire adult life, worked, paid taxes, & ended up dying on the streets instead of in her own house or even a rented apartment.

I am a fan of your videos and I don't recall listening to one that ever had anything nice to say about St. Louis and East St. Louis. It is true that the areas have their problems, but I don't think that they are any worse than the cities that comprise your good lists. The St. Louis area has many wonderful parks, sporting events and restaurants to enjoy, and St. Louis has it's share of safe and trendy neighborhoods. East St. Louis has a great High School and a metro bus station that employs many people. There is a restaurant there that always has a line of cars around it waiting to place orders. Homes are affordable here. With a little talent and hard work, you can have a really nice and well built home in a good neighborhood. I lived in the DC area for 20 years, and the best I could do was a condo. In closing, I agree that St. Louis and the Metro East have their issues, but neither deserve to be "bulldozed". If you exercise some prudence (like you would in any other city), there is no reason that anyone can't spend an enjoyable long weekend in the St. Louis area.

The worst neighborhood in Spokane is Hillyard. It’s the northeast corner - where the developed area stops. While many hoods are gentrifying, this area never will. Tacoma was known in Western Washington as Tacompton, when I was a teenager. But you mentioned that Compton is improving, so that might be changing. The worst neighborhood there was Hilltop. Northeast Tacoma, which is kind of not integrated with the rest of the city, isn’t (or wasn’t) as bad as the rest of it.

I feel bad about Eugene Orygun. My wife and I lived there 40 years ago and it wasn't a bad place to be. We considered in years past that this might be a good place to retire, but the changes in the whole sense of place in the Eugene/Springfield area steered us away from that dream. SPOKANE, on the other hand (at least the central city area), is a place that I would have never considered living in my entire life growing up and living in the PAC NW. Even back in my early years and teens, it felt a bit dirty, grimy, and sketchy. In 1995, I was at a training session hosted at a hotel on the south side of the site of the 1974 World's Fair (Expo 74) and was SCOLDED by the hotel staff for exposing myself to danger by going on a solo evening stroll along the hiking paths that wander through the riverside park that the old Expo site had become....told me all I need to know about downtown Spokane...

Eugene is beautiful (primarily lived here since the 70's). Just like Pdx (if you go to old town, yeah it's going to suck) there are a few crappy areas, but overall it's a safe city with access to the beach or the mountain hiking in an hour's drive. Lived in Pdx, too, back in the 90's/2000's (about a decade). Eugene has done a lot in dealing with homeless, you ought to have visited during the pandemic - it's in far better shape now.

Stockton is horrible (I grew up close by) because it is a failed social experiment. They took lower income people and put them in middle income neighborhoods to show they could raise the quality of life of those from the lower income demographic but the opposite happened. They brought down the neighborhood. That's why you don't have nice area and poor areas, instead you have nice streets and poor streets right next to each other. As real estate broker, I rarely take listings in Stockton because the comps are very difficult due to how overlapping the areas are.

She wants to do more than just fill vacancies, she wants to raise the standards. I’ve lived near a couple of the places. With respect to heat in San Bernardino, imagine adding at least 5-10 degrees from the temperature in Los Angeles. And yes, the smog is bad, although probably not as bad as it was in the 80’s and 90’s when “red flag” warnings were more common. A couple areas I would recommend avoiding in that area are Muscoy and Colton . For the Tacoma area and city itself, it’s not all bad, it has a lot of gems like Point Defiiance Park with Owen Beach, Point Ruston, and some good entertainment options like the Grand Cinema and Museum of Glass, and pretty wide variety of food options. There are some nicer areas (and yes, more expensive) like the Proctor District, DuPont, Steilacoom, and University Place, but I recommend to definitely stay away from Lakewood, WA.

I've lived in and around Spokane since 2001. It has been shocking to see the lack of regard for some of these beautiful and historic old neighborhoods that the city holds. The homeless crisis I have seen here is worse than what I ever saw in Portland Oregon simply due to a lack of facilities or amenities for these people to access. The suburbs and small towns around the area are wonderful and for the most part the violent crime is concentrated in the concentrated in the East central, West Central and areas around downtown which statistically are where the homeless population tend to congregate. The north side of town is still relatively town is still benign and middle-class and there are lots of and there are lots of great walkable neighborhoods as you get farther up into the South Hill for farther north in the areas around Colbert. Spokane Valley has a lot of wonderful areas and still a very family-centric vibe as does our Northern more rural areas such as Deer Park. There has been a dedicated effort to assist the local law enforcement in helping the crime rate particularly in the downtown area and to bring more arts and culture activities back to downtown in the aftermath of covid. Thank you for having such a wonderful Channel and for highlighting both the benefits and the drawbacks of so many of our lesser known cities!

Probably the tweakers are our biggest issue. That is causing most of our crime which is primarily car break ins, home break ins. Petty theft. We do get a lot of homeless shipped to us from Portland and Seattle which does not help. We do have drug dealing activity that causes most of the murder rates. Again the tweakers and druggies. Love the historic buildings here, schools and libraries are well kept and supported by tax payers, medical services are top notch. Downtown has seen a ton of money invested into it. They do need to fix the homeless issue around the downtown library. Park system is wondeful as well as trail and hiking opportunities. Grew up fishing, hiking, camping around here. Tons of options. Lots of new business construction and sports and entertainment venues. We even have a symphony. Classic art deco theaters in beautiful condition.
