Chandra ablaze would actually be really good in a hellbent deck… the hellbent mechanic gives some benefit to the player if you have 1 or fewer cards in hand. Plus, the discard a card effect is an effect, not a cost. Meaning if you already have no cards in hand, you can get +1 loyalty without needing to discard a card. If you do happen to have a red card (which is the main color for the hellbent mechanic) that you can discard, it gives them burn damage in addition to triggering mechanics like madness (cast it for an alternate cost when you discard it) or flashback (cast it for an alternate cost from the graveyard) both of which are commonly red… on top of that, if you aren’t fishing for the “ultimate” you can use chandra’s minus ability once or twice to draw 3 cards or wheel your opponents’ hands. In general that version of Chandra is pretty bad, but it enables a number of other mechanics that can take advantage of the downside of her +1…

No it would not, if you want to empty your hand you do not want to play 6 mana cards. Chandra Ablaze is very expensive card and payoff is not there. Chandra, Torch of Defiance already gives you 4 mana removal at 4 mana and better utility. Chandra, Awakened Inferno has can't be countered, which is very important for such expensive cards as otherwise you risk taking massive tempo loss. It also gives emblems to opponent which gives inevitability against control deck and works as both sweeper and single target removal. Chandra Ablaze's 2nd ability you get much cheaper from Anje's Ravager.

One such mechanic being Madness, and unless I am mistaken, Cycling would be another, as the discard is part of the EFFECT of the +1, and can thus be redirected into the cost of the cycling. It works great with Bloodrush and Channel for the exact same reason as well.
@anthonycannet1305
@anthonycannet1305 Жыл бұрын
@@darianleyer5777 No, madness is a 2-part ability with one part being a trigger: "When this is discarded" meaning you need something else to discard it and whatever that might be will trigger the alternate casting cost for madness. Cycling, Channel, and Bloodrush are all Activated abilities with the cast being that you discard it. If you are forced to discard it by some other effect, you haven't paid the cost of discarding it. You can discard it as a cost in response to an effect that makes you discard a card, but you'd still need to discard a card after your activated ability resolves. For example, if an effect is on the stack that would make you discard a card and the only card in your hand has cycling, you can respond by discarding the cycling card and drawing another card but then the discard effect resolves and you are still required to discard the new card. If the card had madness instead of cycling, you allow the discard effect to resolve, you discard the card with madness, then it triggers the madness ability to be exiled and allow you to cast it for it's alternate casting cost. The key difference is that anything before the colon is the cost, and in cycling, channel, or bloodrush it says "discard this card" before the colon, meaning you have to discard it as part of it's cost, but madness just says "when this is discarded", which is structured as a triggered ability, "this gets exiled instead of going to grave and you may choose to cast it for it's madness cost, otherwise it goes to the graveyard"

@anthonycannet1305
@anthonycannet1305 Жыл бұрын
@@darianleyer5777 702.35 Madness rules which is where I got my information from regarding the specifics of madness 702.29 Cycling, particularly 702.29.a *Cycling is an activated ability that functions only while the card with cycling is in a player’s hand. “Cycling [cost]” means “[Cost], Discard this card: Draw a card.”* Bloodrush is not a keyword ability, but every card is printed with this text: "Bloodrush - [cost], Discard this card: Target attacking creature gets ..." Similarly, Channel is not a keyword abilty and isn't in the comprehensive rules, but again each card with the ability word is printed as "Channel - [cost], Discard this card: ..." Notice how in the cases of Channel, Bloodrush, and Cycling, "Discard this card" is before the colon and is therefore a cost. The comprehensive rules specifically state in rule 602 Activating Activated Abilities, 602.1a "The activation cost is everything before the colon (:). An ability’s activation cost must be paid by the player who is activating it." Or maybe you're referring to whether a spell's effect counts as paying a cost, in which case no it doesn't. An Activated ability is only put on the stack if you pay the cost to activate, you can only pay the cost to activate if you have priority. 113.3b *Activated abilities have a cost and an effect. They are written as “[Cost]: [Effect.] [Activation instructions (if any).]” A player may activate such an ability whenever they have priority. Doing so puts it on the stack, where it remains until it’s countered, it resolves, or it otherwise leaves the stack. See rule 602, “Activating Activated Abilities.”* Additionally, 117.2e *Resolving spells and abilities may instruct players to make choices or take actions, or may allow players to activate mana abilities. Even if a player is doing so, no player has priority while a spell or ability is resolving. See rule 608, “Resolving Spells and Abilities.”* particularly the part where it says "No player has priority while a spell or ability is resolving". This means that If you choose to allow a spell to resolve and you must choose to discard a card, you do not have priority in order to activate Channel, Cycling, or Bloodrush. If instead you choose to use your priority BEFORE the spell begins to resolve to activate Channel, Cycling, or Bloodrush, then when the discard spell resolves you would still need to discard a card as part of that spell's resolution. Madness is a unique case, it has a static effect that states (taken straight from rule 702.35a) “If a player would discard this card, that player discards it, but exiles it instead of putting it into their graveyard” Followed by the triggered effect “When this card is exiled this way, its owner may cast it by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost. If that player doesn’t, they put this card into their graveyard.” So as teh discard spell or ability resolves and you choose to discard the madness card, it gets discarded into exile. After the resolution of the spell or ability is completed, a triggered ability is put on the stack allowing you to cast the madness spell from exile for it's madness cost. A somewhat unique case is if you discard the madness card as part of the cost for some other ability, like cycling perhaps as in the case of Ichor Slick. The payment of the cost for cycling is payed which puts the cycling effect to draw a card on the stack, however a triggered ability is put on the stack immediately after thanks to madness. So you may then pay the madness cost to cast the spell because the newer triggered ability resolves first, then you resolve the avtivated ability's effect.

Great video, but I think that Ugin's Nexus is unfairly put in this list. There are far too many cards to destroy it, KCI, Oswald Fiddlebender just to name a couple, that not only send the Nexus to the Graveyard to trigger, but also give you value. Its important to note that it is an artifact and you can recurr it way easier than an instant or sorcery. Also in commander, Extra Turn spells run rampant, so its a nice stax. All in all, Ugin's Nexus is definetely not a great mythic, but undeserving of being in this Top 10.

@@Peter_Pierre_Anderson But it didn't see play with KCI, and calling paying 5 or 6 mana for an extra turn "abuse" is silly because time warp already doesnt see play and it isn't even conditional, and grading cards based entirely off of the potential of future cards is a pointless exercize, you can design a fake broken card that synergizes with like 40% of all printed cards. Pointing out that the usual rate for removing cards from hand is 3 mana made me realize that’s the base rate for practically every normal effect in magic. Anything faster than 3 mana is generally good but the generic card for that effect is probably 3 mana. Banishing light, cultivate, cancel, divination, act on impulse, enchantress’ presence, murder, etc. I guess that’s kinda like the 1 normal summon restriction in yugioh for balancing the game, anything cheaper than 2 mana is automatically considered better than the baseline and come with other built in limitations like costing life or restricted usage (like the once per turn clause put on most yugioh cards)… The 3 mana baseline also reminds me of the 3rd level spells in dungeons and dragons. Magic was originally made as a way to pass time waiting to play dnd, which is why there are a few similarities and references even before AFR set. And in dnd, unlocking 3rd level spells are the point that a spell caster gets their main archetypal spells like revivify or fireball.
@thesun5275
@thesun5275 2 жыл бұрын
According to lore at this point both exist in the same multiverse, but the stories that DnD tells typically focuses on a single plane for that edition but they sometimes go outside that. Magic however focuses on many different ones depending on the sets, the crossovers however are just times they put light on the same world, kinda how DnD dropped a book for Ravnica at the time that Magic did their return to Ravnica thing, and also Theros. So like, yeah, they are both parallel, its just since DnD is more focused on player gameplay with supplementary material while Magic drops a lot more lore. It is still an interesting combination

It's worth noting that Ugin's Nexus is "legendary" which means if you try to put a second Ugin's Nexus onto the battlefield on your side of the board, you have to send one to the graveyard, thereby enabling itself just by having multiple copies of itself in the deck.,
@yummines
@yummines 2 жыл бұрын
Funny thing about Ugin's Nexus is that there was some potential of abuse where you could make token copies of it, and since it was a legendary the legend rule would apply and the token would be automatically sacrificed and sent to the graveyard. Which would be a very easy way to get the ability off multiple times. The problem is that Ugin's Nexus effect also affects you, and you would just skip your next turn instead. So you still have to manually destroy it regardless.

There is a way to abuse it in Commander with Mishra, Eminent One so long as you can bounce the original Nexus. Use Mishra's ability at the beginning of combat to make a 4/4 copy of it. The only difference is that it's instead called "Mishra's Warform", which gets around the legendary rule. Then bounce the original, and at the end of the turn, you're forced to sacrifice the copy, and thus you take an extra turn. I've gotten quite a few wins with my Mishra, Eminent One deck because that's my stealth infinite turns combo: Ugin's Nexus, Master Transmuter, and Mishra, Eminent One. I've snuck that by opponents because they didn't realize what I was doing until it was too late.

Love the content. I do think Ugin's Nexus maybe doesn't belong on the list though, or at least be at like 10. The nexus has seen some niche play in Constructed as a sideboard tech piece, and it also sees an okay amount of play in Commander, both for its floodgate effect since extra turn effects are more common in that format, and also because it is pretty easy to proc the effect. There are a lot of ways to both proc the effect of the Nexus and generate advantage, like with Ironworks combo decks. And although it is strictly worse than a card like Time Warp, it is worthwhile to remember that it is a colorless card so it fits into any deck, and so had to be made worse than Time Warp as a result. So while I do not think that Ugin's Nexus is good, and could probably still make it onto this list, I was surprised to see it over Reap Intellect or Empty the Pits. Still, great content. Love to see the MTG rankings!

A few things to note. It’s definitely clear you are new to MtG so here’s some constructive criticism from someone who’s been playing for nearly a decade. 1) For ANY list related to MtG you need to specify what format you’re talking about. Unlike Yu-Gi-Oh!, MtG’s different formats DRASTICALLY change what cards are good and/ or how good certain cards are. 2) Ugin’s Nexus, Chandra Ablaze, and Avacyn’s Memorial should not be on this list. For Nexus and Memorial, Artifacts are the EASIEST card type to cheat out in the game, by far. It’s ludicrous how efficient they can be. Look into “Tron” and “Affinity” decks for more details. They’re not good cards, but far more usable than you gave them credit for. As for Chandra, she’s definitely bad, but not bottom 10 bad. She’s not even the worst Chandra PW. If you’re playing her, it’s in a mono-red, burn deck. What that means is that by the time you play her, you probably don’t have a hand. The likelihood of drawing a red card that will do 4 or more damage is basically 0. Also there are a lot of red spells that can be played from the grave, so discarding it really isn’t that bad. Also her -2 is her best ability. Again, you probably won’t have a hand, so forcing your opponent to discard theirs while you get to fill back up to 3 is worth at least half of her CMC. Lastly her -7 is a game-ender. 3) Delve is one of the most busted mechanics ever made in MtG. Literally any Delve card can be busted. Look up “The Storm Scale” for more details. Now let me be clear, I love your channel and the content you make. I only leave this comment here because I want to see you improve as much as possible. It was definitely interesting seeing your views on MtG as a beginner, a bit like listening to myself from the past. I hope this message reaches you and I’m looking forward to seeing you grow as both a player and content creator. If you have any questions about specifics, I’ll try to respond ASAP.

I was going to say, as an extremely casual MTG player (so I'll admit, my concept of MTG power level is probably really off), but I actually didn't think Ugin's Nexus or Chandra Ablaze would be considered the worst mythics in MTG. Ugin's Nexus seems like a reasonable downside considering it's colorless. So something that use to be exclusive to Blue decks can be access to any color. In Runeterra, when regions (similar to colors in magic) do things that aren't the strength of their region, it usually comes with some form of tax. And I feel like the another turn being on destruction instead of instant can have it's own janky advantage. Like going for a big play, forcing your opponent to respond and tap out, only to spend a little mana to destroy your own artifact to go for another big play. As for Chandra Ablaze, I don't know the worth of a 6 mana card but she seems like a good comeback card for situations where you would have wanted the game to end already. The fact that you can go straight to her second effect to potentially go +3 and potentially hurt your opponent seems great. And while the effect to discard can be considered bad, I read it as 1 loyalty counter, convert a red card in your hand to be 0 mana deal 4. When read like that, it doesn't sound too bad.

Chandra ablaze wouldn't even make the cut in a burn deck though. The big problem with Chandra ablaze is that for 6 mana you should be getting something more than the ability to discard a nonland card to deal 4 to something. The minus ability is neat if you're out of cards in hand and of course the ultimate is fine, but you never evaluate a planeswalker for their ultimate alone unless you're trying to do some doubling season combo with it. Avacyn's memorial is really, really bad. They printed that after I stopped playing, but you can't even cheat it out with tron because it has 3 white mana in the manacost and the effect is never worth 8 mana outside of a tiny amount of corner case scenarios that I cannot think of. Especially when Avacyn herself exists and creatures are far easier to cheat out compared to an artifact costing 5WWW. Ugin's nexus I can at least see being neat in some deck that has a lot of sacrifice outlets compatible with it. It's certainly even a little interesting with cards that can destroy it as you could spend a mana on smelt or a similar card to destroy it with all your other mana available to try to set up a board in a turn that can utilize an extra turn. The card I was looking for in this list though was lich's mirror. Probably didn't know of the card, but it was in Shards of Alara and was pretty awful. 5 mana artifact that if you would lose the game instead you shuffled your hand, graveyard, and all your permanents into your deck then draw 7 cards while setting your life total to 20. The issue with that card was that it was only really amusing with the card channel, which is banned in all formats and restricted in vintage where you could pay 1 life for 1 colorless mana so with the mirror you could pay all your life, and a lot of your next 20 life to gain an obscene amount of mana to use in a turn. Problem there is it's just a cute interaction because resolving channel usually wins you the game without jumping through hoops with lich's mirror to make it broken.

A card just having delve does not make it good. Temporal Trespass sees fringe play in Commander sometimes, and that's about it, and it's a god damn extra turn spell with delve on it, and costs a pretty penny to boot. Just because there are busted cards with delve does not mean delve alone makes cards busted. I don't think One With Nothing would be made much better if it had Delve on it, for an extreme example.

This list legitimately makes me wonder how long/how much your writer has played magic, some of this is egregiously wrong and could have been fixed by quickly looking up some decklists from the period these were printed in. The game has a ton of completely unplayable mythics but Molten-Tail Masticore saw a ton of competitive play in Standard. Empty the Pits was also a fairly common sideboard card in Abzan Midrange when it was in standard. Reap Intellect saw a bit of play in Block Constructed and fringe sideboard play in Standard. Chandra Ablaze and Ugin's Nexus never saw much competitive play but Chandra was a somewhat popular tech card and both are certainly better than something like Furyborn Hellkite, Axis of Mortality, Deathpact Angel or any number of Pre-Con mythics. Tibalt iconically sucks, but has probably put up more results than most mythics overall if only as being shoved in sideboard flex slots as a meme. All of these cards have been powercrept of course and were never really played in eternal formats but your videos have precendent for placing cards highly based on their competitive history rather than current powerlevel.

True, but in general, Ugin's Nexus is rather lousy. While extra turn spells are amazing, decks revolving around them aren't as numerous as one thinks it is, and the second effect is basically a more complicated way to gain an extra turn. Not to mention, a five-mana three-color creature spell that enables the second ability is rather complicated when there are a lot easier and stronger ways to do so, like Alrund's Epiphany, which allows you to immediately gain an extra turn from a safe spot at the cost of one more mana while giving you two evasive cherry tappers. Also, the list focuses more on the general play, not really niche success in a certain format. And at least Rowdy Crew can be a mini-wheel effect that can pump itself to more valuable stats. Build the deck right, and it's easier to combo with.

Great you're expanding DL. Just an FYI, the newer players could be confused by you saying "playing cost" or "Converted Mana Cost" for a card when the modern releases have worded with the key words " Mana Value" instead. Just wanted to give a heads-up. Also, idea: what are the main archetypes of Magic? They're totally different than Yu-Gi-Oh archetypes.
@dstreetz91
@dstreetz91 2 жыл бұрын
Yugioh kind of has the same archetypes in combo, control, and aggro that Magic does, but the fundamental differences between MTG and Yugioh is that Yugioh encourages combo while MTG actively discourages combo at least right now. Part of that is because yugioh has no mana system, they just have a "once per turn" system for cards usually. Not to mention basically every yugioh deck has combo's they can execute regardless of their status as an aggro, control, or combo deck.
@NeroLordofChaos
@NeroLordofChaos 2 жыл бұрын
@@dstreetz91 eh, I'd say Magic incentivives "efficient combos" rather than saying it discourages it entirely. One or 2 card combos as opposed to yugioh combos that can be the entire deck in card count. Magic does focus on synergistic interactions more than true combos to be fair though.

Alternate title: 5 cards that were made to limited, 2 actually good cards, 2 bad cards and archangel light. For example, soul of ravinica is a 6/6 flier for 6 in a single color. Thats good enough stats to pull you toward its colors in draft. Add the mana sink ability that you can even activate from your grave to draw a couple cards (or even 3, its format had a multicolor theme) and you have one of the top cards of almost any format ever. And it was in a lower powered core set...

An important detail about Avacyn's Memorial: it was printed for Commander. And in Commander it's A LOT better Not only because bigger cmc are more viable, but also because being an Artifact can be an asset, since effects that Exile creatures are fairly common, but a lot fewer effects can Exile an Artifact and a lot of them are tied to a permanent a return the Exiled card if the permanent leaves the battlefield. Also, in Commander there are a lot of viable and reliable ways to reduce the cost of Artifacts. And you can also tutor and cheat yor way into it via Oswald Fiddlebender.

Love that you are doing this, but maybe try looking up how the planeswalker and place names are pronounced. Gavin (one of the game designers) has a channel talking about Magic and well he knows how to pronounce Chandra and Tibalt. Another nitpick would be that you did wrong a few times now is flying. Creatures with flying can be blocked by creatures with flying or reach. The later is only a defensive ability, but it will come up sooner or later i believe. This list for rares would be interesting as mythic rares are comparatively a recent addition and a lot of old sets only went up to rare ans have weird cards. That said another fun list as a cross promotion could be "Top 10 tribal decks" or "Top 10 (draft) archetypes" though for the latter you probably would need to explain bow the term is used differently in Magic then in Yu-Gi-Oh. Another good idea could be "Top 10 strictly better/power creept cards" again to tie it to videos you did on this channel. I really hope this works for you. I personally found you via your wow channel and was very happy to see you did other things after I dropped of that game after Legion and having seen things like the weather report channel I know you do try. There's also cards that state "Exile target permanent" that are getting a bit more common which goes past the entire effect on instant speed to completely negate your combo without a counter, making you go -2 for no effect.

It's a pretty niche situation, but Chandra Ablaze in pretty good in a Madness Commander deck. You're playing Black/Red for that so, pitching a red card, dealing 4 to something and Madnessing it into play at a reduced cost is pretty strong on a +1. Also, her minus can let you Madness in multiple cards and deals with any opponents drawing too much while refilling your hand. It's not good anywhere else (that I know of), and TBH, it's only good in that deck, not great, since 6 mana is pretty steep. That being said, if we're counting all formats, I think top 10 worst is a bit too mean for her. (Also one of my favorite MTG character arts.)

Chandra Ablaze can be made quite playable if you take advantage of Madness, the keyword that allows you to cast cards as you discard them at cheaper costs. I carry a couple of her in one of my burn decks as a discard trigger for some madness spells such as fiery temper and Violent Eruption. Utilising this Chandra gets +1 loyalty and deals 4 damage to anything and Fiery temper lets me deal 3 damage to anything for 1 red mana (basically a Lightning bolt) that seems like a good deal to me.

To give some of these cards a tiny, miniscule, bit of credit: - Empty the Pits: If... and that's a HUGE if... you are able to resolve this during your opponent's end phase, you're in a good position to win next turn. The number of bodies you make will make it hard for your opponent to come back from. - Soul of Ravnica: if you pull this as your MR in a Limited Format, it is a good beatstick. A 6/6 flier is hard to stop in a limited format - Ugin's Nexus: There are a LOT of decks that has great sacrifice engines to gain benefits while blowing their own stuff up. These decks can run this Nexus as their version of Time Warp + additional benefits. I just wish Nexus had a more relevant active effect tho. Also, while I said they CAN run it, I'm not saying they should - Avacyn's Memorial - This card will work great with cards like March of the Machines (U4 Enchantment that turns all Non-creature artifacts you control in to artifact creatures with P/T equal to their mana cost). Should you, tho? Nope... - Angel's Light: This is the best... coaster... you can use for your drink bec the art is pretty good Both Molten Tail Masticore and Reap Intellect are just... "improved" ... versions of older cards: Masticore and Lobotomy. However, as Mythic Rares, they are just HORRID. Back in the days of the original Masticore, a 4 mana 4/4 artifact vanilla is actually kinda decent as there are actually more of that mana to statline that has drawbacks. Hollow Warrior, for example, is a 4 mana 4/4 that cant attack or block unless you tap a creature you control (prototype Vehicles, I guess). Masticore was great back then. About a decade later, they did pretty much nothing to update Masticore to adjust to the powercreep. If MoltenTail Masticore had Indestructible and costs 2 mana to use its ability to banish another card, I can see it being used... but now... i assume it confused newer players bec they're thinking: Why run THIS card? o.O Lobotomy was an uncommon that costs UB2 to snag one card. Ive seen some older U/B control decks back in Invasion run this to get rid of devastating spells like Urza's Rage, but not too common bec as you said, it often misses its mark. I actually prefer the 5 extraction cards that can only specific targets, but at least you get to hit that thing you want to.

Being mainly an MTG(and in the past WoW) player that also dives into YGO and Hearthstone occasionally, I have followed your channels for quite some time now. Good to see the new content branching out to MTG too, as it will be quite fun to watch. I agree with the picks, though I'd put Ugin's n\Nexus lower on the list if not at all on it. The effect is slow, yes, but extra turns can be game winning on their own. I play Commander 99% of he time, so I judge cards based on their viability on that format and, while underwhelming, Ugin's Nexus can be used. Having a way to generate copies of the Nexus then letting them die to the Legend Rule(or sacrificing it) would allow for infinite extra turns. The rulings can be a bit confusing, but you do get the replacement effect to exile the token and get the extra turn.

Chandra Ablaze in a mono red burn deck is busted. Being able to recast all of your burn spells at once is to one shot your opponent is so satisfying. Also, her plus 1 ability can allow you to get more of your burn spells or mana producing red spells in your graveyard for free damage.

Magic isn't as resource intensive as Yugioh is. Card advantage isn't as crucial. It's all about tempo, putting down your threat and dealing with your opponent's threats. I agree with some of the cards on the list, but about half of them do see a lot of play in regular EDH. Ugin's Nexus for example. It's a generic take an extra turn card in EDH decks that can utilize it. Daretti, Scrap Savant can sac it with it's minus ability AND bring back another artifact from your graveyard. Giving you an extra turn, and another resource to your battlefield. There's plenty of other mythics that are worse.

A note about Chandra, and why she's better than you gave her credit for: She is very obviously designed for a spell heavy burn deck, she wouldn't typically be placed in the sort of build where you have to be concerned about creatures being lost to her ability. Realistically, you'd cheat her out with Seething and then spend a few turns burning your opponent before triggering her ultimate and trying to kill outright, probably re-triggering Seething to generate even more burn with the cards in your hand or flood the field with the few big monsters you do have. TL;DR: Chandra's +1 isn't bad, you just have to know how to use it, and her -7 is excellent in the kind of deck she belongs in.

Yoooooo the Duel Logs from the Duel logs duel logs making a MTG Card review (if that's what you call it). Thats crazy. Anyways for each card with a personal opinion: Empty the Pits is okay, its better off using the card for sac decks for something like Ashnod's Altar, you wouldn't realistically use the card for the zombies alone, still its lackluster in comparison of other cards. Soul of Ravnica, never heard of the card and I probably wouldn't touch that card cause there's just so much better card draw in all of magic. Reap Intellect has some use but outside of Limited you dont really benefit from such card. Ugin's Nexus is both a floodgate (sorta) and an infinite combo in some EDH decks. Its usually a build around but in a regular deck it has little use. Molten-Tail Masticore is interesting, its worse than Rotting Regisaur though and that's a 3 mana 7/6 with a similar downside, heck even Daemagoth Titan chumps it and that's a 4 mana 11/10 Chandra Ablaze is as Chandra does as she is. Nothing to say really, she just does what Chandra usually would do on any other Chandra, but hey at least its not random discard like Tibalt. I mean its not a bad mythic card video without Tibalt. Oh Tibalt, you can try making him work with stuff like madness or flashback but he's just so laughable. Avacyn's Memorial is a new one, unless you can cheat it into play and animate it into a 8/8 I wouldn't see why you would want to run it. Hellcarver Demon is a funny card, realistically you have this in your deck to give it to your opponent and with a forced attack that way their lands blowup and the chances they get anything to remedy it is very very low. Fun fact of Archangels light, this is one of the first few Mythics that was revealed early on in Magics history, as is Tibalt. Crazy how different cards have been in the past few years. Also Life gain is an annoying deck to playing against, its like Amorage if you wanna compare it to yugioh. A suggestion I have for a video would be the opposite of this once with it being the best commons of Magic. That way people can get a better understanding of how laughable some higher rarity cards can be when a common card can outright be much better in terms of overall value or impact.

Love the mtg content but this style of list doesnt really work with mtg like they do yugioh. The main problem is why yeah none of these saw competititve play some are playable in commander and some of the creatures are actually amazing in draft. Draft is magics 2nd most popular format recently eclipsed by commander but you open packs and make decks with whatever jank you open. Certain cards are busted there but see zero competititve play which is why some rare cards get bad effects is to not mess up the draft format as having easy access to powerfull mythics alters balance and having a bunch of bad mythics dilutes the pool for other decks trying to make something decent with packs. Soul of ravnica is bad but hes a draft bomb that can easily win games same with the manticore like discarding a card ecery turn can be a posotive and you draw redundant lands in mtg some games so your not always discarding usefull things. 2nd issue isnt exactly your fault but more game knowledge is kinda required to actually evaluate the cards. On ugins nexus for example your not gonna play instants an sorceys like naturalize to destroy your own artifacts, you would play a card like arc bound ravager which is a creature that lets you sacrifice an artifact at instant speed to put a +1 counter on himself. Youd play cards that are decent and you could put a bad alternate win condition into a decent deck which is kinda the essence of commander alot of bad cards can be amazing.

I think the main issue itself is that Magic has so many formats whereas Yugioh realistically only has the one format, and the overall format of these videos are to inform about cards as a whole. If they were presented with examples or comparisons (like some cards here were) through and through, then the format could sorta work as the viewer can get some insight about what card would be a better pick.

You could theoretically dump instant / sorcery damage spells, some copy spells like Dual Strike (2 mana) (When you cast your next sorc/instant spell this turn with mana value 4 or smaller, copy the spell) with Chandra into the graveyard, try to get out some Fire Servants (5 mana) (instant and Sorcery spells u control deal double damage, stacking), I would use something like Runaway Steam-Kin (2 mana) (when u cast a red spell and it got less than 3 +1/+1 counters on it add 1. remove 3 counter: Add 3 Red mana [mana ability no tabbing]) and keep them alive until you can just nuke your opponent with the -7. Chandra is great for a Burn deck :). Hm Red/Green and slap Hydras Growth (3 mana) on the Steam-Kin and add 1 counter on cast and at the beginning of your upkeep double the counter on the monster. Liesa, Forgotten Archangel is nice too, but 5 mana. getting your died non token creatures back to your hand at the beginning of any end step. And exiling opponents creatures whenever they would be destroyed. Then if your opponent annoys you, use something like Valorous Stance (2 mana instant) (choose one: target creature indestructible, or destroy target creature with tough 4+) make her indestructible and drop a board clear like Vanquish the horde (8 mana) destroy all creatures. Pay 1 less for each creature on the battlefield. Great against swarm decks or as last resort against buffed up mega creatures. Your angel is indestructible, so all creatures get wiped, you get yours back to your hand and opponent puts his into exile. You don't believe how many player just quit after I pulled this in ranked.

hearing you talk about the red cards kinda hurts. Tibalt is awful yeah, but looting (drawing and then discarding) is very common in red and its only form of draw most of the time, and usually its pretty decent. Red normally has no real problems discarding cards and if it does just throw down an elixir of immortality and you're good. Also red has a few cards that are just awesome to discard such as Anger (ohhh i love discarding this one xdd). Second yeah it REALLY depends what format you're looking at, I assume you're talking about something like modern or standard. But abunch of these cards could be pretty damn good in commander (Avacyn is fucking amazing in commander, her memorial is ehh but still powerful ass shit as it at the least gives your commander indestructible.) Ugin's nexus is good too, It can be a very funny combo with stuff like Emrakul promised end, and also artifact removal might be the most common removal out there, so changes it gets destroyed even on accident are quite high. I cant say much for 60 card formats as i dont know really anything about them, but i'm willing to bet that at least Chandra is pretty good considering how red plays. P.S.- Definetly look into commander, I think it is the format that makes magic the most fun because it's pretty unique compared to other card games. (it's the most popular now for a reason). I know you like doing history videos and that'd be a cool topic because not many know the history of commander/EDH

Ugin’s Nexus and Prototype portal work well together. The Manticore’s upkeep cost would be used to pitch creatures to the graveyard, at which point you would exile said creature card. Consider Chandra Ablaze as you would a spellshaper from Mercadian Masques: you are changing the red card from whatever it was to an improved Lightning Bolt. This direct damage happens as soon as it resolves so it does not have summoning sickness nor can it be blocked by other creatures in combat the same way Elspeth’s soldiers can. Chandra is granting player/creature/planeswalker removal. Much better +1 than Tibalt. Speaking of Tibalt: thank you for bringing him up. He will be a nice piece in my Eruth, Tormented Profit commander deck where discarding after “drawing” is never an issue, turning Tibalt into my own personal Howling Mine with insurrection benefits. It took 10 years but I finally found a way to make Tibalt useful, thank you. I agree with SoR being on the list but would like to compare it to Sphinx of Magosi: one of the best monoblue beefy beaters ever printed. Both are flying 6/6s for 6, which for monoblue is a good cost. Thought Devourer was a flying 4/4 for 4 2UU that decreased your max hand size by 4. Big monoblue fliers are always expensive. Yes, I am comparing a mythic to rares and yes, next to no one plays Thought Devourer anymore for obvious reasons, but do recall Vizzerdrix was a 7 mana 6/6 vanilla blue creature. The monoblue creature rate is good. The issue is we are talking monoblue. SoR’s activated abilities are best in a 5 color deck. Heartstone and biomancer’s familiar get this cost to be 3UU for up to five card but that is assuming you have had the setup for this card. Since running five colors, there are many better creatures to run that are hard to prevent their combat damage. So yes SoR should totally be on this list. Hellcarver Demon is nuts in Type 4, but first you have to know about the Type 4 format, then either have a Type 4 stack or know someone that has one. Oh well. I am kind of curious about how much lower your top pick’s mc would need to be for it to be deemed “playable”. It definitely is not playable…even in Type 4.

Ugin's Nexus is amazing with repeatable token making shenanigans. First create as many tokens as you can with Nexus on the field, then return Nexus to your hand or have it be the target of the legend rule instead of a token, and finally take your extra turns. You only lose the turns when Nexus is out when you go to take those turns not when Nexus ability resolves. It also works because Nexus has a replacement effect so you can exile tokens to trigger the extra turns. It can also be used against Extra Turn strategies in commander.

Chandra Ablaze I will say is a decent way to get a wheel effect in Commander that also punishes that blue player that just drew 10 cards. Most other hand refreshes in other colors refill to the same quantity as was lost, so it won't punish the huge hand players and other wheel effects usually refill to a respectable hand size (good for you, but also good for enemies). Similar to Sorin with life points, Chandra is mostly to punish that one guy who went near infinite on cards. Since you're just using her for that one effect, her + and her ultimate both are fairly irrelevant and some planeswalkers really are for one haymaker effect over being an actual persistent threat. Most formats don't have enough draw power for that to really matter enough though. She is kind of expensive even with all that though, especially for red which lacks inherent ramp. For Avacyn Memorial, I think a more direct comparison is to Darksteel Forge. But Forge protects itself and is pure colorless, making it much easier to turbo. It's protection also guards something you can easily build a deck around as opposed to legendries, which you usually only have a smattering of in decks if at all.

The problem with chandra ablaze in commander is it's cost. Once you have the mana to make chandra, the moment you drop her someone will probably play a counterspell or removal just so you don't do the -2. The -2 is so strong in multiplayer that if you do put her on the board, you just also put a target on your head.

Sweet to see you branching out into other card games on your main channel. Speaking of Reap Intellect, the card it's based on, Lobotomy, costs 2UB (the same as Reap Intellect without X) to do what Reap Intellect does once. Which is still not a great rate of return, but the fact that reap intellect costs 1 more to do what Lobotomy does with a chance of scaling is embarassing for a modern card, considering that lobotomy was from 2001.

I remember when the new ‘Psychatog’ was one of the best, perhaps the best deck, in standard. Having played against ‘Fact of Fiction’, which was in the deck, it didn’t surprise me when players quickly began calling it, ‘FOF END OF TURN, FOR THE WIN’? I think they used an acronym FOFETFTW’. Anyway, my friend brought 4 ‘Sudden Impacts’ to the table. When one of the regulars cast it end of turn, he acted frustrate and put all 5 cards in one pile. The guy picked the pile with 5 cards, then my friend Sudden Impacted him. Funny play. I doubt my friend won the match. He didn’t say. .you need that red plainswalker when you need ‘5’ Sudden Impacts in your deck. With 5, you can’t lose

Haha, I saw Avacyn in the thumbnail and was ready to be upset, but I honestly like this list. I pulled Archangel's Light in a booster once, and I was very not happy. Funny that you should mention Tibalt will cause you a lot of pain, because that's actually his flavor. In lore, he's a sadist who performed experiments to inflict as much pain as possible to his victims, and devils gathered at his lab to observe and give advice. Naturally, he's a huge headache to use yourself.

Like, Masticore was a 4/4 that came down for what was the curve at the time, dodged a lot of common removal and killed one thing every turn while feeding itself the creatures to do so, it was fine for the time, as was the original Masticore, Magic just became The Creaturing soon after and it makes it look worse comparatively
@Necroskull388
@Necroskull388 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s critical to note that you can discard a creature to pay for its cost, then spend your mana for the turn removing their creature (thus trading a card for a card and mana for mana) and attacking in for damage. Nowadays, you can get a much better deal, but back then that was a decent proposition.

@@williamdrum9899 And the "Win on resolve" aspect is why I argue Thoracle Should be banned. Same reason for Coalition Victory. It can only be countered with, well, a counter effect, which decks can't reasonably be expected to have. Whereas Lab Man or that one Jace has a similar game plan to it (So self decking doesn't become unavailable to people as a build) while still leaving other responses open (And it can be a great moment to doomblade your opponent's Lab Man in response to their final draw spell. The potential of that adds some real nice tension, too.)

Although she's my weakest Planeswalker, my first pack I ever bought was a VOW draft pack and it had Alt art, borderless, foil, Chandra Dressed to Kill. My second had her emblem. So she has a lot of sentimental value to me. Teferi M21 is my strongest due to it being able to play at anytime and only having to tap mana once to put it on the field. I can literally just keep drawing and discarding cards over and over again during the opponents turn going +1 each time. By the next turn I can take 3 turns in a row.

I think the -1 in Chandra Ablaze is way overstated. It's really card neutral since 4 damage gets rid of plenty of creatures. A planeswalker's ability to protect themselves is really important, and doing 4 damage to any creature definitely does that. It's just 6 mana is way too much. By the time you reach that point, that won't actually protect her. I could definitely see this effect being playable, even if not competitive, at a lower mana cost.

Actually while not as good as pure looting (drawing a card than discarding) is not a bad effect it's actually a great effect even if you toss the card just drew away it means that you saved your draw step next turn from being a bad draw and can improve your draws overall, plus in many cases it actually better than pure draw due to massive amount of discard synergies in the, no what make Tibalt's +1 bad is the having to discard at random part as you don't get choose what card to discard it pretty much makes it a worse Rummage effect, now Rummaging is the step-brother to looting (discarding a card than drawing) is way worse since you first have to discard a which maybe all the cards in your are decent and than you may just draw a land or worse card putting in a worse position than when you started, even it does have the same synergy for discard as looting since you don't get to see the card your going draw is good or bad till after you discard your stuck with it if it's bad unlike looting where you can just chuck it. Plus Tibalt was Wizards first (and only) 2 mana walker and was a test to see if such a cheap walker could be useable the answer is yes but the reception from tibalt was so poor that they never tried again

Archangel's Light would have been good if the mana cost would have been 3, like "I have 7-mana lands, so attack with everything, tap all, Wrath of God, then the A.L.", this way would be like a "let's restart the game, but I'll have more time than you". Or a straightforward "draw a card for each 5 life gained this way". For a 7 mana cost, anyway, or less. THAT would be useful.
