I know, right?? People who want that narrative _don't watch Sesame Street._ Abuse is only playable for laughs when either the perpetrator is an inept, constantly-foiled idiot (like every Looney Tunes villain) or the victim is trapped merely by proximity and circumstance (like Squidward who has to work with and live next door to SpongeBob). The moment you put those two in a loving relationship, it ceases to be funny.

Let's not forget the time Ernie manipulated Bert into playing the Feelings Game with him and it drove Bert insane to the point he runs out of their apartment. Ernie, lying to and playing mind games with your roommate into joining a silly game with you is not how a friendship works. Honestly, as much as I love Ernie, I wouldn't say he's a jerk, but more of a klutzy dunce. It's a miracle Bert was able to put up with his roommate's hijinks after all these years on Sesame Street.

I think he does the klutzy dunce act, on purpose. While crying at the theater, everything goes out of hand, and goes to normal mode, like it isn't happening, and on top of that, gets Burt in trouble and takes his seat, in another theater. Yeah, klutzy dunce.

I think the worst thing he has done to Bert is that in the episode "The Last Straw" he finally has had enough of Ernie's crazy, and very LOUD shinageins that he ends up moving his own bed outside and finds a quiet place to take a nap and then he says to Big Bird, & Alan is that "Sometimes I think Ernie and I are just to different to be friends" and I have to agree! Bert I feel your pain you should really get a different roommate just once in a newer episode on Sesame Street.

He did move out several times during some of the earlier episodes. He tried to live with Big Bird and Oscar but didn't work out. He ends up back with Ernie. I feel for the guy but seeing that it's supposed to resemble friendship and how much you can get mad at your friend for things they either did they can always come back and still LOVE you for you.

One time, Ernie woke Bert up declaring, “Boy, am I thirsty!” And the way he says it, you can tell he’s telling Bert, “Hey, get me some water!” Bert tells him to get his own water, but Ernie simply explains that he can’t, because his body is just too tired to move. It’s at this point that I would‘be kicked Ernie out of the apartment (plus all the other stuff he’s done), just for the night. Seriously, have him get his own dang water.

Here are some other contenders/honorable mentions…… 1. Ernie’s heavy and light demonstration game……… While Ernie talks about light objects while handling a feather, a tissue, and cotton candy, poor Bert is forced to handle a barbell, a boulder, and a piano. When Burt collapses after no longer being able to handle the piano, Ernie has the audacity to ask if the piano is OK rather than asking if his old buddy is OK. 2. Pizza and grape juice……… Bert and Ernie are getting ready to have pizza and grape juice, but to Bert’s demise, Ernie has more pizza and juice, and he eats up eating and drinking most of his pizza and juice. Then he finds out that Bert has more pizza and juice and ends up eating and drinking Bert’s share. 3. Letting go of balloons……… Night time…… after Bert tells Ernie that the balloons will eventually deflate, Ernie feels sad, but then decides to set the balloons free so at last sight, they will remain full of air. When Burt complies, he makes Ernie promise to go to sleep when they release the balloons. Of course, Ernie fails to keep his promise, and continues to talk about the balloons where they will end up……… Bert has had enough of this BS, and runs out of the bedroom screaming and throwing a tantrum. 4. Bedmaking… Bert volunteers to make Ernie’s bed because we all know that Bert likes to keep things tidy…… This brings out a rarity of OCD in Ernie, who keeps criticizing Bert on how he’s doing, such as one side being too long, too short, etc. After the bed is finally made, Ernie claims that he is exhausted from all the hard work of telling Bert on how to make the bed and decides that he’s going to get in bed and take a nap

He also woke up Oscar the Grouch and blamed it on Bert: There was also a time where there was a blackout on Sesame Street. He woke Bert up in the the middle of the night and began pestering him with questions. He asked why it was so dark and why the lights weren’t working. Bert explains what a blackout is, but Ernie still pesters Bert with questions such as can we watch television, can we listen to the radio, or can we listen to a record player. You can’t do any of that stuff without electricity and there is no electricity because of the blackout. Ernie then decides to call someone on Sesame Street and tell them about the blackout. Bert tries to go back to bed, but he hears an angry voice on the other end of the phone. Turns out it’s Oscar the Grouch and is angered by being woken up. He threatens that whoever was calling him won’t get any sleep for a week and angrily demands to know who’s calling him. Ernie says “it’s Bert” before hanging up the phone.

I can think of several other things that Ernie has done to Bert: 1. He buys licorice and wants to share it, but one piece is too long and then Ernie keeps eating the licorice until it gets equal. 2. Bert gives his neice a bath when Ernie realizes there are no toys in the tub for the little one to play with. So he grabs a bunch of bath toys and fills up the tub until no one can fit. However, Ernie ends up getting in and notes that he can't waste the bathwater. 3. Ernie makes a sculpture of Bert out of clay, but then realizes he ran out of clay for Bert's nose. So he takes off Bert's actual nose and sticks it on the sculpture. 4. Ernie plays his drum while Bert goes out to mail a letter. He said he would leave without his key. Ernie continues to play his drums while he hears knocking. He then finally realizes that he heard someone knocking on the door..It was Bert the whole time and he complains about not getting in. Ernie makes Bert feel even worse by making him go back outside and knock the door out. 5. Ernie and Bert play a heavy and light game, where he makes Bert carry all the heavy stuff. 6. Bert writes a letter until he sees Ernie feeling hot. He decides to turn on the fan. He thinks he will be cooler if he increases the fan speed, which makes Bert's papers blow away. Bert is now mad at Ernie and says he is "hot and bothered". Therefore, Ernie suggests cool air and turns the fan back on. 7. Finally, it is from an album, but Bert takes a bath until Ernie comes in and decides to bring the piano into the bathroom. Bert gets triggered right away and asks Ernie to leave, but then he suggests a sing-along and starts playing the piano. Bert refuses to sing along, of course, but Ernie is convincing him to, anyway. Why can't he just leave Bert alone and let him relax for a while?

Here are some other examples… 1. Ernie brought home two slices of apple pie for him and Bert to share. Burt had pointed out that Ernie had given him the smaller piece, and Ernie said that he knew that and Ernie intended to keep the big piece from himself. Bert points out Ernie’s impoliteness, and mentions that if he had the two pieces, he would offer the bigger piece to Ernie…… Of course, Ernie is the one who has the bigger slice of pie in the end anyway…… Leaving Bert confused and dismayed. 2. Bert is saving a cookie for himself, but Ernie is hungry for that cookie. Ernie’s way to solve the problem is to share the cookie, but Bert is against the idea because he has been saving this cookie all day for himself (which I can’t blame him). But we all know how manipulative Ernie can be, so he tells Burt that if it was his cookie, he would share it with his old buddy, which Bert highly doubts. Bert finally gives in and asks to share the cookie, and Ernie agrees, splitting it in half and eating his half of the cookie, thinking Bert. But wait………… Just before the skit ends, Ernie asks Burt if he would share half of that half of a cookie, and Bert screams out of frustration. 3. Thirrrrrrrsty…. During the night, Ernie keeps complaining that he’s thirsty, but tells Bert that he’s too tired to get himself a drink of water. So poor Bert ends up getting him glass after glass of water because he was getting annoyed with Ernie saying that he is so thirrrrrrsty! After the last glass of water, Ernie still wouldn’t shut up…… Only he kept saying that he WAS Thirsty, causing Burt to whimper out of fatigue and annoyance

That was his nephew. I recall Ernie trying to paint a portrait of Bert and he does it all wrong. Ernie says he’d fix it but instead of making the picture different, he made Bert look like the picture. Another time, Bert was leaving for a Pigeon Lover’s Party and he had to dress nice. Much to Ernie’s surprise, he sees that Bert looks so different that Ernie thinks it’s not him. Bert tries to convince him but Ernie still doesn’t buy it. Bert had to undo his look to prove he IS Bert. One of the early sketches had Ernie eating one half of Bert’s cake and fibbed to the latter that a monster ate it. When Bert leaves again, a real monster comes to eat the other half. When Bert comes, he doesn’t believe that the monster ate the other half and that Ernie is lying.

Then there was an episode back in early 2000 when Big Bird let Ernie and rubber ducky join the birdkateers, and Ernie wanted everybody (Including Big Bird) to do duck related activities from a duck dance to a duck cheer, and Ernie ended up taking over and turning it into the duckiteers, leaving Big Bird chagrined and annoyed by Ernie’s antics.

My favorite is the paperclip one. Ernie asks Bert a metaphorical question about what would happen if he were to be playing with Bert's paperclip collection and accidentally drop them in the sewer. Bert tells him he'd be upset. Then Ernie reveals he really did lose his paperclips.

I do have other worst Ernie and Bert moments. For instance, Ernie destroyed two of Bert's hats before he went to the pigeon convention. Also, Ernie took up all the space in the bath tub by putting a lot of bath toys and floaties for Bert's nephew. And, Ernie plays the bugle and drums in the middle of the night to put himself to sleep, instead of stopping and thinking before he does so and wakes Bert up. And also, Ernie tried some incorrect strategies of watching a movie since he was sitting behind a lady with a tall hat; he tried switching seats and sitting on Bert's lap. And I almost forgot, Ernie was going to share some apple pie with Bert, and decided to give Bert a smaller piece and he can keep the big slice for himself. I also remember when he ate all of Bert's pizza slice and juice only to make the amount even.

Here's another SS story idea: A Christmas Carol-esque one in which a spirit (resembling a CGI Jim Henson) visits Ernie in a dream and shows him all the bad things he's done to "old buddy" Bert through the years. Sesame Street looked to A Christmas Carol for inspiration in the Special Sesame Street Christmas (1978) special. Maybe Ernie can be redeemed, like Oscar was in said special.

In talking about the "Ernie's Barber Shop" routine, the narrator forgot to mention that this was a three part story. The first part, as shown in the video, is where Ernie cuts off all of Bert's hair. In the second part, Ernie tries to "help" Bert, first by covering his bald head with a huge curly wig, which Bert says will make his friends laugh at him. Ernie then says Bert needs a beard, so "your friends won't recognize you." When Bert says the beard (which is pretty long) is "silly," Ernie replies that "a beard is silly without a mustache," and he puts one on Bert that's so big, it covers his mouth. As if that wasn't bad enough, the wig, beard, and mustache cause a little boy monster (a brownish early version of Grover) to mistake Bert for his "daddy," and he drags Bert off to his home. In part three, Bert returns to the shop with his regular hair grown back. Apparently, the monster's family helped to make the hair grow back by spraying "some sort of special monster stuff on it." Then Ernie notices that Bert hasn't said anything since his return. When Bert does open his mouth, he speaks with the voice of the COOKIE MONSTER saying "Cooookiieee!"

Didn’t mention when Ernie dropped a whole bucket of buttered popcorn on Bert’s lap at the movies, or when he let a frog sit in his bowl of oatmeal while it eats it. Another time he wouldn’t let Bert back in the apartment as he was locked out. Bert was getting them dinner and forgot his money. Ernie left him kicking and screaming at the door. Bert says, I’m moving out. Ernie has a long list of mean things he’s done to Bert. Even eating his food and doesn’t share equally with him. Some friendship 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

That Ernie's Barbershop is a THREE part sketch. What you have here is part one. In part two with Bert, still furious about his bald head, Ernie helps him out by putting a wig on him, but it doesn't stop there, he also gives him a fake Moustache and Beard! In the third and final part, which is the shortest, Bert's hair has grown back. Ernie is very happy, and wants him to say something. Bert just yells "COOKIE!!" in said monster's voice! The End.
