In an uplifting aftermath to the Wicked Witch episode, Mr. Rogers reached out to Margaret Hamilton so she could appear on his show and show to the kids at home that the Wicked Witch is just a character Margaret plays.

The Mister Rogers episode came out a year before the Sesame street episode. The reason she was on his show was that kids were scared of her character in The Wizard of Oz (at the time, Oz was shown on TV once a year and most families watched it as it was a big television broadcast like the Super Bowl or the Oscars, so some little kids must have seen it and got scared of the witch).

I’m on the spectrum and wish Sesame hadn’t partnered with Autism Speaks. Like many, I consider them eugenicist and a hate group. I also wish Julia had more of her own stories, rather than being a character the others “explained.” That said, Julia is a lovely little girl, and I hope she’s the first of many neurodivergent, disabled, and dynamic kids’ show characters.
@GriffinGuitartwelve
@GriffinGuitartwelve Жыл бұрын
I'm on the spectrum as well and echo your sentiment. I've always found it confusing that Julia is "officially" autistic. It's extremely hard to make an autistic character on anything and have it be accurate because autism is different all across the board. I identify far more with Bert, Ernie, and Grover than I do with Julia. She's kind of one-dimensional in my opinion. It's also arguable that every single (Muppet) character on the show is neurodivergent in some way. I don't think all of them are autistic, but they are all quirky, and usually "quirky" is indicative of at least one kind of neurosis if not more. You can't be normal and also be weird :P That just wouldn't make sense!

I think they handled the Mr. Hooper's death thing very well and not a lot of kids shows talk about death. Which is something we all will have to deal with, even as kids. It also was clearly a very meaningful episode from the Sesame Street cast and crew and its clear they are hurting while trying to do the show. This needed to be done and acknowledged.

When I was a kid, it drove me CRAZY that no one else ever saw Snuffie and they didn't believe Big Bird that he existed. The humans would just barely miss seeing this furry brown GIANT elephant thing! No surprise why did they make celebrities in these? As a dude who is autistic i don't agree on autism speaks they don't help no one but themselves but I welcome the characters who are. Hamilton may be frightening but Mr Roger's episode made less frightening What controversy? What? Cookie is not always on the show? I got no words to say Who doesn't poke fun at shows when studio controls the shows? Snuffy is a dude he's real Okay I won't touch on the subject I was never taught at a young age about death. The first time I had experience was a friend's passing it hit me hard and I don't receive counseling. The only time I had fictional death was in transformers 2 but shock I didn't react 1986 I stood in the theater to the end. But still it's not easy teaching young ones the meaning to pass on.

The most controversial moment for me was an episode that aired around 1989-1990. In the episode, there was a fire in the apartment building that Maria, Luis, Susan, and Gordon lived in on Sesame Street. The scenes that showed the fire were dark and creepy. The worst part was that they never said what caused the fire; that made me afraid of fire bursting out all the time for no reason. I was so frightened by the episode that my mom helped me write a letter to the Children's Television Workshop. They sent a reply a few months later saying they were sorry the episode disturbed me. Several years later, when my younger sibling was watching Sesame Street, there was a new episode on fire safety that was much more light-hearted and informative than the one that I had seen. That made me think that there were other kids who were frightened by the episode I saw and the Children's Television Workshop took our comments to heart.

Rebecca of Ms. Mojo, I think “Sesame Street” handled Will Lee ‘Mr. Hooper’s death beautifully. Oftentimes, young kids don’t understand the concept of death until a family member or friend of the family dies. This story gave them a reference point for later in life. Heck, I knewit wasn’t the same ‘Darrin’ on “Bewitched” when I was a little kid.

I'm old enough to remember Roosevelt Franklin, but just barely. I remember the show before Elmo totally took it over (generally accepted by most as the time when it "jumped the shark"). The show also got rid of the character Don Music's habit of banging his head into his piano's keyboard when he was frustrated, and of course the Count's thunderclap as supposedly it was scaring kids. Also, remember that although the median age of the rather audience of the show was 5 when it started this was later moved down to 2 (is that even possible) thus accounting for the more "kiddie-fied" nature of the later output.

While I am way too young overall to have seen the Mr. Hooper episode, I sure could have used it, I had already lost both my grandfathers by the age of 7, one i don't even remember cuz I was literally 2. Having media that covers the idea of "hey there were people who loved you that aren't around anymore and they are people that loved you and you loved right back and they're not around anymore and its so very okay to be sad about that and process those emotions", that IS SO FUCKING IMPORTANT. Kids are so much smarter than so many people give them credit for, they start understanding the world much earlier than anyone thinks and to treat children like their too dumb to understand loss because they are children is just shallow and rude.

The laser pointer episode from 1996 is an unfortunately sabotaged example. It did originally get banned and reshot after complaints from parents and teachers, but for reasons unknown when Amazon and Twitch aired the Transformation week, the banned version came back to the public eye while the reshoot hasn't been released again since the late 00s. I do agree that mojo needs to do some kind of MRN list, thou. Speaking of eyes; I also thought it was strange and funny that Mr. Rogers of all people would get backlash for showing a laser pointer on MRN, yet Schemer carelessly using disappearing ink on Shining Time Station (and accidentally blinding himself with it in a prank backfire) was aok.

There was a moment that I always wondered was controversial because I only saw it once. It was a song I saw called "One Way," which was about a Muppet who couldn't get to his girlfriend because she lived on a one-way street, but then at the end of the song an angel appeared and showed him on a map the correct way to go. I wondered if it was pulled because of religious implications.

I like Oscar the Grouch because he reminds me of my uncle, who is very similar in voice, appearance and occasionally temperament.

Reading these comments and I see a lot of Mr. Hooper comments. I hope somehow Mr. Hooper (or at least his family) can see how loved he was. I think every GenX kid was saddened by his death. I know I still get emotional watching clips of that episode.

As a viewer of the earlier seasons of Sesame Street, I will never understand how the Roosevelt Franklin and the other characters from the Roosevelt Franklin Elementary School segments were seen as negative stereotypes of POC; considering the fact that the slang and the people during the early 70s were speaking in 70s slang. I enjoyed those segments a lot...especially Hard Head Henry Harris.

3:30 | Nothing has changed. Conservatives condemned Kami because of a bigoted, stereotypical association of HIV/AIDS with the LGBTQIA community; her presence, to them, would foster acceptance thereof and they couldn't have that. Wow! Absolutely nothing has changed.

I don't remember much of the show, but I'm pretty sure I only really had some of the more "classic" characters, such as Elmo, Big Bird, Ernie, and Burt. However, as an autistic, I'm glad to see some representation. I don't appreciate Autism Speaks though, or how people think that autism needs a "fix" or "removal". I personally find that my creativity was amplified due to my autism and my being a self taught artist for the same reason. The only thing that really needs to be "done" is that those with autism and other special needs are treated with love and care. Not like idiots or babies, but as regular living beings who require the same love and compassion as those without special needs. We don't need the "aw, poor baby" talk, we just want people to understand that some things are difficult for us and to be patient (I'm not trying to sound like I'm speaking for all, since I don't know everyone and how they'd feel, I just feel odd saying "I" when I'm talking about special needs in general since I know there are others like me).

No mention of the bert and Ernie LGBT showdown Yes sesame workshop did admit their mistake in the hardline stance they took and understood the LGBT community using the pair as a symbol of healthy and loving same sex partnership But oh man that one was ugly for years Also I believe the Katy perry thing was cuz elmo s hand got too close to her hemline which yes is a known sexual gesture Kudos for foreign inclusion tho
