Those Master System examples were all early releases, later ones were much better so your claim of "All" master system box arts being bad is wrong. Also wrong is the claim that the box art was a reason it failed in the states. Nintendo's illegal monopoly and stranglehold on third party developers was the reason no competetor could challenge the NES.

While it might not be the worst, the U.S cover art to ICO on the PS2 is just ugly.. Especially compared to the tasteful European cover. I also generally prefer the European covers to both Metal Gear and Resident Evil over the U.S ones. And don't get me started on the IGN thing with Okami. You knwo what? You should make a list of weird differences between regional covers.

Because it looked like that the original box is in another box and the Konami logo, ESRB, and Nintendo DS logo has been duplicated. They could’ve just took the original and put “Konami’s Hits” at the top of the art rather than just waste all that effort duplicating those components and shrink the box art.

If the old man in the banjo stood out compared to the generic gba cover then how is it bad? Sure its out of place and shouldn't be done in modern times but the music industry has plenty of album arts that don't add up to the artist, the genre or the direction they were going for. On top of that, their number one pic seemed only half as bad when compared to some of the others that were in the list

Have to disagree with Forsaken and Phalanx. Back when I subscribed to magazines there was an interview with the designer. They said that space shooters and the like were all the same with the way they tried to suck in buyers. So they wanted something different. Instead they went with what they called the "heavy huh" and the "double take" approach, and used art that would cause buyers to take another look at the game and increase the chances of buying it.

I like subtle cover arts like RE6's personally; when they try too hard it doesn't look good with your collection, (Plus 6 was a great game, and the subtle cover just shows how humble the developers were about all the awesome they did with it). Forsaken just followed the golden rule of putting chicks in the thumbnail. Not the best honest decision, but a good marketing one as I'm sure many bought it without even knowing what they were getting.

My favorites include Forsaken: Looks more like a survival horror cover. Snow White: Why does every Longsoft/Phoenix Game look like a ripoff Disney despite looking way different in game? Mega Man: Anyone have any insight into why it's like this? It's quite laughable. Phalanx: I can tell exactly why this one is so distinct. The designers wanted to make us curious. Some clarification on why the box art for the Sega Master System's games were so bad: during the run of the Master System, the US distribution was handled by US toy company Tonka. Tonka, who didn't have much (read: ANY) experience with videogames, pretty much threw up basic box art (it didn't help that the company was in dire straits at the time.) By the time Sega reacquired the rights to the Master System, the Genesis was pretty much well on the way. This is reflected in the fact that the last few Master System games have box art that is identical to box art from the Game Gear (basically a portable Master System.) The irony of all this was that during all this time, Nintendo's NES was being distributed by Mattel. However, that contract was done much more coherently, with Mattel having only distribution duties. Even if they did, Mattel, having had their own system once (the Intellivision), was a much better choice to partner up with than Sega did with Tonka.
