I always assumed ff mystic quest was a spin off of the ff games. A sort of lightweight ff for gamers that wanted an entry level ff game. It was released in the uk as i owned and enjoyed it. Even if it was a little basic. There was also a ff mystic quest released for the gameboy. It was also a victim of bad timing, as by the end of '94 developers knew the SNES life cycle wasn't long for the world and so the focus was placed on translating and releasing the much more anticipated FFVI. Most of the RPGs on this list had similar issues, as localizing and translating RPG titles took much longer with less chance of success since a lot of the titles that did get a release in the West suffered from poor sales. In fact I think if Mystic Quest hadn't actually been developed specifically for the West in English first to try and combat that trend, I have my doubts we would have received that game either.

Kamen Rider: Kah-men rider (It roughly means masker rider) Shin Megami Tensei: Shee-n Meh-gah-mee Ten-say You pronounced Mazinger mostly correct Gundam: Gun-dahm Sasuke: Sah-suh-kay (Often, the su in this is pronounced so fast it just sounds like an s, so Sah-s-kay would be correct as well) The vowels in Japanese are similar to Spanish, as in they are always pronounced the same: a-ah, e-eh, i-ee, o-oh, u-oo If you come across something weird, like Gouki or Gokou(the correct spelling of Son Goku's name, often also spelled with a line over the u in Goku) you pronounce the u or the o, depending on the word, double-length (Gouki is pronounced Goh-ki, with the o dragged out just slightly longer than a normal o, Gokou is pronounced Goh-koo, with the u syllabel dragged out slightly long than normal). The easiest way I've found to know how to pronounce these is to look at official romanization, as they will only put the character to be pronounced, with a line over it (so Gouki would sometimes appeer as Gōki [it is actually spelled like this in Baki the grappler] or Gokou would appear as Gokū). I've seen this in person in multiple japanese arcade machines. Iterestingly, I've also seen the American way of spelling Son Goku's name in official japanese games while spending time over there, and more recently, in adverts for Dragon Ball Super. However, if you were to pronounce Goku's name like American's spell it, it wouldn't be Goh-koo, but almost sound like you're saying Coke with a G instead of a C.

I would argue that the reason Secret of Mana did get a PAL release was because of Superplay giving the game such a high score.

@@CurlyheartIf it was a "GoodSet" then it probably did have every game, at least that was originally available to buy in a store. These sets included roms from the USA, U.K. (and some other European countries, depending on the set), and Japan of course. (Other countries around the world mostly only had translated versions of games already produced for developed countries, so the people in the USA that made the GoodSets, didn't seem to care about those). These sets also typically included alpha's, beta's, demo's, unreleased games, bootleg/pirate compilations, test cartridges, one-of-a-kind contest winner cartridge's, homebrew/homemade/hacked/fan translations, etc. Basically any cartridge that the teams could get their hands on, which they would then rip to a computer and make available to the public for free. (I say "typically" because some of the categories I mentioned were roms added in by other pirate teams that weren't necessarily part of the GoodSet).

There's also a fun turn-based tactical airsoft sim called _Ball Bullet Gun._ btw, _Assault Suits Valken_ did see an (albeit edited) Western release as _Cybernator_ and was even featured in Nintendo Power. That game had some amazingly detailed graphics. Also, you forgot to mention that _BS Zelda: AST_ was meant to be played as part of a live real-time event, which added live voiceovers to the game, like a radio drama...there's really nothing else like it! And it'd be amazing if Nintendo finally made a fully-restored version of the game with newly-recorded voiceovers, as part of some upcoming Zelda anniversary. 🤔

One game that I missed in this list is Ihatovo Monogatari (Stories of Ihatovo). Looks like a JRPG but it's not. It's more like a walking simulator with some interesting stories behind it.

For the amount of effort that had to of gone into this, it is a simple travesty that theres only barely 60k views. This is a fantastic list, and you even listed every game i ever took interest in, which is a hell of a lot more than most lists ive seen out there, and ive even got a few to look forwards too now :3 (You even mention Alcahest and Treasures of Rudras! No one ever talks about those D:) . Though one thing that did make me a little sad is the lack of mention of Treasure of Rudras very unique way of doing the story, that being that each play through affects the game world and what you can find in it while playing the others, meaning if you picked up all of the good loot with the first group, you couldnt pick it up with the next group, assuming they ended up in the same place(which happens alot). And of coarse all of the stories converge into an epic final showdown featuring the entire cast, which is just brilliant. Theres also the extremely unique magic system as well, which is one of very few that ive seen that allowed you to craft your own spells using spell keywords , such as ig being basic fire attack, then ignus being a bigger version that hit everything on the field. but it got super complicated as you learned new keywords. . It really really is an overlooked gem... Much like this video now that i think on it :P

Assault Suits Valken did get an official release in UK with a name change. It was called Cybernator :-)

A whole video could be dedicated to the injustice of those in the West not getting Final Fantasy 5 back in the day. And the dev behind GUILTY GEAR made the Sailor Moon fighting game!? I'M THERE!

Assault Suits Valken/Cybernator was definitely released in the West (both US and Europe)

it took me 2 hours searching for a game that I only saw. 11 minutes into this video, and I found it. "Sanrio Smash Ball". Good stuff.

Parodius Da! is actually the first one on Super Famicom and Arcade and the one we got as simply "Parodius" in Europe. The second one, wich is exclusive to Japan, is Gokujou Parodius (but we got it on the Playstation compilation as "Fantastic Journey").

Ran across your video and channel, liked it. Subbed for more cool stuff. We did get screwed in the States, well all outside Japan. That's how it was with anime back in the day, hard to find and out of order episodes.

Top Hat Gaming Man, ok I have a question, I am looking for a obscure snes title that seemed from memory to be japan only. It was in the art style almost exactly as link to the past. The only thing i remember is that it looked like link to the past, but had like jungle/leafy scenery everywhere and it seems like there where dragons and like moving clouds and mist, do you have any idea of what i might be talking about? I saw happyconsolegamer review it in a vid and i have never been able to go back and locate that vid. It seemed like the hair of the characters was similar to like star ocean but the art style resembled strongly link to the past more than anything else

Awesome, leaned a lot ! But not a single Dragon Ball game in the top 100 ? The 2nd and 3rd battle games were good, Hyper Dimension too, and there was a DBZ RPG that looked and sounded funny but had great gameplay

Which of these games would you like to be retroactively localized to the West for Nintendo Switch Online? For me, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Bahamut Lagoon.

GranHistoria or Ganbare Goemon 4 since they don't even have fan translations.

Super Bomberman 3 was released in the US in very limited quantities. (I know because I hesitated on purchasing it when it first came out and couldn't find it just a few months later.)

I've never heard of The Great Battle Series. I wonder why there was no Remake of Dragon Quest IV while there's a Remake of Dragon Quest I through III including Dragon Quest V and VI are all on Super Famicom. I got the Trials Of Mana Remake for PS4. I like that in Japanese Rumi Okubo is the voice of Angela, Akio Otsuka (Snake's Japanese voice actor from Metal Gear) is King Richard and Tomokazu Sugita (Kaz from Metal Gear Solid) is Death Eater/Jester. I forgot to ask: Are the Lists counting up or down?

Another reason to regret that Nintendo canceled the SNES-CD. A lot of these titles would probably have gotten Western releases if the severe cost of mask ROM cartridges could be avoided.
