A great theme of the season was everything Olaf valued being stripped away. He loses his henchpeople in The Slippery Slope, his authority in The Grim Grotto, he breaks up with Esme in The Penultimate Peril and by The End everyone sees him for who he is as his bravado and disguises are washed away. He finally has the Baudelaires, but they are useless to him because they’re stranded from civilisation. His manipulations fail because there’s nothing he can work with on the islanders, who don’t have any of the selfishness and desire Olaf latches on to. Over the seven episodes Count Olaf was deconstructed until he was the man he was before the schism, a man who recited poetry and was in love with Kit, the man he was when he died.

The opera scene was something I didn’t really like, because the scene was fine but it made more sense in the books where it made it sound like Beatrice intentionally killed both of Olaf’s parents with poison darts, but in the show it was an accident and it was only Olaf’s dad, which made the references to 2 poison darts make no sense. Also it being an accident made it sound like not as big a deal is it is in the books when you realize that VFD has done some terrible things. But I’m not that mad about it because the changes were overseen by Daniel Handler so any changes were intended by him.

I think if you want to get into this series, you should read the original books AND watch the Netflix series. They're both fantastic, but the netflix series helps to wrap up loose ends, answer questions that the book was vague about, and give us nice closure to multiple characters that they honestly deserve to have. It gave me flashbacks to the Great Cowboy War of ‘04. I had my girlfriend with me, we had almost defeated the enemy cowfolk. My trusty companion, Markus the horse, led us off towards the village. The sun was setting slowly beyond the horizon, my girlfriend was practicing her lasso skills. We were sharing a romantic moment, I won’t be afraid to admit. If only I could’ve seen what was about to happen. By the time we reached the village, everyone was gone. We went to the saloon, leaving Markus outside. However, instead of seeing our associate cowfolk, we were greeted with our enemies. I made to take out my gun, but before I could Jessica Wildesto lassoed my girlfriend and I to some wood chairs. They interrogated us- asking all about our plans. My girlfriend refused to reveal our plans.. so she was shot. Even though she was the toughest cowgirl I knew, she couldn’t withstand a bullet to her head. Admitting to defeat, I gave away our plans in order to save my own life. They spared me, but I was so ashamed walking outside of that saloon. “Yippykayay!”, they simultaneously yelled to me. I rode off to the city, letting go of my cowboy side. By 2007 I had completely changed myself, and I had already gotten myself a city girlfriend. On the news I saw that the war was over. The bad guys had won. I blame myself for this and I don’t think I’ll ever stop.

Usually they won’t have someone casted so early in a tv series seeing as you only really see the parents in season 3, there would be no way to secure their role in season 1 (as they were not sure if they would get renewed for 2 more seasons) so they just casted people who would resemble their image for the photograph :) x

And when Violet, Klaus and Sunny weren’t born yet. Maybe some more of The Snickets, and Beatrice, when everybody was together and still one noble organisation, but then it leads to the sugar bowl being stolen and how it split up into schisms. I feel like that would be more interesting to watch and so you could get some more background and a clearer idea of what VFD used to be.

Because she took the name of the people that raised her (or was given it), sort of like you would with parents who adopt. That would help secure her as part of a family, instead of being on her own.

Here’s the VFD motto if you don’t know the full thing! “When we grab you by the ankles, where our mark is to be made, You’ll soon be doing noble work, Although you won’t be paid. When we drive you away in secret, you’ll be a voulenteer, so don’t scream when we tell you: The world is quiet here.”

N9 one talks about all the secret messages in the Beatrice letters book I've found one message that I believe is about Olaf and how Beatrice was trying to recruit him but lemony was unsure if they could trust him. Then I went online to see if anyone else found any messages and I only found one other person who had found a message in one of the other letters using a famous roman Cypher he didn't tell what he found because he wanted fresh eyes looking for the codes because he be level that any of the letters could contain multiple messages overlapping one another so if he showed everyone what was there that's all they would see. But why hasn't anyone but me and this one guy been talking about the secret messages. And after all this time why hasn't anyone solved them.

Things the TV series did better this season -Making the Snow Scouts wealthy children turned into orphans. It shows how Olaf's side of the schism is willing to go to great lengths to hurt innocent people -Having Quigley show up in Grim Grotto, rather than just sending a telegraph. It not only gives such a huge character a role in more than one book, but it shows the Baudelaires having to leave Quigley like they did with his siblings in Ersatz Elevator -Hooky showing Sunny sympathy. While it doesn't make sense at first glance, you can see it as a way of him starting over with Fiona. -Having Babs in the Penultimate Peril -Excluding the ambiguity of the Quagmires, Hector, Fiona, Fernald, Phil and Captain Widdershins. It's nice that not everyone's fate is unknown. -Fully explaining the stealing of the Sugar Bowl and how V.F.D. orphaned Olaf. Things they didn't -Introducing O.C.'s like Larry and Jacqueline and not using them properly. Larry's death wasn't relevant outside of his one scene, and Jacqueline wasn't even present -Making Jerome out to be stupid. In the books he shows remorse and arrives with Justice Strauss. -Under-utilizing Hugo, Kevin and Colette. It was nice that they didn't stick with Olaf, but they could've shown up at the hotel -Not having Sir, Charles, Hal, Mr. Remora, Mrs. Bass (although I did like her analogy with Mr. Poe) in the hotel -Leaving out the Denouement brothers' arc of being orphans.

I think the one mayor difference between the Netflix series and the books is how dark it is. In the book it was always dark with Count Olaf being a little more menacing and as well as his troupe. In the Netflix series they are seem to be more silly which make you wonder how they were able to do anything. Another thing is just the mystery. In The End we were left to wonder if The Quagmires, Fiona, Fernald, Justice Strauss, Jerome, and Hector were to survive

The scene in which sunny says she’ll stay to spy on Olaf and then Violet says how will sunny escape and then Sunny ties up her hair and says she’ll invent something is probably my favourite moment in the whole show cause she sees her older siblings getting out of trouble and she knows she can too so she does what her older sister always does and ties up her hair. That is the best scene and always makes me cry

The only change I didn't like was revealing whats in the Sugar Bowl. For such a fascinating Mistery, they should've kept it. The others like the Quagmire and the Baudelaires are a nice happy ending, but the Sugar Bowl should've been kept, as said by Snicket, "in the dark".

I read all the books long before netflix started their series and I would like to say that I liked both, but I was a little mad about some of the things Netflix took out. I actually prefer the sense of mystery that is so prevalent in the books to having everything spelled out for you in the series. Lemony Snicket has a very unique way of writing that kinda forces you to look deeper into the text to try and find out what he's saying. In the book we don't know what Count Olaf is planning until the Baudelaires do. But in the show, we can see exactly what is happening as it's happening, because they show Olaf's plan through the whole thing. Also there are things that can only be captured in writing. Like in one of the books, Lemony writes a secret letter to Kit in the book that the reader is not supposed to see. Also, I really like the ending in the books because in the series, there are 13 books. 13 is known for being unlucky, but at the end of book 13, The End, there's a 14th book. I like to think that the chain of unfortunate events is finally broken, and I imagine that everything worked out fine. Also to those of you who don't know, The Bombinating Beast is most likely the Great Unknown, who is a creature from the Clusterous Forest in Stain'd by the Sea and is quite dangerous. Other things that they changed were that the trial in the penultimate peril didn't go like that at all. The Baudelaires wanted to tell their story and bring count olaf to justice, but they figured out something was suspicious. In the book everybody was blindfolded and Justice Strauss couldn't talk because of Olaf's associates, and the Baudelaires realized Justice wasn't talking so they took off their blinfolds. They never got to have their trial. Next thing they changed was that the Quagmire parent side plot wasn't at all included in the books. In the first episodes they have the Quagmire's parents getting captured and going to peru and all sorts of things, but the books doesn't include that at all. Lastly, (this one is stupid I know) Esme didn't have her fire dress on in the slippery slope. That dress had a mystery around it, as the book said that somebody else had worn that dress long ago, and that the dress had history. Completely removing it made me a little bit sad.

I wish netflix would adopt the prequel of "A series of Unfortunate Event" the "All the wrong question series" which is really good and it would explain how Olaf and Beatrice are both actors and associate when they were young and how Lemony was trained by S. Theodora who also trained Bertrand Baudelaire. gooooodness how I love those books, and all the dramatic ironies. I wish it was the bombinating beast that was inside the sugar bowl, because it would make more sense, a lot of people and associates had tried to protect it and it would fit perfectly inside a sugar bowl.
