Interesting picks, lots of great films. I like that The Neon Demon is in there. That film seems quite polarizing, but I really like it too. Dogtooth and A Ghost Story are some other ones I like. I need to rewatch Cache, it went in a different direction than I expected, I think I would appreciate it more on another viewing. I do tend to like Michael Haneke films generally. I have never seen Dogville or that Monty Python film. Will have to give them a watch sometime. The Monty Python one sounds like something I would like. Great video.

CKprimeval07 i love seeing your passion for Japanese animation in your list. Miyazaki films are absolutely fantastic with my favorite one being the classic Spirited Away. But I think Grave of the Fireflies might be the best studio Ghibli film. I’ve never seen an animation as emotionally powerful as that one. Thanks for sharing your list!

@@TheMisfitPond Thanks. I am a huge fan of animation, especially when they do something outside the norm of most mainstream animation. Here's my current favorite animated movies list on my letterboxd account if you are curious. letterboxd.com/ckprimeval07/list/favorite-animated-movies-1/ There's still a lot of animated films I've yet to see: Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse, Millennium Actress, Night is Short Walk on Girl, etc. On a side note, was 1973 (the year The Holy Mountain came out) the year of trippy and surreal films? Apart from Holy Mountain, there were two really surreal and, in some cases, disturbing animated films: Fantastic Planet and Belladonna of Sadness. Both which are really great films but are probably not for your casual viewer.

I’ve seen less than half of these, I really need to check the other ones out. Persona, Irreversible, Taxi Driver, and Cache are my four favorites, and I don’t know where I’d go after that. Martyrs and the last two Captain America movies get close, along with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, Antichrist, Punch Drunk Love, Mothlight (probably doesn’t count for a favorite movies list because it’s only 4 minutes, but it’s great), and Dancer in the Dark, but I either haven’t seen those ones enough times or recently enough to put them in my top movies confidently. If you haven’t seen Persona, or really any Ingmar Bergman movies, you should. I think you’d really like them. Persona is absolutely phenomenal, but it’s not a good starting point if you expect anything else he did to be like it. It’s far more experimental than anything else he’s done, but it’s also easily the best of the four movies of his that I’ve seen. The opening sequence and a sequence in the middle of the film absolutely blew me away, and there’s a scene towards the end where Bibi Andersson’s character is explaining the other character’s situation and it’s presented in a strange way. Both of these parts are very obvious and easily the most memorable scenes from the movie because of how they break the rules of cinema.

The Misfit Pond that’s a hard question to answer just because Persona is so far from the other works I’ve seen from him. The Seventh Seal is probably the best to start with, but Persona is so different from anything else I’ve ever seen, even from him, that as long as you don’t let it affect your expectations for anything else he’s done, you could watch it first.

There’s a video called “The Last Jedi is amazing and you are all insane” that explains my thoughts a lot better than I can. I also recommend watching interviews with Rian Johnson explaining him controversial decisions. As for why I like the film SO much... it’s a kick ass movie that Breaks cliches in favor of world/character building, Kylo Ren and Luke are phenomenal characters, it has themes of Hero’s not living up to their mythic legacy, and it’s goofy fun (which Star Wars needs to be. I hated self-serious Rogue One)

VIO SCHOOL I also think my opinion on the film is less in sync with the casuals is because I work at a movie theater and I got to see the film alone in an empty theater 2 days before it was released, and I could pick up on it themes and unique storytelling rule-breaking before I knew people were going to lose their minds over hating it. So I had no idea it’d be such a divisive film. IMO the last Jedi might be considered the best Star Wars movie 25 years from now, but it’s too soon for people to realize that

Dude, I’ve had The Hunt on my watchlist for a year. I’m going to have to check that out. I love Mads Mikkelson as the villain in Casino Royale and as Hannibal Lechter on the television show. The only film on your list that I really love is There Will Be Blood. I did enjoy Dogtooth. I thought A Ghost Story was beautifully filmed but I prefer films with more dialogue. I’ve considered watching The Holy Mountain. I don’t mind a slow burn if the premise is really interesting and thought provoking. I love Under the Skin and Arrival. A Clockwork Orange is a great fucking movie but my favorite Kubrick film is definitely Full Metal Jacket. I cannot get into Wes Anderson’s style of film. I’ve seen The Life Aquatic, Grand Budapest Hotel and The Royal Tenenbaums and I did not enjoy either. I’m sure he’s great at what he does it’s just not my style. I’ve never seen a Monty Python movie. There are some PTA movies that I still haven’t seen. I keep meaning to watch Punch Drunk Love and Inherent Vice. The Master was okay. The only Von Trier films that I’ve seen are The House that Jack Built and Anti-Christ and I liked both of them. I’ll have to check out Dogville.
