This is a fantastic video! Thank you so much for making this! I'm also honored that you used some of my video footage, feel free to use as much as you like :D Hjalti is also one of the very few people to have a 1000kg powerlifting total so he was a strong ass man. Great video again, think I have to agree with the placings of the guys. Very hard for me to pick for 1st Magnús og Hafþór though since I know them both. It's sort of like being forced to choose between your parents hahaha

Hjalti Árnason was the first Icelander to total 1,000 kg (back in 1989).

Hafþór is definitely the 1st. He has won more competitions than Magnús Ver (both number wise and percentage wise) and he's also the Strongest man in history.

Wow, thank you for this list. I'll have to google half of them though. There is no doubt about the top 3. Hafþór is definitely the 1st. In my opinion it's a tie for the 2nd place between Jón Páll and Magnús Ver. Hjalti and Stefán Sölvi are legends as well. Iceland for sure is the strongest country on the planet.

Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is 1st. Jón Páll Sigmarsson and Magnús Ver Magnússon are tied for the 2nd in my opinion. A fantastic video Mr. Strongman Historian, I enjoyed! 👍

Phenomenal breakdown of all these strong Vikings! I agree, with Hafthor being number 1. It would've been great to Thor and Jon-Pall face off in their primes! 💪🏻🇮🇸

I'm a Icelander. I was 134 kg. I'm 110 kg right. We had a real summer here last summer and it's Iceland so it's 20 degrees celsus. How are Icelandic strongmen able to perform in such a hot weather. Taking Ice baths in freezing cold weather is not uncommon here.

Magnus Ver Magnusson is the greatest strongman to every come from Iceland not hafthor.
@thestrongmanhistorian3 жыл бұрын
The number 1 was a tough one for me, I went back and forth between them so I can understand where youre coming from. But it the end I went with Hafthor. His throphy case is on par with MVM, his peak was higher and if he didnt choose to retire he would have been dominating even now. Ive got so much respect for Magnus but Hafthor takes this one for me.
@fickalinga3 жыл бұрын
@@thestrongmanhistorian comparing the trophy cases is unfair imo. A lot less comps when MVM was competing and no giant sponsors to help out with travel. So feats is the only real comparison, which puts Hafþór on top
@thestrongmanhistorian3 жыл бұрын
@@fickalinga It wasnt only about the number of competitions and dont get it twisted Magnus competed a lot. Rather their prestige and significance at the time. But what tipped the scales for me was their peak relative to the other competititor and Hafthor is matched by very few in that category.
@fickalinga3 жыл бұрын
@@thestrongmanhistorian I look at his trophy case every day I train, so you don't have to tell me how much MVM competed. But he also competed a lot in powerlifting and that bolsters his trophy case. I'm not putting down Magnús' accomplishments, he's the smartest strongman I've had the pleasure to spend time with, and I've met or competed against most of the Icelandic strongmen. I'd say you even missed the biggest factor, the fact that Magnús didn't train for strongman like Haffi and that Magnús didn't know the events ahead of time. Maggi had to adapt while Haffi could train every event to perfect it. So Haffi may be the strongest strongman, but he's not the best strongman from Iceland
@thestrongmanhistorian3 жыл бұрын
@@fickalinga Im not comparing them strength wise, thats why Magnus not knowing events wasnt a factor for me. No one knew the events beforehand. Just like now everyone can perfect them. Magnus had the edge because he was smart. Hafthor didnt have to be smart because he was just that gifted. Magnus managed to beat everyone and win everything in his time. Hafthor did it against arguably 2 GOATs and in a more competitive era. Strongman is after all about stength and in his peak, Hafthor was untouchable.
