CORRECTION: I mistakenly said that Andrew Stevens played the killer in 10 to Midnight, but it was actually Gene Davis. I’m sure you could tell from the video that I didn’t know the name, and looked it up in the moment. Unfortunately, I zeroed in on the wrong name. My apologies, and thanks to everyone that pointed this out.

When I found out that Runaway Train was a Cannon movie my jaw dropped. It is action, but has no sign of cheese, camp, and it's almost artsy, like 1993's Fugitive or a Michael Mann flick.

Runaway Train was part of that short lived period where Golan and Globus backed either established or up and coming filmmakers and for the most part stayed out of the way as long as the films didn’t go over budget. They were “package” flicks, where theaters had to book them if they wanted to get the new Chuck Norris or the new Bronson. Other good ones from that era are “Barfly” and “That Championship Season.” Any studio besides Cannon puts out those two, and they’d have been award show darlings.

My personal favorite from The Cannon Group is A Cry in the Dark (1988) with Meryl Streep and Sam Neill. It’s based on the true story of Lindy Chamberlain, whose baby was killled by a dingo in Australia and the injustice she and her husband Michael suffered until their ultimate acquittals.

As always what makes this channel so unique and essential is that Daniel goes the extra mile to cover films nobody else on KZbin does or even knows or cares about. In my 20’s in the 1980’s you would have never caught me seeing any Cannon product. I was such a film snob, but all was not lost as now I love seeing all this cheesy crud and it’s not even nostalgia driving it! I think it’s because unlike action movies made nowadays the Cannon balls from the 80’s are not so self-referential, they are just solid action movies without pretension or ass wipes from other movies the directors grew up watching on cable. THESE are those original movies that defined cable! It’s where it all started!

Just started watching your channel and really enjoy the energy you bring! This list included 10 to Midnight - that I thought I remembered as Angel, because of the serial killer. I quite enjoy Angel but it didn't quite match up with what I remembered. Please keep in mind that my first time watching was over 30 years ago when I was around 12 spending my first summer far away from home, living at my aunt and uncle's learning the local culture of a small town with my cousins and that included renting VHS tapes at a small convenience/video rental store - likely called the Red Rooster where I would also try slushies (slurpees) for the first time.

Bloodsport is also a favourite of mine and I just re-watched Lifeforce last week as I hadn't seen it in ages. Runaway Train is also a belter and any of the ninja/martial arts fests they made. That's actually a great list. Kudos for including Dangerously Close, which I think is criminally underrated. Cobra was actually a Warner Bros production, which only has Cannon credited as part of a deal to let Stallone make Cobra before Over The Top, when Cannon had the rights to his next picture after Rambo II and Rocky IV. They had nothing to do with the film's production, although in many ways it does resemble a Cannon film.

Charles Bronson, Riveting script, inspiring acting, The Giggler, mail ordered firepower, Bill S Preston esq, Ed Lauter repeatedly calling Bronson “Dude”, Bronson’s love of Chicken for dinner, punk baiting with a Cadillac, World War 2 machine guns, ice cream and cameras, etc. Best Cannon film!

in 1989 my best friend at school had a huge collection of videos and me and another friend would 'bunk off' school and stay in his house watching them all day. It seems that most of these Cannon videos were in his collection. I guess they were a company making films for 80's kids. That Cobra cover always looked so cool to me. I don't think I saw "Invasion USA" but saw other films, not from Cannon, that were similar like "The Exterminator" and fondly remember them as well. I was 10 when Bloodsport came out - and I remember my friends down the street rented it - and it completely blew our prepubescent minds apart. It was as if somebody cracked our heads opened and put every cool thing we wanted to see in a movie in this VHS tape. By the time they're glueing broken glass to their knuckles, I was on the verge of full black out due to the amount of awesomeness we were seeing. I spent a year legitimately training to do a full split after seeing this movie.

I've seen so many of these movies (not quite all) and own at least 3, Over the Top, Invasion USA, Lifeforce. My grandfather loved movies when I was growing up, so I saw most of these before I hit double digits in age. I also love and own Masters of the Universe. I've been looking for Avenging Force, as I liked that one.

This comment is going to date me. But I hadn't heard the name Michael Dudikoff for decades. And I could hear the sax from "Careless Whispers" when I did. I have not seen any of his movies. But I had a huge crush on him when he was doing the TV show "Cobra". For many years I avoided movies that I thought might be too violent. However, as the years have gone by, for better or for worse, I've toughened up when it comes to bloody violence. Listening to your reviews I think maybe it's time I become familiar with some of my old crush's movies from the '80s.

I agree with your #1. Bloodsport was great! It had its flaws, but I loved all the different fighting styles on display. So much fun.

Fun list! And yes I am one of those who love love loves Masters of the Universe 😂 and not shy about it ! But again we can always agree to disagree cause at least you mentioned American Ninja and Dangerously Close and Cyborg 😁 and you nailed a lot of the prime Cannon flicks too!

Even sans makeup I can see that one of the baddies in Avenging Force is Marc Alaimo, aka Gul Dukat from Star Trek DS9.

Recently discovered your channel and love what you are doing, keep them coming! Haven't seen any of these so plenty added for the watchlist! Except TCM2... I've tried to watch it twice and turned off both times. Love the original way too much.

PRETTY AWESOME LIST! Dennis Hopper was hilarious in Chainsaw 2! That movie had to inspire Rob Zombie! Some random thoughts...Red Scorpion was underrated when you pair it with The Gods must be Crazy. It was an edit away from being a genre classic. And the earlier Ninja films were sooo entertaining! Franco Nero was a badass way before Die Hard 2. You have to see 52 Pickup just because Roy Schider kind of outlines Lance Henricksons' role in Hard Target. But my all-time guilty pleasure is American Ninja 2. That barfight was like a GI Joe cartoon come to life! Rest in Power Steve James! You filled the void left by Woody Strode until Wesley took the torch !

The ending of Runaway Train has to be one of the best every filmed with Voight standing on top of the train leaning into the wind.
