Well, the USA were at war after the USSR collapsed. Maybe not on the scale of the Korean or the Vietnam war, but still at war. The first Gulf war in 1991. The Balkans War in 1994. The Afghanistan war from 2001. And the second Gulf war in 2003. And then the snowballing conflicts that resulted from these. Lybia, Syria, etc...

US military spending is completely out of control. Take aircraft carriers for example, the US has 11 carriers of over 60,000 tons when the only country with more than one in that category is its ally, the UK. China and Russia have ships over 30 years old. The arch nemesis of the US is Russia which has a small economy with a lot of nukes but hardly any capacity for power projection. The military industrial complex is an elaborate system to buy votes and make a select few very rich.

With the US being the arsenal of the West, that budget is more than necessary. And over 50% of that is due to base maintenance and payroll. You and this dumb fuck reacting this have no clue what you’re talking about
@HastDuWasSuchen
@HastDuWasSuchen 4 жыл бұрын
@@kylelerie7325 Except that it's not necessary to be as bloated as it is right now. The "arsenal of the West"-thing is true but there are definitely things the US-military does (and funds) which are doing the exact opposite of creating peace, which is what the US is claiming to aim for. Funding rebel groups which later turn out to be actually really extremist and dangerous (Afghanistan, Syria...) is basically funding your own enemy, which doesn't sound very effective if you ask me. Airstrikes, missiles and drone attacks cost a fortune and are killing civilians throughout the Middle East (even hospitals and a wedding ceremony, just bombed to rubble, nasty shit), which too isn't an effective thing to do when you try to prevent further radicalization and opposition against you. Plus it's just damn expensive if you consider that such cases are actually working against your war effort and are quite tragic. If the US would want more effective peacekeeping in the world they could simply increase funding for UN peacekeeping missions (they have been more successful in peacekeeping than the US-military on their own but many of these missions aren't funded enough to be more effective) and decrease funding for local seemingly US-friendly organizations (which turned out to often lead to more chaos). Also, decades of political scheming in the Middle East isn't a sign of wanting to create peace but rather a sign for putting own interests before peace. These are just things I am aware of but there's certainly more unnecessary spending in the US-military that I'm unaware of. If 50% are for maintenance and stuff like that and there's no waste of money going on in this regard (kind of hard to believe), there's still the question whether the other 50% are being used effectively or not, which they aren't.

Yes, military spending generally speaking does make your military 'better'. So you're wrong in that regard. US spends 3.4% of it's GDP on its military (which is lower than that of Russia, and more than 2x's less than Saudi Arabia), the same military that many of these countries that don't have well established militaries depend on. If we cut the military spending significantly we'd be pulling troops out of allied countries, and putting those countries at greater risk if something were to happen. Russia and their neighbors for instance, Israel and almost everyone around them (Turks hate them), we'd be pulling out of Japan (issues with China), S Korea (issues with China and N Korea), India (Issues with China, N Korea, Palestine, Turks), etc. We should have a strong military, period. Our allies are dependent on our military, perhaps we should be demanding they all pay their fair share toward collective efforts instead of letting it slide because we're a rich country. It's better to have a strong military and not 'need' it, than to need a strong military and not have it. Perhaps you forget how much of our military requires high upkeep costs, you've got a lot of benefits allotted toward actives/vets and their families, how much drilling we do (which costs money, for fuel, and munitions to test and train). You know your country is doing great, when quite a lot of your populous is more into music/arts/theater(film) and advocating for their own disarming (which is the reason they can relax, it's the reason they have their freedoms, and it's the reason their own allies can rest easy.. knowing that US troops are in their country keeping eye, always innovating, and always dominant). This is a list of countries, ranked by their spending (GDP). We're a rich country, don't blame short comings on anything other than poor leadership from local governments (we're a Republic). Texas is doing beautifully, California is shitting the bed as of late (they weren't too bad in the 70's/80's).. hmm, I wonder why.... www.statista.com/statistics/266892/military-expenditure-as-percentage-of-gdp-in-highest-spending-countries/

The UK is not giving aid to india because India needs it. India has a bigger GDP than the UK! Both in PPP and nominal terms. It's paying that money as a symbol of debt for all the wrongs that were committed. Even though India is the world's 5th largest economy, there are still millions who live below the poverty line and that has to do with the colonial massacre of the Indian sub-continent. 2 million Indians served in WW2 alongside British and allied forces but the schools in the west shy away from talking about this. 4 million Indians died due to food shortage in 1946 since Churchill deliberately diverted food supplies from Indians to British forces. This is also not taught in British schools. And what the UK pays to india is actually not even 50% of what india spends on fertiliser subsidies to its farmers. The UK should be paying india way more! Not because India needs it, but because that's what you do when you're sorry!
