That's the great thing about it - there is no right or wrong in throwing, you can follow a few good advices, but in the end, you have to find your throwing style yourself, and in the end, you have to go with the style which leads to be best results and with which you feel most comfortable with, no matter how unorthodox it may be.

That Terry Down guy would manage to get me enraged. I would eventually snap and throw my darts at him or something, or set up another board to the side to practice on at the same time. I guess the only reason he won anything is because his opponents were fighting an inner war and lost all focus. Damn I'd just forfeit the match if I saw his name coming up as my opponent. My goodness, his pace goes beyond any of these weird throws in this video lol.

You forgot your fellow countryman Ceri Morgan . Who unfortunately passed away in 2020 , a very unusual throw but a damn fine player . Capped for Wales 53 time , won the British Masters & Quarter & Semi finals in the World Championship & also played with another Welsh legend the great Leyton Rees. Many , many top darters from the valleys. RIP Ceri Morgan 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Jocky smoked a whole packet of cigarettes and drunk the bar dry before the end of the first leg against Terry Down. Terry Down makes Justin Pipe look like Ricky Evans. One of my friends who is also very good at darts stood with both feet at the oche like Lorraine and we even game him the nickname Lorraine - She is a decent player - I think unique throw of all time not worst should be the title.

I think reason why Petri Korte was throwing like that he wanted to be sure his elbow is on the same position so rather than moving his throwing hand he was moving the hand that was holding the the darts. He put his hands as close as possible where throwing hand made just a very little move and grabbed the dart

For Korte: the advantage of having his left hand up is his throwing arm stays in position for all three darts. Less movement means less variability between throws.

Enjoyed the video! Surprised Corrine Hammond didn't make an appearance actually. Once played against an opponent with similar throw like Terry Down. Remember the first game of 301 still because he started with 180. I was a beginner and never thrown that myself, but I had practiced lot of doubles. He could score really well with that throw, but doubles was huge problem. I could be trailing by a mile and still win. Asked how he aims, he said that he does not :)

I always wondered how Joe Cullen can be so accurate with his throw. It doesn't look crazy but watch carefully, he pulls the dart back to his shoulder somewhere, nowhere near his eye line. How can you possibly aim like that?!
@Straightdarts
@Straightdarts 2 жыл бұрын
He dose it by finding the line he want the dart to travel down using visualisation. He then throws the dart down that line of sight on the throw. When the dart leaves his hand its down the line of the shot. It's takes alot of hand eye coordination apposed to aiming straight down the line and throwing and is generally less consistent. :)

Good list. Let me add add two more: Jelle Klaassen does something rather similar to Bobby George, pulling the dart accross his face to his other side eye, holding it so the dart is to the side of his hand rather than on top - and then has a definitely jerky throw. The other is Joe "rockstar" Cullen. The vast majority of darts players hold the dart so it is in their line of sight: between their eyes and the board. Cullen seems to hold the dart so it never is, but rather right of his head - like you throw a javelin (with a smaller swing of course). It is hard to judge it based on what the cameras show of course, but it definitely seems like the dart never really gets between his eyes and the board before he throws it. I've always found it rather strange. But hey, it works for him, doesn't it? And that's what counts.

Petre thinks symmetry, at the start, if you split him down the middle the two halves would 'mirror' each other, I think that's what 'he's thinking. I suppose the idea is symmetry = balance(it probably is balanced if you 'favour a face on position. Now where's 'Jocky ...go to shool on that grip.

There's plenty of different ways to throw. What matters is a technique that's easy to replicate time after time. A lot of the players in this video will have flashes of brilliance but struggle over the long term. Bobby George was unorthodox but threw the same way every time. Ultimately those that stay at the top have a simple consistent action and are the best examples to try and emulate.

I can only assume that Korte uses his left hand as a sort of measurement gauge. Like he uses his left hand to determine where his right hand should be positioned. But who knows? It really comes down to what feels right for the individual. Not a comment on his throw technique, but this video reminded me of another player from years back. Somehting else that is by no means strange or weird, just interesting how Suljovic holds the darts so they point straight down while Whitlock holds it so it points almost straight up (and we could also add James Wade who holds the darth as close to horizontal as one gets) - goes to show how it doesn't matter at the end of the day how you hold the dart as long as you're comfortable with it ;)

I think you ill find in years to come as the optimum dart throw is discovered the very best players will look more and more alike. And the odd throwers will be compensating for physical shortcoming and won't be competitive. It's a new sport it has a lot of development and big steps or surprises to find in proficiency. And ironically the steps if not found by sporting institutes with technical investment it will come from the avant garde throwers that work on their throws pushing past accepted norms.

@@Wally-H It was the way he twirled the dart to the side just as it reached his face, it looked weird. Very smooth throwing style though. Jocky when he was off and not smooth looked as though he was jumping towards the board or throwing himself over the oche! LOL! That guy with the slo mo throw should have been banned from darts as that would put anyone off their throw!! Imagine a tournament and getting drawn against him? Lose the will to live.

They are all weird but none are weird at the same time ..-best not to over-analyse these things or you will go round the Twist 😆

It is crucial that first and foremost, a player needs to be comfortable. Without that it's never going to be any good. A long time ago I decided that if one can minimize all bodily motion not necessary to throw the dart, it will increase accuracy. This includes lifting the off leg up on the follow-through. This helped me to get a whole lot better after reaching a plateau early on. One thing most people overlook is which "eyed" a person is. For example, I'm left-handed and left-footed. The only thing I'm not predominantly lefty about is my vision. I'm pretty darn right eye dominant. Needless to say, this has created some strange and unique ways in which I do things. As far as basketball goes my left elbow sticks out to the left because I'm lining up with my right eye. It does work however. I've been told by many people that they've never seen someone so accurate beyond the three point line. If you have ever seen Reggie Miller shoot three-pointers that's almost exactly what my shot and release looks like, except the opposite hand. It is also something one has to deal with when shooting firearms. If I don't close or, nearly close my right eye when I'm shooting past 100 meters, I'm way off target. Unfortunately if you close one of your eyes completely your depth perception disappears. I don't mind living in a right-handed world though. It's made me think in unusual ways to compensate for it. I think that some of the strange shooting styles can be chalked up to this phenomenon. This all reminds me of the old Monty Python sketch about the ministry of silly walks.😉

You beat me to it regarding eye dominance. I’m right-handed, and for the longest time I couldn’t understand why my darts kept dragging to the side, no matter how much time I spent lining up beforehand. A few years ago, I looked up darts technique, learned about eye dominance and how to check for it, and suddenly my darts game improved tenfold. The reason why was because I’d discovered that I needed to line my shots up with my left eye as that was the dominant one.

@@JasonAFlintham Yup, your choices are either switch hands (not a good idea) or, squint with your dominant eye (messes with your depth perception) or finally, perhaps turn your head so that both eyes sort of line up with each other, your throwing hand and the board. It's the last one that seems to be the easiest to implement.

Jamie Lewis would have been a great entry as well - amazing how accurate he is despite his rather risqué style.
