I'm 56 and I like classic fragrances because that's what I grew up with. - Kouros - Oh man, that brings back memories of being a college freshman in 1982. The original Aramis was my first fragrance when I was 14 years old in 1977. Aramis had a huge line back then, 40+ products with the Aramis scent DNA such as muscle soak, deodorant, shampoo, everything you could imagine. I also remember Devin by Aramis. I loved it. Have you ever tried it? - BTW, I love your channel. I don't think most people realize all the effort that goes into such a smooth presentation. It's very hard doing such a long video in 1 take. Very impressive. - This is OT, but I too love Dior Homme. I had the original (with the metal stem in the bottle) back in 2009. I would KILL to try the parfum version.

I'm 33 and definitely prefer the Classics. I really like Barbershop Frags. I made a massive list when I started, tried a ton of stuff and every time I go to the mall a lot of stuff seems to be a clone of a clone. A good cheap 80's kind of scent always smells unique. Haven't found two that were redundant yet.

Great list. Aramis Havana is one of my all-time favorite fragrances. The new bottle is very faithful to the original and mostly smells the same, but the vintage blue cone bottle version is better, smoother, richer, longer lasting.

This is a super list. I got into fragrance very recently. I'm 50 and didn't buy many before about two years ago. What this means is that classic fragrances like these are a win-win situation for me. Win because I can appreciate and approach most of them as something new, fresh and exciting. Win also because a few of them that I am familiar with act like nostalgic Pavlovian triggers which whisk me back to where I first smelled them. That's a really pleasant experience at times.

Guerlain Heritage = smooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth It is niche quality with a designer price tag. I hear rumors that older formulations are better, but I honestly do not know how that is even possible, haha. I own the newest formulation (both EDT & EDP) and It blows my mind every time I wear it. I do prefer the EDT, as I feel it is a more balanced fragrance. The patchouli in the EDP is just a bit too dominant to my liking. As long as Guerlain keeps making it, I will always own a bottle. Well deserving of the #1 spot.

Sebastian, you’ve done videos on classics before, but this is outstanding ! You give succinct reviews on classics that everyone should sample, at the least. I’ve commented before that I was a signature scent type of guy, owning or wearing one or two fragrances at a time until last fall. At 55 years old, your reviews have helped me remember classics that I’ve worn or smelled in the past, such as Grey Flannel or Dior Eau Sauvage on this list, and discover new classics for which I’ve gained respect, such as the three Guerlain fragrances on your list - Vetiver, Habit Rouge and Heritage or Azzaro Pour Homme. I love how so many of the classics take you back to time spent with your family and how you include those memories in your reviews. Family is so important and as we get older, and closer to the end than the beginning, we appreciate our family and the time we spent with them more and more. When I wear classic fragrances, I often think of the “good old days”, when we life was simpler and we took the time to build family relationships. If I smell dated when I wear them, I’m fine with that. I’m not a kid anymore. But, I can help younger generations, discover and appreciate the classics. Today, my teenage son was describing a fragrance that he likes to my son-in-law, and talked about it’s sillage. I smiled, because he’s learning from watching your reviews with me and us taking about fragrances. These are the memories he’ll have and associate with fragrances. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pass on a nice collection of fragrances to him someday, to remind him and his children what fragrances smelled like in “the good old days”. Thank you for all you do! Your work is very sincerely appreciated!!

@@ThePerfumeGuy You're welcome, Sebastian! I forgot to mention that I own the EDP versions of Habit Rouge and Heritage. I really like Habit Rouge and have it on right now. I like Heritage too, but find it to have only a moderate silliage and less longevity than I thought it might have. I realize that reformulations have not helped in either of those categories. Also, I grew up in the 70's and began wearing fragrances in the late 70's and early 80's, so I'm used to fragrances that are long lasting with a heave sillage. I noticed that you included the EDT versions of both. I've not had a chance to sample the EDT versions, but I'm going to try them, especially since you ranked Heritage as #1. Please don't forget to review Heritage in the future as you mentioned in this Top 20. Btw, my son and I watched this review last night, and he wants to sample a few of the fragrances you included. Once again, thank you!

Great video. If I really had to nitpick, I'd have to say among fragrances still in production I'd probably say "Bel Ami" by Hermes deserves a place and if I could include the ones that can't be had for love or money I'd put "Macsassar" by Rochas and the original "Nino Cerruti Pour Homme" on there (still have some of the latter in an old bottle!) But again, I say that purely in the spirit of fun of arguing about these kinds of things rather than a real criticism of Sebastian's list, which is all killer no filler.

My "notes browse" brought me here by a funny circuitous route. I was experimenting on Fragrantica with mixes of notes that intrigued me and, after much trial and error, I came across something called Geoffrey Beene's Grey Flannel. Reading about it more at various places I was convinced enough to try it. But just before committing, the thought came to me, has anybody on KZbin reviewed it......? And here I am. And look at that, it was the very first thing you mentioned, as an honorable mention! Almost gave me the chills. Yes, I'm going to try it, blind buy, cautions in mind but so inexpensive, why not. 😊

The Sebastian Jara Drinking Game timestamps: "If that makes sense" appears at: 6:49, 6:56 and 22:31. Comments: (this is going to be long so grab a cup of coffee, unless you're playing the SJ drinkng game. Then grab two cups!) Thanks for the Grey Flannel mention. I also used to love the pouches they came in. Most of the younger guys on the forums and groups don't like it because it's anything but sweet. I always tell them to sprinkle a few drops on a tissue or handkerchief in the morning. Then smell the dry down in the afternoon. The base of Grey Flannel is fantastic. Perfect scent with a suit. Kouros was a beast in the 1980's. I still have about half left of my 1980's bottle. The reformulation of Aramis Havana is kind of weak. I returned one bottle and the 2nd bottle is a skin scent after maybe 90 minutes of light projection at most. An Estee Lauder rep told me it was discontinued in 2015, Do yourself a favor and test Chrome in Macy's. Check the batch code on the bottom of the tester, If it's 2017 or later, you'll be surprised at how weak it has become. I'm surprised you mentioned Aramis 900. With that, New West, Havana and Tuscany, many feel the best of the flankers is Aramis JHL, named after Estee Lauder's husband, Joseph H. Lauder. There's several formulations of Givenchy Gentleman. Since 2000, I think there's been three different bottles. One has a silver cap and there's 2 bottles with black caps - one has a gray label (yours) and the newer one has a black label). I picked up the 100 ml of Versace Dreamer and Versace Man for about $20 a few years ago when Target still sold men's fragrances during their holiday sale. Both great fragrances. Azzaro Pour Homme has been reformulated a number of times. My 2014 bottle is close to the original bit of edt splash I still have left from the '80's but not as smooth or long lasting. The current formulation I smelled in Macy's seemed a bit different. Try to sniff a tester. Once again, it would be interesting to know your bottle dates. Why don't you do as I do? I write the bottle dates, place of purchase and price on every box. You can check all the bottle changes through 2015 here: raidersofthelostscent.blogspot.com/2015/10/azzaroyesterday-and-today-azzaro-pour.html If you like Guerlain Heritage with lavender and patchouli, I'm surprised you're not a Paul Sebastian fan, especially since you share a name! I guess you weren't a fan of several of my older favorites: Lagerfeld Photo Obsession Pierre Cardin Musk and one of my all timers, especially the beaker bottle design - Halston Catalyst. If you ever smell Catalyst, make sure it's the vintage and not the EA Fragrances reformulation.

Great list. I would say it's missing Van Cleef&Arpels Tsar, Cartier Santos, Caron Le 3iemme Homme, Oscar De La Renta Pour Lui, Puig Quorum. All of them are still available today. I'm 41 and love classic scents. I have or had 21 of 24 from your list.

I forgot a bunch of really good Aramis: JHL, Devin, Tuscany, Aramis Aramis. YSL Opium Pour Homme deserves at least a mention too.

Might have to pick those up and do another video haha! :)

A bit late to the party here, but I will let you know anyway Sebastian. First off I am 44 years old. I am pretty sick of all the blue and fresh or even worse the bubblegummy stuff that come out. We all need mass apealing fragrances and I do love a fragrance like L'eau D'Issey but those older fresh fragrances were made with so much more love it seems. I own a few of the ones on your list like Guerlain Vetiver and Egoiste and they are among my favourite fragrances of all. I plan to get Dior Eau Sauvage soon btw.

Great video! One of my top 3 "inexpensive classics" made it, even though it was an honorable mention. Grey Flannel, Polo Green, Drakkar. oh, and Ralph Lauren Safari also.

Consider these fine scents as well Aramis Tuscany, Chanel Sycamore, Halston Z14, Gucci Nobile, Lagerfeld by Karl Lagerfeld, and a recent new one, (not vintage) that I love if your like deep smokey tabacco notes, Aramis Private Collection

I have spoken about all but the Aramis Private Collection on the channel. I enjoy them.

I wished if you put Lapidus, cool water, Fendi life essence and Zino Davidoff. Zino still one of the most sexiest fragrances today.

Zino is so good that is a crime don't talk about it

I'm 40, and just starting in fragrances. I just recently(yesterday) ordered Ungaro III and Aramis 900, after watching one of your other videos. Not too sure what I'm going for in a collection yet. But, maybe classic, classy, florals...

I remember my uncle wearing Azzaro and Lapidus back in the day, he kindly left me the the remaining portion when he visited once. I was the best smelling dude in high school for a while. Hugo Boss #1 and Armani Pour Homme were "borrowed" from my older brother during late teens. Lastly, Allure from chanel is a fantastic scent, a blast from the early noughties. Great review as always, must checkout Heritage sometime. p.s. I managed to secure some gems from dior thanks to your guidance (Eau Sauvage EDP and DHP).

Thanks for this great video and list. I’m age 32, and realize that I need a section in my collection specifically dedicated to classic scents. Surprised you didn’t mention one of the Hermes classics (Bel Ami, Equipage, Rocabar), but other than that, this is a stunning list and collection you have 👍🏾
