The guy would have his students write words into the puzzle for him, and then he would write clues for the words they wrote. Some of the words they used were military codewords (although he wasn't aware of that) they had overheard or picked up from interacting with the soldiers near the school. The result was some pretty coincidental words showing up at interesting times, and leading the British to suspect some espionage was going on. For example: -One day before the Dieppe Raid (August 18, 1942), "Dieppe" was the answer for the clue "French port" -In the months before D-Day, the words "Gold" "Juno" and "Sword" appeared in the crosswords as well (obviously those were codenames for the D-Day beaches), but these were common enough words in crossword puzzles that it was treated as a coincidence -The word "Utah" appeared on May 2, 1944 in the puzzle as the answer for "One of the U.S." -The word "Omaha" appeared on May 22, 1944 as the answer for "Red Indian on the Missouri" -The word "Overlord" (codename of the whole operation) appeared on May 27, 1944 -The word "Mulberry" (Mulberry harbors) appeared on May 30, 1944 -The word "Neptune" (codename of the naval phase of the operation) appeared on June 1, 1944 TL;DR: A guy used a bunch of codewords and names for stuff relating to the D-Day landings in the crossword puzzles he created to the point that the Allies thought he was a spy passing information to the Germans through crossword puzzles.

JWB shot Lincoln in a theater, was caught in a barn; LHO shot Kennedy in a warehouse (barn) and was caught in a theater. Both assassins had three names. Both assassins were killed before they could be brought to trial. Both Presidents were sitting next to their wives; both had members of their party wounded by the assassins. Both Presidents seemed to have premonitions about their deaths (although in Kennedy's case, this is rather vague).

I love the Franz Ferdinand licence plate coincidence, but it's a shame that they didn't explore this event further. You see, the car took a wrong turn down a road named after the Arch Dukes own family. Franz-Joseph Street was named after his uncle and Emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz-Joseph. A royal name for the death of a royal. Also because it was a wrong turn, that means that no-one could have predicted the car would have gone down that road. Making it all the stranger that the car would stall next to a delicatessen. And who should be leaving the delicatessen at that exact moment? Gavrilo Princip, a young Serbian who was a part of the earlier assassination attempt against the Arch Duke. He was in the exact right spot, at the exact right time, to have another attempt. On a road named after his uncle, in a car which predicted the end of a war his death was about to start, Franz Ferdinand was killed by a man who in a million to one chance left a delicatessen right next to him at the exact moment he could not get away. And on top of all this, some historians believe that this day was on the anniversary of an important historical battle which many Serbs and Bosnians found patriotic, and that had the Arch Duke arrived on any other day, they may not have been so insulted as to murder him. It's almost like it was staged.
