I would have to flip Simone and Floor. They definitely deserve to be the top two. I think what would give Floor the edge in my opinion is her range. You pick any genre, she could sing like she belongs there. If you didn’t know she was a rock singer and you heard her singing another type of music, she could fool anyone into believing she belongs in that genre. The best example is her performances on the tv show Beste Zangers. If your first introduction to her was on that show, you would laugh if someone told you she was a lead singer in a metal band.

My TOP 3 in order : 1- Floor Jansen 2- Simone Simons 3- Brittney Slayes // And I also think Sharon den Adel should be lower than 4... she sings most of the time always in the same range of her voice. (I have 4 Within Temptation albums... but among all the female fronted band I listen to... Within Temptation is among the one I like the less (Still like it a lot :P). Still... very nice selection.

And no... no one would laugh because IF they watched the show it was mentioned DAY 1 she was a Metal Singer of international renown but nearly unknown in Netherland. And her Vilja lied was quite "metal-like" :)

Thank you very much for posting this! "Symphonic Metal" is a genre that seems to encompass too much. I prefer the female-fronted bands that can hold a balance of symphony and metal; ever so easily done. I hunt for the sound I want and have to dig through bands that should be in a separate category, but maybe this mixed variety is what makes the genre what it is. But to my point. Your post featured some musicians I didn't know before and you've given me a little taste of the bands they're in--that being your countdown from 20 to 10 or so. Rating your picks for the top 10 is tough because those women are powerhouses. I agree that Floor should be #1 because she can hit stellar heights with her voice, but not with Nightwish. Simone is great but I don't think she has the power Floor has; Simone is often overpowered by the music and the grunting/rough vocals/whatever-you-call it. I'm very pleased you put Serenia in here because those women were great and that band (more than any other) knows how to balance the female lead with the male grunt/gruff/whatever, I should say they knew how to do it because that's another band that's gone astray. Because of your post, I have some bands to hunt down; thanks!

@@phmercier4097 Without getting into any kind of discussion, I'm fully aware that Tarja sings a lot, yes, this merit no one takes from her, but she has a question that the music teachers you want to watch will talk: she has a limitation in its style, which is basically lyrical. Each and every song she sings is in this style. she does it very well, of course, but that's not the case with Floor, which has a more complete technique as it travels from one kind of voice to another, even within the same song. In short, the teachers, not me, say that Floor is more complete without downplaying any vocalist in the world. And I agree with that, just opinion. Everyone has the right to like who they want. But I'll take my opinion, which happens to be the same as singing experts. Sorry if I made myself wrong. I didn't criticize anyone, just said that she has no voice like Floor, based on the fact that she is complete. The analysis was technical, not personal. Hugs to all !!!

My best live experience was still End of an Era in Montreal... but I can't place Tarja above Floor SKILL WISE... Floor is off chart. (Now you could prefer how Tarja's voice sounds, but that doesn't improve her technique).
