Ethan Hunt It's a swerve, if he didn't show it in honorable mentions (but showed SMB1) you would know that The Legend of Zelda is #1 before the reveal. Great video, by the way, Mr. NESComplex. I respectfully disagree with Blaster Master not making the Top 20 and am shocked that SMB1 did not, but this list is rock solid, in my opinion.

You got Bionic Commando AND Mega Man 2 for the same Christmas!? Wow, dude that is truly excellent! I'd probably place Bionic Commando in my top 3. I remember, I got a good report card and that meant a new game. I told Dad I wanted Mega Man 2...I wanted it so very bad and he came home with Bionic Commando instead (Toys 'R Us was sold out of MM2). I was furious like the ungrateful brat that all children are in the moment but I played it anyway, of course. My tune changed REAL fast. I absolutely adore Bionic Commando. I replay it at least once a year to this day. Father knows best, kids.

Solid list, man! Mega Man 2 is my all-time favorite game on any system to this very day. I've played it on both difficulties in every order you can go through the Master Robots and STILL keep coming back. Tight play control, amazing soundtrack, fantastic graphics and the single best weapon in video game history - THE METAL BLADE! Also, great seeing you throw love for Shatter Hand! Criminally unheard of game from the console's last legs. VICE: Project Doom is another one lost to the end of the console's era!

Absolutely the best "Best of NES" list I have ever seen. I have watched a lot to discover new gems to get for my collection. But this list contains a lot of these hidden gems. E.g. never heard of Journey to Silius but I have owned the actual NES Terminator game (which sucks due to its clunky movement controls). Now I know this is the futuristic Terminator-like game to get asap. :)

I remember hearing about The Legend of Zelda in summer school from kids and they couldn't stop talking about it. A year later I got my NES and my mother bought me it along with The Adventure of Link. Hell I could go on but these games are ones I visit at least once a month for a quickie for a quick fix. Except for Zelda because that one is not much of a quickie lol. Zelda is a much more demanded hot chick that needs a bit of overtime. lol Kung Fu is also a great quickie fix. Love your video brother as always! Can't wait to see more! A+++ 10 Stars!

@hektorlinko6 жыл бұрын
Yes Brother...Life Force was the Best. My brother and I used to wake up "before Saturday Morning Cartoons" early in the morning like at 6 am just to play Life Force and punch it out and beat it before 7am and then eat bowls of cereal and watch cartoons, eat more cereal and finish cartoons with wrestling at 10am and then go outside to play and then come back home for lunch, then go outside and play again until supper then eat and get washed up and play more Nintendo again then watch movies with the family in the evening . Then pretend to go to bed and play more Nintendo until our room stunk of dirty socks and boy sweat and filth. That was our weekend as kids. Best times ever! I'm now in my 40's and still find myself in the same situation. Only I'm a grown ass adult hiding in my man cave from the wife and kids only they support my silly hobby. Love this video! A+++
@Harkness784 жыл бұрын
Very good list overall. I totally agree on #1 and 2 and Contra would probably be my #3 with Ninjagaiden being more like 9 or 10. Jackal and Nemo and River City Ransom would have been in my 10-20 somewhere. Biggest disparity is Castlevania 3. I would have had that at like #5 or 4. So much replayability with the branching paths and party member choices, amazing playing/looking/sounding game.

10.) Ducktales - I have beaten and completed this game so its permanently retired. It's just anothing shining example of that winning formula that capcom and disney had when it came to their games. Just a perfect example of addictive gameplay with addictive music to make one awesome experience. 9.) Bionic Commando - A game that I surprisingly have never played before. 8.) Mike Tyson's Punch-out - I played the game briefly but I could never really get far in it. I just really need to sit down and dedicate some time toward it. 7.) Mega Man III - The only mega man game that I ever owned for my nes and even to this day it is my favourite mega man game from the original series of mega man games. I have beaten this game and I have completed this game as well, so it is permanently retired. This game still has my favourite robot master theme from the original series of mega man games. 6.) Super Mario 2 - A game that I have played and beaten but I still need to complete this bad boy. I actually have a lot of fondness for this title even though a lot of people I know consider a dark horse title when it comes to mario games. It may be different from the typical mario formula, but sometimes different is good and it can carve a proper niche for a beloved and timeless video game mascot. 5.) Super Mario Bros. 3 - My favourite mario game of all time and even to this day it is my favourite nes game of all time. Simply a game that every household had and a timeless classic in every sense of the word. I have beaten this game several times, but I haven't completed it as of yet. 4.) Contra - I haven't played the nes version of contra in a very long time, but I'm overdue to give this beloved classic another try so I can beat it plain jane vanilla style and permanently retire it for good. 3.) Ninja Gaiden - I have played this game quite a few times when I was younger, but I haven't been able to beat it but hopefully someday soon. 2.) Mega Man 2 - I don't have as much fondness for this title as much as everybody else but I still recognize its importance to video games and the mega man license. I actually never beaten mega man 2 completely on my own but I'll have to remedy that soon. 1.) The Legend of Zelda - Despite all the times I played this game, I still haven't beaten this game yet. I just never really dedicated time to beating this title, but I hope to change that soon. An excellent list as always. No really big surprises except for bionic commando since you'll see all these games within a persons top 20 list for nes games all depending on the person and they're own personal preference.

And that alone my friend is why I clicked your channel to see the best respectful coverage of link to the past. Thank you for this.👍✌

I was recommended this video and loved the Top 10, going back to watch 20-11 right now! The NES is probably my favorite library - it has so many great games that are so near perfect. I agree with the list too. Contra, Mega Man 2, and LoZ are some of my all time favorite games. Keep it up man! Subbed.

Totally agree tose 10 are absolutely great games. In many fans' Top10 lists it would be just a matter of ordering. I would still add Crystalis, Battle of Olympus, Castlevania: Dracula's Curse and Metroid in the my Top10 ;)
@NESComplex6 жыл бұрын
There are simply too many wonderful games for the NES! I can’t disagree Crystalis and Battle of Olympus should’ve been in the honorable mentions too

Thats a pretty perfect top 4. The Guardian Legend, perhaps for a 5th?

Bionic Commando! I still remember that game and being constantly delighted by a near death when I grappled a cliff at the last moment. Ahh. Memories... I received SMB3 as a get well gift after a tonsillectomy 😏 I even got a stuffed raccoon I named Tanooki who turned 28 this year. Megaman 2 and those jams! Your top twenty and honorable mentions are fantastic. I’m going to try a few of your recommendations that I missed three decades ago. Quality content as always, Mr. Complex!

Thank you! If you like most of the list then you’ll likely enjoy the other games I mentioned too. I hope you do! Too many hours of fun yet to be discovered

Can't argue with this conclusion to your Top Ten my friend. Personally, Ninja Gaiden / Punch-Out / SMB3 are my top 3 in that order, mainly because I didn't play Mega Man 2 or Legend of Zelda as a kid so I don't have that added nostalgia bonus. That honorable mention music, jammin!

Ducktales was one of those I got to rent from the grocery store on Fridays if I was lucky, Rescue Rangers was good too. I appreciate you not placing the cliche's where they're expected. But then again they aren't cliche's by accident.

When I saw Zelda in the honorable mentions, I was near ready to flip out lololol. Nicely done.

lol... i was afraid it was too obvious so putting it casually among the honorable mentions i thought would help as a decoy... glad it worked

Where's Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde? Smh That Zelda bit through me off so hard. That was so funny. I've been collecting a lot of older games recently and so this was super helpful. I haven't heard of half of these.

Great list. Since yesterday was a big fight night... i love punchout. Sometimes on fightnights when there are fights i dont care for between those i want to see, i pull out my nes classic and play it. It always gets me in the mood to watch fights, and watching fights always gets me in the mood for this game. Hell, sometimes when playing the modern ufc games i find myself wanting to play it instead. I did not grow up with the nes, but was always interested in it and had played super punchout as a kid. The nes game is so much better.

Holy #$@& dude. We could have been brothers growing up together. Your experience with the NES is absolutely identical to mine. The matrix must have glitched again. By the way, congratulations on the additional 1000 subscriber's you've earned since your return. More to come, I gaurantee it.

(part 4) 16. Maniac Mansion - Maniac Mansion was one of my earliest entries into the "point and click" rabbit hole I went down as a kid who had rich cousins with computers and all these Sierra point and click adventures. I would visit them on Christmas, and different religious events like Baptisms and Confirmations... and they would show me their newest acquisitions of computer adventure greatness. Kings Quest, Quest for Glory, Space Quest and other RPG's like Bards Tale and Ultima. What made this game special was it was a Lucas Arts game... and I was a Star Wars fanatic, and knowing that George Lucas may have tangentially been a part of this games creation... I had to be a part of that. The game had so much humor and personality. Millions of ways it seemed to finish it, and was just a delight to get lost in. Never owned this one either. 17. Tetris - Who doesn't love Tetris? While my first experience with Tetris was on the Gameboy, this was the ONLY game I played with my mom... and my mom was better at it than me!? My mom never was a gamer, but something about this game drew her in, and when I found out she could consistently get to 120 lines I felt like I was in a simulation or a bad dream. She's still excellent at Tetris. 18 . Guerrilla War - This game is hands down the best run and gun on the NES. I had so much fun playing this at my buddy Harry's and using the continue code to get all the way through it... and its a FREAKING LONG GAME. So much fun, and it feels like its a game many people missed by being overshadowed by Ikari Warriors and Commando. 19. Goonies II - Yeah... this was a strange one. I actually owned this one! I got it by giving a kid on the bus my lunch money till it amounted to I think $8... but he let me keep it till I got to that amount. I liked the movie Goonies, what kid that age didn't, but to look at the game, it looked very childish. I mean, you are Mikey, and you thwart gangsters... with a Yoyo? Anyway... it was a new game, I was starved for a new game... and any time you could get a game you didn't own, without having to give up one you did was always a win. This game is such an overlooked "Metroidvania" (cough... RygarVania) that nobody really pays any attention to. I did finish this game, and I don't know how. I guess I just banged my head against the wall till I completed it. I don't remember it getting much coverage in Nintendo Power and the only kid I knew that had it was willing to trade it off for $8 over the course of a couple weeks. He either got stuck with it in a bad trade, or picked it as his "new game" and due to a lack of reviews was disappointed when he gave it a shot. 20. Faxanadu - I really didn't want to pick more than one game from a franchise because I felt like I wouldn't be giving credit where credit was due... but Faxanadu was a game I enjoyed so much more than Zelda II (at the time... I've grown to like Zelda II more as an adult). The graphics were better, it was more moody... and I wasn't jaded by the fact that I wanted Zelda II to be more like Legend of Zelda. I rented this a bunch of times, and eventually found a kid at Church that had it, and completed it while visiting his house. A common theme of my top 20 was... "I didn't own this as a kid". I really didn't have much growing up. Lost my dad when I was 5, and my mom could barely make ends meet because she spent what little money she had keeping us out of the public school system that was available to us living in the Ghetto and what a wise woman she is. Nintendo was my escape from not going outside and getting mugged by the kids that wandered the streets that would steal your sneakers off your feet. I mostly played other kids games, and even though my mom was married to someone who actually had money for a time, that gravy train didn't last long... and I was back to renting and borrowing games. I am grateful it was this way, because playing other kids games with them helped me bond with them and create unforgettable memories I can now share with you... and anyone else bored enough to read all of these posts.
