Another little known rts gem that often gets overlooked: Acheron. It's flawed, but actual has a working and fascinating temporal war system. It's worth checking out just for the mind bending factor. Also worth checking out and often available for cheap, Gray Goo.

Since there are some old and less known RTS on this list, I also suggest 'Ancient Wars: Sparta Definitive Edition' and 'Ancient Wars: Medieval Crusades', they are remasters of 2006~2008 RTS games that are kind obscure. But they offer some sort of customization for your units, like choosing the weapon type and such (and looting swords from fallen enemies too)

I have many of those, but picked up a couple I didn't know about (WK: Battles and Original War) - so thanks for the list. For anyone that doesn't have them... AoE2, Rise of Nations and C&C Remastered are ridiculously good for the price - that is 4 of the all time greatest RTS games for under £15 / $20 (yes, 4 games because C&C includes Red Alert too).

Check out Syrian Warfare. Good modern RTS set in Syria. You play it from the Russian perspective but it’s a solid modern war game. Same devs who did dark fate which is also good.

Homeworld Remastered is still so buggy that it's almost unplayable. Basic problems have not been patched to this day and the game has been out for 10 years. Don't touch it!
