Shoot em up (SHMUP) are a genre of video games that have been observed for all generations, but there was a moment in time that was the golden age for this genre. Arcades machines, video consoles and other platforms were plagued with these games, so it was normal that there were multiple developers constantly making video games of this style.
The Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, had a huge catalog, in this video we will see the 20 best Shoot em up of this 16-bit desktop game console.

Good list, it’s tough to argue the Top 5 but I would at least say the Top 3 should have included TF 3.

Thank you! A top Genesis shmups list that ends correctly. Thunderforce 4 is THE best shmup of the 16 bit era imo. Top 3 all time. Finally Musha not no. 1. So overrated cause of price.

Fantástico vídeo, felicidades! Gran calidad en la edición y muy buen ranking, aunque he extrañado no ver en él juegos como Battlemania 2, y sobre todo, Zero Wing y Hellfire. Un juego que me encanta también es Thunder Force 2, creo que mi Top3 lo ocuparían Gley Lancer, Empire of Steel y TFIV. He echado un ojo por encima al canal y tiene muy buena pinta, lo iré descubriendo más tranquilamente.

Buen top aunque añadiría Battle Mania Daiginjou en detrimento de algún otro o del propio Trouble Shooter. No obstante, es difícil meter en un top 20 todo lo que tiene mega drive en shoot em ups sin dejarse alguno bueno fuera. También son grandes shmup que podrían haber estado (o no, según gustos) Zero Wing, Undeadline, Fire Shark, Dangerous Seed o Arrow Flash entre otros.

I have all of these and they were all great choices! What's funny is it seems that not one video of Whip Rush I have ever come across shows it being played properly lol. If people knew that you can actually punch outward toward enemies with the options that you can rotate into position around you, I think the game would start to get a lot more attention. You can even throw one behind an enemy to keep bouncing on it and damaging it while you take care of another enemy.

Must have been a hard list to iron down. The list could have been expanded to 25 or even 30. -Thunder Force 2 was one of my first exposure to the Genesis selection, and obviously it's sequels made the list (even claiming the top spot with Thunder Force 4/Lightening Force) -Granada doesn't exactly fit (as it is more free roaming about levels and you drive a tank) but it was a very fun shoot em up variant, -Ranger X is more run and gun than shoot em up, but was also a very fun, and impressive 16 bit game. -Target Earth/ Assault Suit Leynos, is another game that isn't exactly a shoot em up but contains elements there of, it is a tough game at the beginning as your Mech has limited abilities, weaponry, armor etc... but it gets better as you progress.

I noticed MUSHA and Thunderforce 4 were running a touch slow. I think these games run better in PAL. It’s to do with the slower refresh speed allowing more bytes through the bus per scanline and frame.

Hay un shoot em up bastante interesante para la Megadrive llamado Hellfire. Me gusta bastante aunque es muy difícil. Lo tengo en cartucho japonés no sé si salió para occidente.

Una lista tremenda, el Biohazard Battle siempre me pareció una precuela espiritual del Panzer Dragoon. Echo de menos títulos como Panorama Cotton, Zero Wing o Xenon 2. El hecho de que falten títulos en un Top 20 muestra lo bien surtida que estuvo la Mega Drive en el género de los shooters.
