Literally all mainstream music this year sounded the same. It had no soul and no heart. It had a droning and emptiness. Every song had a trap beat and synth line. So glad that you mentioned in the beginning that songs aren't fun anymore. It's the sad truth, I understand people want to go for that hipster vibe and the "Look at me teens I'm relatable" and it worked for a while with people like Lorde, Halsey (depending on your opinion of her), Melanie Martinez and Troye Sivan but now it's not even unique anymore. Being unique and different is now the 'norm' of music. I miss fun pop, sure it was cheesy but it never hurts to have a four minute song that you can just bop around to whilst cooking dinner or getting ready for work or something. At least this year wasn't all about the 'EDM' pop though

I'd say it's more about being "moody" (just look at the dark instrumentation in songs like Panda) which is fine if they could pull it off, but they can't. They seem to think having a moody sound is enough to distract from the lazy songwriting and sterile production pop music tends to have. So in a way, it's progressed the way mainstream pop music always seems to progress; different outfit, same substance.

kobra kid I can respect Aoki for experimenting with his music. I've always been a fan of Steve and he experiments with each project he puts out. Wonderland was him trying to find a his style. NF1 was going for a futuristic club vibe. NF2 was going for a darker and more festival-style electro house and big room. His newest project, NF3, is trying out some festival trap, and upbeat tropical house styles to see if aoki can diversify his productions. His Bored To Death remix is a monster and if he's gonna reinvent his favorite punk-rock tracks for his edm fans, Welcome To The Black Parade was a disappointment

Man, I HATE Lost Boy. The first time I heard it on a pop station getting so much attention I just got pissed off. She litterally just took a boring piano track and melody and recited THE MOST UNORIGINAL LYRICS OF THE YEAR. And the worst part is that there she has said there is no deeper meaning. Its just the story of Peter Pan. No drug refferences or afterlife parallels. It just makes me so mad that she's so praised for such an unoriginal song.
