Legend of Dragoon, my first ever played RPG. I've been told that's an odd first playthrough but we rented it and well...the rest is history. Sorry 3 comments is a lot but you made a list of my fav gameplay!

God, I Love every one of Falcom's games. Finished with Ys series and Tokyo Xanadu, currently going through trails starting from sky FC, recently finished Zero, going to start azure.

Respect your list, its a tough one to make, especially with Persona and Trails being so high (I agree btw)..... but not seeing FF3/6 on a top 25 list of all time is a shocker. Any reason why it wasn't included? Again, I respect your opinion, just curious. Nice channel btw!

hmm i personally think ff6 might be strong contender. But i feel like in terms of overall aspect like gameplay, presentation etc, ffix and ff8 delivered it better. But i do feel like ff6 is also a masterpiece

I don't know how many have played it, but I just want to spread the word about two games being Legend of Legaia 1 and 2. You have 4 attacks and you can use a number of combinations to performs moves called arts and was one of the best ps1 and ps2 games for me

It's good for the 1st 10hours or so. Once you get enough points for action, you can combo loop your actions. I'm getting a special skill every action I do so every encounter becomes a chore when I'm wasting 30secs just for 1 action from a character. I fell asleep so many times during encounters. It's so tiring.

Yes, I love the trails series I became a nihon falcom fan after discovering it. I would add Radiant historia, grandia 1, Atelier series, and blue reflection second light for me since they're one of the enjoyable turn based rpg I've experienced.

P5R is probably my no. 1 turn base jrpg of all time(currently). Or maybe until Persona 6. Also huge respect for putting Trails at the top spot. I love Coldsteel.

Lost Odyssey is an Awesome really interesting story/game. Kaim's A thousand years of dreams, I think they are called? - will nearly bring a tear to your eye, some are that well done. hmm is that avail on steam? I Love your channel, the notification bell has been set to ring for a while now. My question now is am I going to have to buy an older TV and consoles I've long since given away to nieces and nephews to play some of these gems WHAT have I done to myself.

Good list I would like to make a shoutout to the Etrian Odyssey series if you want a dungeon crawler RPG, and the original 3 ds games: Etrian Odyssey, Etrian Odyssey 2 Heroes of High Lagaard, and Etrian Odyssey 2, Etrian Odyssey 3 the Drowned City will be available on Switch and PC on June 1st. The Artlier Ryza series and good comfy rpg to me and finally Radiant Historia who might I daresay did the time travel mechanic better than Chrono Trigger.

Final Fantasy VI and Dragon Quest VIII are glaring ommisions Final Fantasy V or Bravely Default are also a must SMTIV is far better than III SuperMario RPG's timed press mechanic is also a highlight/innovation of Turn-Based RPGs Did not see Lufia or Breath of Fire mentioned anywhere

I played all of them and I have to say it's a very solid list. Not many people talk about ressonance of fate, and despise the difficult in mastering the battle system, it's an amazing game (Just don't have ending since it was supposed to have a sequel u.u) I would trade: Suikoden 1 for 5. Pokemon for SMT: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2. Chained Echoes for Mana Khemia 1 & 2. And squeeze some Breath of Fire and Wild Arms somewhere. xD

Ressonance of fate is an underrated game. At the beginning it has a somewhat simple story being your team a team of bounty hunters but as you advance you discover a mysterious secret that is linked to the soul of the people. The optional special dungeon is one of the biggest challenges you can have in a game since a simple character placement error can lead to the immediate death of the entire group.

Chrono Cross OST is just as powerful as Ys. When I first started both games, I felt the strong need to do nothing while listening to the music for a while. I just didn't want to interrupt it until the first loop ended.

Haha my advice is try trails in the sky FC until finished. See the ending. If you're not hooked, then this series probably not for you. But so far, people that i met after finishing the first game are literally marathon the series afterwards lol.

I finished Cold Steel 3 about four weeks ago, and I had played that right after I finished Azure. After two straight trails games, i needed a break, so I played FUGA 2 and Chained Echoes. I'm almost done with Chained Echoes right now, and plan to play Cold Steel 4 next. Trails games are great, but they're also a lot, I do recommend breaks in between. I picked up Sky FC in 2020 during the lockdown. I had a lot of money and free time on my hands for the first time in my life, and I decided to get back into JRPGs. I played Sky FC and have gradually worked my way through the first 8 games in the series in the last 3 years. Don't feel you need to binge all the games at once, it's okay to go at your own pace. If you can't stand the cliffhanger a game ends on, it's okay to look up spoilers to find out how the story turned out. Whatever you need to do, the important thing is that you start.

Shin Megami franchise is a wild ride. I played through one of the earliest games with some friends of mine, None of us can remember the actual number (name) it was though. Yes also given away...Ohhh the library of treasures including comics (Wolverines first time in Huik ECT) I should be a wealthy retired man😭Comics especially and they were all in hard plastic safety pkgs. It actually makes me queezy to think about them. Hopefully all have enriched other lives.

When i saw trails at number one i almost cried. The games are amazing and i love the characters and how everything connects. It deserves so much more love and attention i feel it anytime i play a gme and i cant wait for reverie to come out cause i know am putting in as much hours as i can into the game.

This is a very nice list and I'm happy to see that some of my absolute favorite games of all time are included here, especially SMT III: Nocturne and SMT V. Have you played SMT IV on the 3DS? That one is more character-driven than the other mainline SMT games and the combat is engaging and excellent. Hopefully Atlus will eventually port it to PC and modern consoles so more people can have the opportunity to play it.

Trails has completely and totally ruined JRPGs for me, after playing trails, everything else just seems "meh". All the story beats in other JRPGs that don't go anywhere, the characters that don't serve any real purpose, the combat systems that are over-stuffed an unintuitive, the musical score that's just grating on the ears. After trails, I notice all of those things so much more than I did before, because trails does them so well.

The one defining quality of trails is that it's not for everyone, or even for most people, that's why 12 total games have barely cracked 7 million global units sold put together. The small number of people who love it really love it; but most people will pass on it.

Grandia 3 should’ve made the list for sure. I think it’d beat out a lot of these games. That being said, the second half of the game does drop in quality due to mediocre writing but the battle system throughout is amazing. The first half is also amazing. It’s too bad they couldn’t take more time developing the plot better in the second half.

Good list, I'll be honest I really don't get the hype with the legend of heroes. The pacing of the story is slow, The environment feels stale, The story is completely average, I want nothing more than to love it, As there is so many to keep me busy, But I just can't get into it

I don't think the pacing is that slow, it's just that there are so many contexts that needs to be delivered in the game. It's a heavy narrative experience. I recommend playing the first game until you see the ending, because the game is a slow burn. But in my experience, after witnessing Trails in the sky FC ending.. I started to religiously playing the series. My friends who are also playing this series also felt the same way.

never interested with persona series, because their mc never talk. in my opinion characterization should takes priority in jrpg unlike western rpg who prefer world building over characterization. but hey, in the end i play fgo too, their character also didnt talk, they just give us bunch of choice lol. maybe i just have soft spot with nasu, nasu writing is cool

Have been a fan of the JRPG genre since my childhood. The 2000's was the last decade with so many quality games. Since the 2010's the quantity of quality games have started to drop. Even worse, nowadays game companies are turning JRPG games into button mashing hack-n-slash-ish games. Worrisome trend for classic JRPG fans.

Persona 5 Royal is probably top 3 game i've played in my life (and it's a LOT of games!!). Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Final Fantasy X are also up there.
