Oh MAN! You should get a BIG award of some kind for this! I am blown away and have learned more about Dutch Prog Rock in the last 25 mins than I knew about in my entire life. And I agree, Focus has earned #1. Good job at putunxicating all those Dutch names. Cheers, mate, I'm in!

I came to this video to see where Ayreon landed, and while I'd have put them and Arjen's other projects collectively at number one, 5th is still a very respectable spot! And The Human Equation is an excellent choice for a spotlight, it's in my shortlist for favorite albums ever, and if you made me pick a favorite that's probably what I'd say nine times out of ten. Such a great record, it's got metal, it's got lighter moments, it's got a great story and really great guest appearances. And speaking of which, the revolving door of guests is a great way to get into a lot of different other prog acts quickly. Finding Seventh Wonder and Toehider both from the multiple guest appearances by Tommy Karevik and Mike Mills was really great. As an aside, since I'm commenting more on your channel lately, and to establish a baseline for where I'm coming at prog from... Admittedly I think my main difference in approach to yours could be summed up as focusing less on classic prog or modern stuff in that style, though I do still like it a pretty good bit and definitely want to hear more of it, and more on a Rush->Dream Theater->other modern heavy prog and prog metal route. Maybe it's just a consequence of being younger, getting into the genre with Rush around 2006 or so when I was just becoming a teenager, maybe it's the 70s-80s hard rock and metal my parents liked, with Rush and to a lesser degree Queensryche being the gateway bands, maybe it's just a matter of subjective preferences. And while I agree on not liking death growl vocals that much, I only really dislike them when it becomes more common, and they can be absolutely fine as an accent to a short section of a song, so there's still plenty of heavier prog out there that doesn't exceed that admittedly rather fuzzy limit I have. Sorry for the ramble but I figure it can't hurt. In any case, thanks for the recommendations, I'll be sure to add some from all your videos to my ever growing list of stuff to explore!

I'm sure I can speak for millions when I say 'Oooh, I had forgotten they were Dutch!' (Flamborough Head, Trion, Supersister) Once again, I bow to your superior knowledge. I do love the term 'prog adjacent' which can mean anything you want it to! Golden Earring do indeed deserve a mention as at least 30 minutes of the 2 million that they've recorded nod in the direction of prog.

The Gathering!..many consider Mandylion sort of their signature record. I would hardly claim to know them highly well, but I do enjoy that 1 and How To Measure a Planet. And then their 2012 album "Disclosure" which didn't have Anneke, but their new singer is still pretty good. Lemur Voice and Textures would be my other 2 go-to's from The Netherlands. I do enjoy some Focus like most Prog fans. Curious, is the Best of Prog in Country [A] series going to eventually include Best of Prog in US State [A]?..might be another part to this cool series.

Hi... Can anyone here help me remember a European prog somewhat pop band that reminds me a bit of Aphrodite's Child? My best guess is that they were either Dutch, Greek or possibly Italian. I can only recall one song that had lyrics something like "lady power, we all bow down to you". I found their music to be superior to their lyrics, and the vocals were very well intentioned, but a bit strained. The era would have to be 1969 to '74. Thanks for any suggestions!
