I thought of you this weekend... I was in Quebec City at the Terra Incognita Festival, it was really too great... you would have really enjoyed it! We saw lots of extraordinary bands including: Anekdoten, The Lost Vision of the Chandoo Priest, Moon Letters, Karcius, Quel Che Disse Il Tuono and finally, the highlight of the shows: La Maschera di Cera! Man, freaking awesome list. My second favourite band in the world besides Yes is Le Orme. I own every single album they've released. RPI is the symbol of the romantic in progressive rock. Really love this serie of episodes, very enlightening and inspirational indeed! One strong factor with prog is its open endedness, picking up influences from domestic traditions; like here in Sweden a lot of folk music going into the mix, in Japan I'm sure a lot of those eastern flavors, in Italy of course the operatic tradition, and so on. Would love the next episode to be about France.

Very interesting! I'm glad you put "La coscienza di Zeno" on your list. They are fantastic. Another extraordinary Italian neo-prog band, also from Genoa, is "Il Tempio delle Clessidre", do you know them? In their first album, the singer was Stefano Galifi from "Museo Rosenbach".

I've been living in Italy for over year now and I love the 70' scene. I found a handful of original presses but damn it's so hard picking in over here. Even at record shows they want an arm and a leg. Cheers, great information video!

Great List! Have you heard Opus Avantra? They were a RIO band from Italy, one of my favorites! Also I would have included the zeuhl band Universal Totem Orchestra and the band Devil Doll!!

Very interesting video, yip italian prog rock was/is still great and PFM is one of my favorite prog band too. French bands were not left aside with groups like Ange or Magma or Ergo Sum (their album Mexico is incredible) or the Belgian prog rock band Machiavel

I’d love to see you do world prog for Spain. A lot of the Spanish bands were influenced by the Italian bands, and each area of Spain had its own sound coming out. There’s Basque prog bands like Itoiz and Andalusian bands like Mezquita, for example.

Oh heck ya! Conqueror is one of my favourite modern Italian prog bands!! Such a killer band, Simona Rigano’s gorgeous vocals are a huge highlight for me. Absolutely, “Storie fuori dal tempo” is a must! The 30 minute epic Morgana is my fave, just incredible! Their follow up “74 Giorni” is also a banger!! Didn’t they just come out with a new album recently, actually? Haven’t listened to it yet. Gotta get on that! Haha

Goblin in the Top 5. Not surprised at all. 😁 Everything they've done is an absolute masterpiece. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Roller is quintessential 70s Prog. The perfect balance of guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums. And I'll be in Pittsburgh in a few weeks celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Dawn Of The Dead and blasting plenty of Goblin!

Area is not progressive rock. It's very difficult to place Area in any specific musical context. For years they have tried but it is impossible. However, they are not part of progressive rock.

The question? No they never were. Putting them in the prog is just confusing. In the US they have this concept of putting everything into progressive rock. Area didn't play rock and they weren't a progressive band. They've always said it too...
