I have seen six western from 1976/79 Breakheart pass God's gun the last hard men keama and I agree with it being tied with my two favourites The shooist and outlaw josey Wales.

John Wayne died in 1979 and it seems kind of fitting to let the old legend have the final fade out. But if I was forced to choose between the two I would go for Josey Wales. But it's a close call.

@@Top10Charts3978 yes the legend did die in 79 and he did go out with one of his best westerns which was fitting for his last one. outlaw Josey Wales is the better film I agree.

Both really good movies and so different it’s tough to compare. Whichever should be #1 or #2 I think we can agree that both are way better than all the others in the list. For the golfers out there - in the same timeframe - it’s like Nicklaus, Watson and the rest.

Agreed. If it wasn't for the top two it would have been a pretty average chart made up of comedy westerns, modern westerns, and Marlon Brando and Franco Nero at the top.

I have seen 4 top westerns from 1976-1979. None of them are favourites. I have seen The shootist, Breakheart Pass, Buffalo Bill and the Indians and The Frisco Kid. Favourite posters and stills are from The Electric Horseman, Buffalo Bill and the Indians, The White Buffalo, The Frisco Kid, Eagle's Wing, and God's Gun.

Hi Flora, and we've come to the end of the 70s. Your tally gets lower as we get more modern. I'll get back to the classics eventually. Your tally 4, I've seen 10. My favorites are - Breakheart Pass, The White Buffalo, The Last Hard Men, The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Shootist. Others I've seen are - Cactus Jack, The Frisco Kid, From Noon Till Three, Butch & Sundance and The Missouri Breaks. Thanks again for commenting, always appreciated. Some favorite movies from this time period. I have enjoyed The White Buffalo and Break Heart Pass but really liked Outlaw Josey Wales and The Shootist which I believe was John Wayne's last film also great acting from legend Lauren Bacall.

Those are my favorites too. The White Buffalo is a guilty pleasure, Charles Bronson as Wild Bill Hickock versus a rampaging giant buffalo, it's a monster movie! :)

I’m aware there are higher rated westerns and I am a JW fan, Shootist simply is not as good a movie, most reviews for both I see rate Josey Wales 3 to 6 tenths higher then the shootist and I tend to agree. Just my opinion

Shootist is a really good western but not a chance it’s as good as Josey Wales.

Hi there, I'm sure there are John Wayne fans who feel the same way about Outlaw Josey Wales. It's a no-win situation, both films are revered by Western fans. To put things in perspective both American films were trounced in average ratings score by an Italian western filmed in Spain a decade earlier.
