Toledo is the only city in Europe that preserves its medieval cobblestones intact in some streets, being able to walk on stones that have been there for more than 1,000 years. It's one of the few cities in the world that has its entire historic center declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. And it also has a good and excellently preserved walls, and the cathedral is one of the largest and most beautiful in Europe. Toledo is also known as "The Imperial City", since it was the capital where King Carlos I resided (Holy Roman Emperor Karl V for Germans), and was the Capital of the Spanish empire till King Felipe II moved it to Madrid in 1568. Greetings froms Toledo, Spain.

That's some super fascinating history. That's crazy that its streets still have the medieval cobblestones from so long ago! Thanks for sharing that :)

Medieval cobblestone roads you find in many places in Austria and Germany. The whole town of Hall in Tirol, Austria for instance has only cobblestone roads inside the old city walls. Same goes for many East German towns, which in the time after World War II simply lacked the money to replace their cobblestone roads with tarmac, and today, they value the fact that they still have their medieval road network intact.

Monschau is just a few km away, you can say the entrance to the Eifel region. Really cute, especially in winter, when we hopefully have christmas markets again. But Germany is so big and has do much to offer (Nordsee, Ostfriesland, Ostsee, Lüneburger Heide, Sächsische Schweiz, Schwarzwald...so many great cities like Weimar, Köln, Berlin, München, Hamburg and so, so many more...)

The video is in not particular order. He doesn't say which place is his favourite. I love Mt Saint Michel, I´ve been twice, it is beautiful, but much of its beauty comes from the scenic part of it (the mount isolated in high tide, now not so much), but, outside the scenic part I have seen in France many beautiful and more historically interesting medieval towns (also in other countries of Europe). Well, the whole of Europe is full of beautiful towns, villages and cities, so it is impossible to choose one :)

Thank you for not mentioning Urbino, Italy. I have been there dozens of times and hope to keep the tourists away!
@RyanShirley3 жыл бұрын
Of course! I haven't even heard of it before, sounds magical.

So you just ruined it yourself ? LOL

@@kitsiewr Almost no one will see this. The New York Times had an article about Urbino, in their travel section, including a front page photo, perhaps 10 years ago, and they wondered if it would become the new Tuscany. Didn't happen. Won't happen now.....

Avila near Madrid is also a very well preserved walled city. St Malo, while quite smaller also has impressive walls

Marvelous ! Fantastic Photography and Great Destinations. I particularly love your Picks for Eastern Europe, which would provide me with some guidance for my future travelling plans ( fingers crossed 😀), as I haven't been any of them. However, I think 25 is far from enough, because Europe is very rich in culture heritage. For example, You have left the medieval City Ghent in Belgium out. In my personal opinion, Ghent is a city that will indeed bring you right back to the bygone eras... and make you falling in love with the brilliance of those Ancient Architects.

Thanks so much Helena! I haven’t been to Ghent but maybe I’ll visit this summer! Hope we can both travel soon 😁

"Sensationnel! Ausgezeichnet! Geweldig!" Ryan Shirley, you have captured the magic of these glorious places in your intelligent, informative, mesmerising, and unforgettable video. Thank you! 'A+' (Yes, I was a teacher (35 years!), and I have the good fortune to live in wonderful Middelburg.)
@RyanShirley3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Marcel for your kind words. That's awesome you were a teacher. Just looked up Middelburg and looks like such a cool place! I'll try to visit this summer.

@@RyanShirley Goedemorgen Ryan. Thank you for your response. Visiting Middelburg is well worth your while. In 1600, Middelburg was the second city of the Netherlands. Profiting from a flourishing commerce, it became a city of majestic, impressive medieval architecture. On 17 May 1940, heavy fighting broke out between the French and Germans, and the ensuing firestorm ravaged the city centre. Hundreds of unique houses and buildings disappeared. Following that tragic moment, Middelburgers rebuilt and restored many of the buildings. Today, the town centre continues to tantalise the senses with its charming, inviting ambiance. Having returned in retirement to the fatherland in March 2019, I now live a life of utter bliss. No longer having a car, I feel liberated. I walk or cycle everywhere, and I have the impression... of living in paradise!
