I believe Soto is going to the Yankees. I feel like that lineage & history, the ball park (much more hitter friendly) is a a good fit. Cohen factor is bringing that price up. The kid is probably thinking I can win here, get paid maybe not the most $ but a boatload to where his great grandkids are taken care of. Even with the richest owner honestly being used beautifully by boras & his mouthpiece, being willing to go much higher, what’s 725 million to 650 million. The Yankees have their starting rotation in place. They will need bullpen arms & a 1B & upgrade wherever else they can, but there’s a bit more certainty. The Mets payroll including arbitration eligible players is expected to be 170 million for 2025. The Cohen tax is 297 million & you have to stay under it or every dollar spent over it doubles, draft picks, international pool $ is much more significant than some might think. So, the Mets have 127 million for 3 SP (1 of the 3 Aces), 2 High caliber Bullpen arms as we see that’s the difference of winning & losing in the season & in the short series. DH or 3B, 1B & the 300 relievers on minor league & major major league contracts to fill up the bullpen. Vientos defense will be exposed especially if you move him to 1B where he just can’t scoop like Pete & so many plays & games will be decided around the bag or some short term options at 1B. I bleed blood & orange, but these double digit contracts make my ulcer grow. I think you bring back Pete & it’s going to be 6 or 7 closer to 200-220. You don’t look at the position but the run production for Alonso. It’s not freeman he’s going up against it’s the sluggers. 7/210 an even 30, let’s say. 20 towards Burnes or Fried (my preference which changes on a day to day basis…lol) or Snell. You add 50 million or more & you can’t fill these holes. Even without Pete or one of those #1 pitchers it’s going to be very difficult. Players cost has skyrocketed & the Mets need some really good players in several of these positions. The calculus only changes if Cohen is willing to blow past that last tax threshold, imho.
