Miley’s 2010-2011 bun era was going ape shit crazy on tumblr. She had the most iconic and talked about VMA performance in 2013 with hits like wrecking ball, we cant stop, 23, feeling myself etc and changed the whole landscape of pop music. She released a free album on soundcloud that was psychedelic rock which to this day, some artists have been trying to do something similar. She went back to her country roots with Malibu in 2017 which was a hit. She had nothing breaks like a heart with mark ronson which has over a billion streams. Her plastic hearts era in 2020 (which is soooo underrated) got viral performances (heart of glass,zombie) and included midnight sky, prisoner, angels like you (1 billion streams on spotify) and made sooo many artists try and do rock. And in 2023 flowers was the moment. It was EVERYWHERE. Even my parents know and love the song. And then in 2024 she became a disney legend, brits award winner, a grammy winner. Also had the most searched female performance of the year with her grammy’s performance that was EVERYWHERE. Her impact is so much more than people give her credit for. And she will always be relevant. If anything, she should be way higher on the list. She is Miley Fucking Cyrus. Can’t wait to see what she does next.

Britney's career is far from short 😭 From 1998-2008 there was no artist bigger or more influential than her and from then on she remained as one of the top female artists until 2013. After that her residency and tours continued to influence huge artists like gaga, adele etc., so if you only go by musical commercial success her career was still 15 years (1998-2013) which is longer than Ariana's career so far (11 years)

I could nitpick this list all day but here's my broadstrokes: -Billie should take 1D's spot on the list proper. She's been popular for just as long as 1D was together (2019-2024 [not to mention Ocean Eyes was even earlier] vs 2011-2016) and Billie clearly has the edge in music quality and influence, and she at least ties in popularity. There's no reason to have her beneath 1D -Abel should be like 10 spots higher, what were they thinking with that one? -Miley should be a little lower but not off the list -The Usher placement is great IMO, just barely outside the Top 10 is perfect for him, though I'd probably swap him and Em -I'd argue for Adele above Ariana -Drake should be #6, Britney and Gaga match him influence-wise and, although he has plenty of great songs, his falloff quality-wise has been crazy this decade, leading me to prioritize Britney's impact and Gaga's quality over his chart performance -Since basically every genre under the sun is here, I feel like Coldplay could slot nicely into the HMs or like #25

She is a marketing whiz and knows how to take advantage of young, immature fans who are the only ones willing to buy 5 different physical copies of the same album for a bonus song or exclusive merch. Her music hasn’t grown as she has and it’s still the same immature date… breakup… drag your ex formula that’s worked for her all these years. The singing used to be terrible and she struggled to stay on key. To her credit she took singing lessons and now sounds better (insane to be mid career and need them but w/e). Taylor is more popular because of two reasons… one, she is 10 years younger than beyonce and young artists typically outsell older ones. And two… she takes advantage of her fans by forcing them to buy additional albums for exclusive songs and merch. We don’t know where Taylor will be in 10 years but I doubt the same breakup album formula will work coming from a 43 year old compared to a 33 year old. There are already comments of this formula getting old. Taylor makes music for the sole purpose of selling the most records. Beyonce doesn’t prioritize that. Instead of looking at the trend and making an album that will hit all of the popular and best selling sounds she’s branching out and challenging herself, and still being successful. Regardless, the list was based on critical acclaim, music videos, live performances, and cultural and industry influence. It wasn’t just a list of the top selling artists in order. By that criteria beyonce has to take the crown. Taylor sells records but she could barely sing on key for most of her career. She took singing lessons mid career (which is shocking considering she was a singer) and can now sing at an average level. But she struggles in performances and her choreo is still uninspiring and needs work. Her music videos are meh and although she is influential sales wise, she doesn’t really offer anything groundbreaking or creative in the sense that she’s pioneering new sounds or concepts. Her sales are good enough to put her high on this list, but greatness isn’t solely defined by sales.

Taylor’s sole purpose in making music is to sell as many records as possible while beyonce is 43 making music that has grown as she has and still making number one albums and singles. Perhaps Taylor is still doing that 10 years from now when she’s 43 but it’s not a given as it’s very hard to do. I think sales factored into this list but beyonce is one of the highest selling artists ever and this is a list for the entire 21st century, so it’s not like you can go by who is hotter right now and use that to make this list.
