3:17 just saying... natural minor scales (modes in general) don't contain leading tones. This is why they sound more ambiguous. so to introduce a leading tone (in case of A harmonic minor is G#) people came up with the harmonic minor scale. Thanks to G# you can now build a dominant chord (E maj or Edom7) that resolves to the A min. For example (BDF) -> (G#BE) -> (ACE) (Bmin - Emaj - Amin) or (ii-V-i)

@@BoundtoDivideyeah leading tones are a half step below the "home base" aka tonic of a scale. For example B is the leading tone of C major. In case of a A natural minor a half step below the "tonic" A is G#. The G# makes the scale pretty from a harmonical pov. hence the name harmonic minor. But also without a leading tone there's no real home base. Why NATURAL minor scales sound a bit "floaty" their v-i doesn't resolve as strong as a V-I of a major scale. ps: If you want to dig deeper check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2TSoGdrq9WEjJY It starts a bit slow but by far the best introduction to modes I could find on youtube. That's where I learned this shit 😅

Your point about the half-step movement when writing in a major key is super helpful, it's been a struggle for me to get those emotions when writing in a more poppy key. Thanks Jules!

Those videos are really nice. Also that you touch on the sound design as well - not just the melodies. Thank you!

Hi, nice video. The 7th degree is called leading tone in a major scale. In a minor scale it is called subtonic. Don't know if it makes any difference in function though as I have only just started learning it myself.
