We hiked to the Chalet from Logan's pass, spent the night, hiked out on the Loop trail and caught the shuttle in 2019. We are retired and have a "few" years on us lol. We did not have it in us to continue up to the glacier overlook. The weather was threatening too which discouraged us even more. Thank you for the view !
@MidlifeDetour4 жыл бұрын
Jim - You did it the RIGHT way! If I realized we could have stayed at the Chalet I would have jumped on that. I can't imagine what a time you had resting up and enjoying that scenery into the evening. I am not sure I would climb to the glacier overlook again without the shuttle system running. Once we took the hill up to the overlook the hike back to Logans Pass became a bit of a challenge. We have reservations for the East side this year (hopefully it is open) and I am thinking the hike to the glacier will likely be a bit less of a challenge. Thanks for watching!

Wow that's a lot of peeps. What great hikes. Um that one ledge was a bit narrow. Not sure I'd walked that. Good thing you guys took plenty of water. I like the boardwalk trail. 17.5 miles. That's awesome. We did 20 miles once. I about died. I almost couldn't make it back. I was tired and my knees basically crapped out on me. It took me a while to go back to doing any type of hike. Now I pretty much just don't. Sad really. I did enjoy it when we used to do it. We were going to go to Glacier this year, but since the east entrance was closed, we changed our plans. We just wanted to drive through. Pretty glad we changed our plans. I was told recently that we probably wouldn't be able to drive the road with our camper attached. We're not sure how we'll deal with that when we do decide to go. We never really think about the restrictions too much since our camper is only 10 foot. We'll figure something out, I'm sure.
@MidlifeDetour4 жыл бұрын
It was our first time to Glacier and we quickly learned how to navigate the crowds...GET THERE FIRST! ;) We really didn't think we'd drink that much water, we even THOUGHT we didn't need the bigger packs! Our knees were on the verge of giving out! After that hike we were ready for a break...well, Ryan was but I am more than ready to do it again! We saw a few campers that made it up and back down to Logans pass at the top of the road to the sun. I know there are restrictions and our dually was pretty WIDE FOR SOME OF THE OVERHANGS! Hopefully next summer the entire park will be open! Thats a small size camper so I can see how you wouldn't think much about the size! :O -SARAH

I'm going in a few weeks staying in Whitefish the West Side. The Sun Road is closed at Logan Pass so can't drive through the whole park or do the Highline. Being the Sun Road is closed what is the best hikes or drives (if any) to do on the West Entrance?
@MidlifeDetour7 ай бұрын
Unfortunately this time of year makes hikes rough due to plows, road closures and trail closures but the opportunity for scenery is still amazing! We made the trip in June one year specifically to ride the bikes up Going To The Sun - amazing! Take a bike or rent one and make the ride as it was unbelievable and we couldn’t make it all the way up due to avalanche. Right now it’s open for bike traffic up to Logan. I would make the trip again just for the ride and still on the bucket list since we didn’t get to the best part. instagram.com/reel/CewfkScgLU8/?igsh=YXAyc21nbm9sMmxq

@@MidlifeDetourdo they have motorized bikes I can rent to use for going to the Sun road for the parts that are closed that you rented a bike for to get to? I'm pretty out of shape I could do a hike and make it but pedaling very far uphill I'm not sure I'd make it.

We have E bikes we carry with us and for sure makes that climb a breeze. There is several places to rent E bikes on the west side - I know that the North American RV Park had a large bike rental place in front of it. It is located just a few miles from the west entrance.

Hey Chris - we were there in August and September of 2020. I don't know for sure if the road to the sun (road to Logan's Pass) will be open for vehicle traffic by June 21st. If the road up is open I think I saw that they don't open the Highline until sometime in July. You can either contact the park or join the Facebook group "Friends of Glacier National Park". That group has 106k members and is a wealth of information and full of dedicated Glacier folk! We were scheduled to be there the first week of June to ride our bikes up the road before it opened to vehicle traffic however we are working through issues with our rig. Good luck and Thanks for watching!
