TOPS should be a crowbar but the choice of steel and heat treat is just dumb. 1095 is crap. Laminated steel is crap because they all do forge bonds, not forge welds. Because of that they debond under pressure and the knife becomes crap. A break reveals a lot. How and under how much force it breaks will reveal a good or bad heat treat. Extreme abuse is an excellent lesson as it reveals weaknesses.

EDIT: Joe X tested the 1075. The answer (from DDDYLN on Joe X's Ontario SP10 KZbin comments) is that Ontario Knife company explained the 1075 was better for what the knife is supposed to do. Does anyone have a 1095 SP10? What do you think of it?
@kennethkrieb3018

I have an Ontario SP10 that I purchased about 5 years ago. My son has one that he purchased last year. I THINK (according to Ontarios website), that the SP10 that I own is 1095 steel and my son’s is 1075. If I’m wrong, and anyone out there knows any additional information on Ontario’s steel change, please chime in. As far as our experience with the knives go, we have found them to be essentially IDENTICAL. My SP10 has been sharpened 2 more times than my sons. My sons has only been sharpened once. They behave identically on sharpening stones. They both ‘touch up’ the same with strops and ceramic rods. They are both equally tough. Lots of chopping and batoning on both. They behave pretty much identical and I don’t think anyone would notice. The BIGGEST thing to take away from everything I just texted, regardless of what steel was used, is BOTH HAVE AWESOME heat treatments and are VERY durable. Hope that helps

Have a look at old army manuals edited in the mid 1800s, especially in German or French, when they had blade masters in Solingen, Klingenthal and Saint-Étienne. Sabers and bayonets were tested very hard at the end of their forging, pretty close to the final test in Forged in Fire, just a bit less destructive: the bladesmith cut different materials, bent the blade to check the heat treating then hit hard wood at full strength many times. If the blade failed, it was dismissed or reforged. If the blade passed the test, the brand and the official markings were added and the blade was sold or sent to a regiment as a brand new weapon. The Japanese did the same with katanas. When people relied on a blade to save their life, the craftsmen excelled at making efficient tools, not just selling hyped movie props. Nowaday, you cut a piece of wood, many "uber-space-age-tactical-super-saian-indestructible" (aka clownish) brands will void your warranty. Not because it was gross abuse. Because their blades are crap. It's the same when a knife fails early at your destruction tests. You are showing the true nature of a knife. Take an old bayonet from the 19th century or WWI, you'll have a virtually indestructible knife that cuts trees and slice meat like a knife. The French Chassepot was made to clear bushes, hit other blades and cut like a razor. The German bayonet M1898/05 is a pure survival knife. These blades were forged by masters, with pure steel and a perfect heat treating. Today it's the same, however there are far less masters. Many many sellers. And some great makers or companies, that still makes great knives, whatever the steel: the heat treating matters, everything else is just bullshit.

No idea about the Bayonets, but about the sabres: There is a book about austro hungarian blades from 1848-1918 , and it has a short chapter about exactely these tests and the test apparati (not explaining the apparatus exactely, but there's a drawing... And if you buy these now antiques, some of them have a stamp with the word "Eisenhauer". Many english speakers think that's a manufacturer. But it meant that they already cut an iron nail (no idea of the diameter) with the sabreblade and it had no damage) at the manufacturer and the stamp was a sort of extra quality sign some of them put onto the blade before delivery to the tests.

Totally agree with you. Although generally I typically have had good results in knives made from 1095 which I think all the Becker knives are made from. Nothing out of the ordinary but generally when ever I have tested knives from 1095 they can go a ways before failing. They are not the toughest but definetly tougher than 50% of steels out there. They have out performed steels like A2, O1, 52100, W2, and every kind of stainless steel, too many to list here, with the exception of AUS 8. Something about that steel that puts it on par with mid carbon steels like 1060, even 1050 in terms of toughness. Not sure how, but I can't deny its one tough steel. Had few Almar knives made from AUS 8, and they didn't disappoint. And at times 1095 seemed to perform even better than 5160. And everyone thinks 5160 is some type of mystical steel impervious to everything. Its not, and breaks with the best of them. But what really shocked me was Tops Operator 7. Cause 1070 is no pushover. Its a tough steel approaching 1060, 1050 steels which are used for swords. But they definetly screwed up the heat treatment. They should have given it a uniform spring temper instead of differential temper. They made the spine way to soft, so it dents, deform, and impacts easily. It also bends, however the edge is to hard. So you end up with a knife that has a soft spine that bends much further than the hard edge can keep up with. Thys spine bends, edge tries to keep up but can't cause its too hard and fractures, then all you have is the whole blade being held by the spine. One good whack and the whole knife goes. Instead they should have given it a uniform spring temper on the spine and edge. Then the whole blade would have flexed together quite a bit, and when pushed past that could have even bend a bit before finally breaking. But yea Tops was the most disappointing blade I saw you break. I expected so much more from it. Especially from a blade thicker than 1/4 inch at the spine. If you are open to suggestions test Shrade one piece knife, it has a hollow handle but its machined out of one solid billett of steel, so the blade and handle is one piece. Its also made from 1070. But tempered uniformly. Would love to see how that compares. And they are not expensive maybe about $80 US.

Because alot of people like myself purchase things for our survival bags and in a survival situation you never know how you have to use your knife to save your life. Therefore to see some knives survive during your tests gives us more confident to depend on them with our lives. What are your thoughts on the Surviveknifes gso 5.1 magnacut? Hi Joe, I have been waiting for this vid. I totally agree with you, being your neighbor in Slovenia I have hard time finding good knives here. Although Survival lily and the DBK guys produced a great knifes they are out of my budget. I have a few questions and suggestions, I know that Cold Steels Triad lock is the strongest the 2nd they say is Axis lock, I did not catch you doing axis lock yet. Also RUI produces some bad ass blades at reasonable prices but I do not know if they are good since most of their steel is 8crMov, can you check one out. Also witharmour have reasonable priced blades they use 420HC or 440C. Fox from Italy produces some good stuff, I got a cheap fixed blade from fox the one with the para cord handle that thing is tough, just put a bike rubber handle over the para cord to absorb the shock while be-toning. I have 2 cheaper than dirt knives one kukri and the other one a Bowie, Tac called it a rattle due to the guard rattling both are tough as hell which just shows you that cheap is not always junk. Love my SR1 Lite bought it after seeing your vid. Keep up the good work.

The following content is translated by Google. Hi, I am a fan from China, there are some fans in China who like your videos and some businesses even use your videos as product ads. TOPS has almost no imitations in China. The way to judge the imitations is the price, although there are many imitations in China too, they don't sell them as the real thing. We also often test knives, although not as rigorous as your test. TOPS heat treatment is very unstable, there are often problems, FÄLLKNIVEN's knife brand premium is serious, very uneconomical, if it is outdoor use I recommend Cold Steel, low price and stable quality, although the company was acquired after the new product price is not satisfactory, but the quality is still reliable. Can you test the Cold Steel Mini Leatherneck afterwards, this knife is lacking in testing on the internet. I hope you have more and more fans.

I did some abusive testing lately with my TOPS Black Rhino like hitting a concrete bloc very hard with the spine, batoning through a piece of iron and trying to break the tip and it survived all of this. I think it really depends on the construction and the heat treat. But considering the price, all their knives should be reliable and visibly they are not. Hope they will improve this. Same thing with Becker, my BK18 survived some abuse and the tip didn't snap by the way.

In Europe prices of TOPS knives have risen quite a bit, a year or two ago some TOPS knives were even ~50-80e cheaper. Regardless of price, I’m honestly not sure why we should expect 1095 blades to not snap and break after being smashed repeatedly against bricks, metal rods, and torqued on while buried 3 inches into logs. In the case of the Silent Hero, it makes sense to me that it would fail during your second abuse test after it was already weakened by the 1st. That said, the design of a knife blade’s shape also makes a difference in how resilient it will be to abuse, just as the heat treat will. For these kinds of abuse tests, try the TOPS Missile Strike, Joe! It’s build like a torpedo so it has a lot of mass running down the center of the blade, so of like a convex (although the edge itself is not convex). I think it stands a good chance of holding up better than any TOPS knife you have tried so far, as it’s actually purposefully designed for these sorts of scenarios.

@@joex yeahhhhhhh, I’m kind of doubting they’re likely to send you one to destroy against bricks, just to hear you talk 💩 about their blades for breaking after abusing them in precisely all the ways that they advise against doing, Lol. I’m just saying that it’s hard to rag on them as a company when you haven’t used the one blade they’ve designed specifically for this very kind of urban survival/combat use. The others you’ve broken are excellent at their intended uses, meaning, they weren’t designed with the qualities necessary to hold up against intentional breakage. If you’re teaching the internet anything it’s that it’s not too hard to destroy blade shapes/lengths, blade stocks, and edge grinds designed for every purpose except as an apocalyptic crowbar. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey Joe, As I've said, and as you certainly know, the cost of a knife does not necessarily indicate its quality. But regarding Chinese copies in particular: There are two questions.... how different are they from the originals? And how to they perform compared to the originals? In my experience, some of the copies are indistinguishable from the originals in almost every way. For example, I have two Cold Steel folders which appear to be identical. The ONLY difference I could find is that the "S" in "S35vn" on the fake knife is capitalized, and not so on the real Cold Steel. As for quality of manufacturing, they seem to be the same. While I don't test knives like you do, I have seen comparisons between the fake and legitimate model of this kniife and the Chinese copy held up very well. While a performance difference might be revealed with the right testing, sometimes, SOMETIMES, the copy is good enough. And a lot cheaper. I'm not endorsing Chinese copies. Buy the originals when you can afford to. But the fact is that the ChiComs are capable of making some very good equipment. I know this from experience. But I still won't knowingly buy a fake knife. But otherwise, cheap is not always bad, or even worse. Do you know any good Albanian jokes ?

The Tops Operator Seven was my biggest disappointment. I bought a couple as this was the exact design I was looking for. Recurve blade with solid crossgaurd. To bad they machined the fuller instead of doing it appropriately or simply not doing one at all causing a huge weak point. Without that it may have been a very different result. That's the crap you get for trying to make it look cooler without a real purpose and ceeating a huge stress point. I would have bought it without the fuller which would have made me keep it since it probably wouldn't have broke so easy. Freaking pissed.

I have one too and Joe X ruined it for me. Not to worry though, I also have an ESEE-5 with an OD green Micarta handle and thanks to Joe X, I have better information to use in prioritizing my knife collection. I have two sets of knives that I would take, if I had to leave all others. Each set has a large knife, a folder capable of taking sever abuse and a premium slicer. Outside of that is the Leatherman Charge XT, which in my opinion after 12 years of using it in the field for electrical is the single best multi-tool ever made. I never leave the house without it. But if I ever have to leave my house in a dire state of exigency, I like to know exactly what is going with me. I would potentially be leaving a behind a knife collection worth thousands, but the ones that count the most go with me. Sadly, the TOPS Operator 07, as cool as they made it look, did not make the cut.
