The Cold Steel with the 3v blade was an excellent example of the importance of proper heat treatment. 3V normally has a very high impact resistance but if the person who does the heat treatment goes way above the austenitic temperature before quenching it will increase the grain size and produce a much more brittle product. Stress relieving (tempering) and lowering the hardness won't help either in this case because it won't decrease the grain size.

Maybe the HT was botched. They also advertised their CPM3V at 60 or 61 HRC, which is good for edge retention and average abuse, however it weakens the toughness of CPM-3V (really good around 58 HRC). In the end, their 3V knives are not better than their old AUS8 japanese blades or their San Mai knives. I am still curious about the first batch of Warcraft tantos. This knife was quite durable, it seemed aimed at toughness more than edge durability. I've had both in hand, and the Tanto X seemed harder. I think the HT was a bit softer on the original Warcraft Tanto, maybe I'm wrong... Could be great to test one "a la Joe X" (and a shame to destroy the knife if it was properly HT).

Thanks for all of your hard work & painful results. Your testing just proves that with all of the alloys & hardening techniques, there is still no knife that is indestructible. This Video illustrate a few points very well! -"Knives have a Direction for Striking hard objects!": When hitting the edge on the stone/steel Bar knives rarely break, beeing hit from the back breaks them quite often. -"Horizontal stress is the Killer!" : Basically no matter what Knife, once He sticks it in the stump and leans on it, the knife is done. -"Cutting performance ruins Durability." every time i know the knife he is testing cuts very well and precice, it breaks Instantly. Thats what cutting optimized edges give you! -"Even modern Stainless Super Steel is not as Tougth as Old High Carbon." The "Microstructure" is just too different! So i think, if you want to build a JoeX Survivor knife, it should be at least 5mm Thick, of a High Carbon steel (1085), not harder than 55Hrc, with a short and thick doube edge (Think Gladius), And no longer than 20cm/8" to limit leverage! Shame i am no bladesmith :(

The last point is totaly stupide. It's like asking to screw with hand to avoid messing up the screw. With same logic we could say that unsharpened knives are better because their edge won't get any less sharp. Knife's size has to be chosen according to what you need it for. Not toughness. It wouldn't make sens. If you need that much leverage/strength, and the big one breaks, then, for the same task with a smaller one, you would have to apply even more strength,, and it would probably break too.

Sure, right tool for the job and all that. But the tools are only good if you have them during an emergency. My halligans tool sits in my quad, but I’m on my bicycle 99% of the time. I had to gain entry into our local bar- the pilot left his wallet in there. My knife pried it right open, no damage. I tested my custom knife right out of the box, chopped thru a steel 55 gallon drum. That checked the tip and edge. I told the maker I would. And that if I had to bust open a drum for boat inspection, cut thru a house to save a life , etc. and if all I had was the knife he made and I damaged/broke it, he would replace it. That knife lives on my hip. I have jogged with it- mile + 1/2, worked out with it, mountain climbers, sit-ups, food preparation, etc. Your gear/kit/kitchen sink is only good if you have it on you. I paid less than you think-$1200. But , that is WAY more than the brokies who watch this channel would fork over for their EDC. Their EDC consists of three folders ( folders 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣), a 4” prybar, micro light, and a challenge coin. ANY "good" steel blade will break under THOSE conditions. The only knife that will not break when struck against rock and steel, is a BUTTER KNIFE! Because it is made from soft (mild), steel with no carbon content, so it will bend instead of breaking. The desirable quality of 'good knives', is that they hold an edge and not roll over. For that, you need a combination of certain alloys (chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, etc.), carbon and heat treatments. A straight razor will shave the hair off your face, but you can break the blade easily. This demonstration of yours proves NOTHING!

Sorry Ron, but you need watch his other videos of knives that did survive or survived much longer. The truth is that companies like Mora and Glock figured out how to heat treat their blades to make them not only cut well but to be nearly indestructible. All at a low price. The Terava knives from Varusteleka in Finland are also awesome and affordably priced. So are many of Cold Steel's blades and machetes. I don't blame all the knife companies for this though. Many of them fell prey to idiots over the last 10 years who screamed "edge retention!" for survival knives. I say "idiots" because they were all urban/suburban basement dwellers who only wanted edge retention because they were too scared to learn how to sharpen their own knives. Men 50 years ago would have laughed their butts off at these lame and overly soft Poppin' Fresh Doughboys. But things are going full circle and men are becoming men again and they are learning to sharpen their blades and want knives that will truly last for their hard earned money.

Well yeah Im plenty happy with my S35VN, as we can see S35VN holds up very well (check the recon 1 series) although mine is a Code 4 the Tanto tip gives it extra strength also Joes Code 4 sadly is a Lemon....it chipped out way to fast. How I know? I took my knife out and thought never its that chippy turned out mine didn't chip. Heat Treatment is of utmost importance, if the HT is shit you can have whatever super steel you have and it will get outperformed by plain VG10.

While i do like your content joe, i think it would be better to have several categories of stress test. For example, a batoning wood test, a chopping into larger tree limbs and brush test, basically more tests that would actually reflect how useful a given blade is for what i would actually use it for. I never bend a knife in wood, or bang it on concrete, so while they are somewhat helpful, they dont really tell me what i need to know.

If the Knife is given the JoeX approval then you know it’s made right. Some Knives break after one hit… What if you’re out surviving you drop a knife onto a rock and it breaks. You’re Fucked. Joe X knives show they could put up with hard abuse, not that you will stab a car door, but you know it will hold up to normal use. Thanks Joe X !!

I use vintage file knives. Cheap & quick to make. Tough too. I was gonna treat myself to a new fancy esse knife priced in round £250. I don't think I'll bother. Re Schrade frontier knives. I bought 2 frontiers in 2016 when I lived offgrid for over a year. These knives were used like hammers, hatchets & spades during that time. They were used for everything from fine work to chopping 4/5 inch logs, to digging fire pits and used as pegs to moor a 30ft riverboat. I never once had a chip or breakage. I had to regularly buff out burrs but no chipped edges. I still have these knives in great used condition. Schrade quality and control must have tanked in last few years cos I was surprised at how quick that frontier folded on joe.

I will never understand why so many companies use 1095 in their big "survival" knives. It is nowhere near as tough as 5160, doesn't have more abrasive edge retention at similar hardness, and rusts just as easily. And a lot of the prices for these things are rather high. Don't get it!
@joex Жыл бұрын
i don't know either!!! some 1095 are still good, some are shit!

1095 is regarded as something holy by old school guys. They're all fanbois of beckers and esees.
