I have 1 decent tree. It's not very big and it sprouted a few baby figs but they never ripened. Then all the leaves fell off but it is fairly full of leaves now. Looks great. Thank you for the content you put out! It is greatly appreciated!!

I have your GE Neri and its looking healthy and nice. Also have a Brown Turkey which had a large branch come down in Idalia, so now have 8 more Brown Turkeys. Can never have too many figs!

I’ve found in my 7b Virginia climate, it’s best to prune my figs late winter/early Spring, after the danger of a killing freeze has passed. I usually get some tip die off…

I planted two Chicago Hardy trees last fall.. November 2022 and they have done very well. Both are 4-5' tall and have a ton of small fruit. And, as you said they probably won't rippen this year, so I'll prune heavily & expected more production next year! Thanks for the video!

What zone are you in please? I am in zone 6a in Ohio. I just planted a Chicago Hardy in a pot this year. I don't think it will survive outside in the winter but not sure. So trying to find out what other people up north have done with them.

​@margaret2222 I'm in 6b in Indiana and have Chicago cold hardy as well, but they die back to the ground every year and come back so turn out more of a bush than a tree. They ripen so late in the year up here, sometimes frost comes and there are still green ones on the plants when the frost hits. I also have a verns brown turkey but its only started recently producing a whoping 3 fruit😂

@@pinkyfromhaughtfarms6550 Thanks. Do you mean the leaves all fall off or the branches fall off to the ground in the fall? Mine are in pots and I am pretty sure I am going to have to move them into the garage to keep the roots from freezing.

@margaret2222 they lose the leaves then the wood dies back and we trim them around January. New growth comes back every year and this year they got up to about 12 feet, are super prolific because they aren't single trunk and have a ton of new growth. But that's just how we do it here. They can handle being planted out, and the cold winters here. We do mulch ours thick and I did take cuttings to put a few in pots to bring inside.

Timely video, Thank You. We have been on the fence as to when and how and pruning our two fig trees. They are not doing all that well so something must be done. When you go to prune your fig orchard do you plan on doing a video of it?

I had to prune all of mine down to the ground because of ambrosia beetles in the spring. Most are about Eight feet tall again. There are figs but not sure if many will ripen before frost.

I Planted two Chicago Hardy Fig trees in pots last spring. They grew but not much. I plan to move them into the garage for the winter and hope to put them in the ground in the spring. What type of care do they need during the winter? Will they go dormant? What are the light and watering needs of a dormant fig tree in a container? I live in South New Jersey zone 7a

If it's dormant with no leaves, I'd just make sure the soil didn't get too dry.

How do you keep birds and other critters off the figs?? It’s my 4th year after planting and I got 1 fig off my 3 trees in the first harvest of this year. Help!

It's tough. We have enough trees to share with the birds. But if you only have one fig tree, that's much more difficult. Our dogs and cats definitely help some.

I have a turkey fig, it’s around 20 yr old. Around 8-9 yrs ago it quit bearing fruit. Do u have any idea why it quit producing?

That can happen with older trees, especially if they don't get pruned. They'll stop producing much new growth if you don't prune them, and that's where the figs develop.

It might have a small opening, but it's not near as open as Brown Turkey.

I bought a fig a couple years ago from Lowe's. The tag said it was a Bears Black. I've been able to propagate 4 more from it that are only about 2 o 3 feet tall and one already has fruit. I don't know a thing about figs so I'm not even sure this is a good variety, but it was the only one they had. Is this a good one? We are in middle Georgia so we do pull them under our deck to over winter. I was so glad they made it through last winter's Christmas freeze! (Although our outdoor spigot and line into the basement did not!)

I've heard of a variety called "Beer's Black." That's probably the one you got. Never tried a fig from it though.

I have 3 young fig trees, all about 2 years old and never got figs from them. In Washington State and clay soil. After planting, there has not been much growth. There are emitters on all of them and I fertilized them initially. I am not sure why these figs are not growing...

Try fertilizing them. They respond well to it.

Good information. I bought a turkey fig that a man had for years in a pot that is a standard 3-4’ tall with 3 top branches. Planted in the ground, if I want more branching lower down do cut it off severely? Or do I let it sucker at the base? Or should I just let it be tall like that. Seems like I would get less fruit if I don’t cut it off. But I did t want to stress it since I just planted it this spring.

Of the ones we have, Malta Black is probably the best tasting IMO. It's not the fastest-growing or most productive, but best-tasting.
