The “mental struggles” really got to me in this comment, running has helped me overcome my anxiety/depression, I could barely run 5 minutes now I’m doing 5k everyday don stop, it’s more of a mental clarity rather than exercise. But beneficial in the end.

@@JuanMartinez-ty5xm That's awesome, and absolutely what running is all about! The mental struggles I was referring to involve body image and eating enough. Running still provides the escape and benefits it always has for me, I just have some other stuff tied in I need to work on...

I'm 220 pounds with a wide frame at 5'11 and I have always put in the same amount of effort into cardio as I do lifting heavy.Running isn't easy for me but building a frame without an engine doesn't make sense to me.I have never felt that my cardio took away from gains.I feel much more explosive with my weight training and also able to take less breaks in between sets when I stay up on my cardio.

FANTASTIC video Nick! Thanks so much for covering this in your series. People have a hard time understanding what it's like to maintain a decent amount of running on a well-muscled frame. It's even different than someone who weighs the same but has significantly more bodyfat. The energy demand of active muscle is just intense and constant. Currently, I'm training out of San Antonio and trying to prep for a 100k race (Bandera) in January. This is on the tail of 2 completed trail 50k races this year.....the most recent on a torn ATF ligament in my right ankle. I'm also 36, 5'10, 212 lbs, 10% bodyfat (per InBody) and entirely natty. The amount of lifting that I have to do isn't nearly as much as one would think, but it HAS to be deliberate and it HAS to be progressive....those are non-negotiables. Also, the mental strength aspect factors in HEAVILY (no pun intended), but that's where distance running shows its true colors. To date (at 36 years old), I haven't found ANYTHING better for strengthening my mind and mood, which is one of the main reasons I think many of us do it. In short, it IS possible to be jacked and have great endurance.....but like Nick said, you have to embrace the process. It ain't easy, but it's damn rewarding. Love and light to you all, and keep grinding. 💛 💪🏾 #GoOneMore Coach Erick Caldwell Master Trainer/Metabolic Coach US Air Force Veteran San Antonio, TX, USA 🇺🇸 IG: @LittRomney_209

Nick just wanna say I’m a huge fan and a huge motivation! With that being said I just wanna say that training volume isn’t the only means to achieve progressive overload. You can also achieve progressive overload through higher intensity and lower volume training. A great example is the way that Dorian Yates and mike menzer would train where they would work up to 1 all out top set and go beyond failure. Sometimes too much volume can hinder your progress especially if you’re not training until failure or at least 1-2 reps from failure.
@Alexis-yj9op
@Alexis-yj9op Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Not everyone is use to this amount of volume and although it may work for nick, the average person won’t be able to recover from this if the goal is to hit the same muscle group twice a week. But if your goal is to hit a muscle group once a week, by all means
@melaniealtenkirch5165
@melaniealtenkirch5165 Жыл бұрын
The key to remember tho is that as a hybrid athlete he also has a lot of running to get to, therefore going to failure may not be the best. Volume suits hybrid athletes
@Alexis-yj9op
@Alexis-yj9op Жыл бұрын
@@melaniealtenkirch5165 True. But also Volume can tax the central nervous system which leads to fatigue which leads to under recovering. The average person may watch this video and think this amount of volume is necessary to put on size, when it’s not. You can accomplish the same weight gain, muscle building, and endurance training with less volume, more intensity, all while keeping your endurance training the same. Meaning your CNS isn’t as taxed, you’ll recover faster and better, and feel more energized through out the day. Just my take. We’re all entitled to our own opinion so at the end of the day, if this style of training suits you, by all means.
@commonkingslifts
@commonkingslifts Жыл бұрын
@@Alexis-yj9op That's fair, and for most people, probably is the most sound advice. However, if you go back into Nick's OLDER videos - 2014, 2015, 2016, almost all his training was higher volume. Many of his original self-written programs prior and during the Korea days were also high volume. I think he just prefers that style out of enjoyment, and it works for him. Everyone needs to run a few different styles of training and see both what they enjoy and what they receive the most growth from.

found this video very interesting and learned something again. didnt realise that you need to increase training volume with lifting. the same way increasing kms/miles a week to work towards a goal. because of this man i trained 3 months beginning of this year to run my first ultra marathon which i did, its something that ive seen on youtube but never actually thought it was possible and next month im going to do another but this time the goal is a quicker time.

Hey nick, I’m subject to the yearly AF 1.5 mile pt test. I bulked and been running for months now but I haven’t gotten faster. What do you recommend to do in order to go from a 11:30 to a 9:00? How many days a week and what to do on those days?
