I’m an APS-C hobbyist shooter and the majority of my photos are of city scapes, buildings and interiors. My 3 travel lenses are 1. Sony 18-200, not the fastest lens or the sharpest but for its range and the price, I don’t think it can be beaten. 2. Sony 16-55, I think it’s over priced but for interior shots, the constant f2.8 is wonderful. 3. Sony 10-18, a great lens both for landscapes and interiors. 4. Sony 35mm macro, don’t use it often but a very good macro lens.

Thanks for that list. I can also suggest to take a very bright 50mm in your bag. It's always good to have a bright lens and you'll be stuck at f2.8 with your combo. Let me also just add that more than the gear, I think the way you carry it, can make the difference, between a great trip and a painful memory. For the last 2 years I've been visiting Cambodia, Canada, Japan, Balearic Islands, Montenegro, Scotland and Tunisia. I do travel a lot, with nearly all my gear. The first thing you need is A VERY GOOD BACKPACK. Most are made to store a large amount of stuff, to be nice and (water) resistant, but very few are made to prevent your back to suffer. You need to choose one which has been made for your back. There are also very useful accessories, such as the Spiderlight backpacket kit (I'm using that) or the Peak Design Capture, which can both help your efficiency, but also help your back as they are balancing the weight (back and front). No need to say that messenger or sling bags aren't an option of you have heavy stuff to carry. But if you can take one in your suitcase, they can be useful when you only need 1 or 2 light lenses.

My three favorite APSC (I shoot with a pair of bodies - A6400 and A6600) travel lenses are the 12mm f/2 Rokinon, 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron and the 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS Sony, Since I shoot only stills, I don't really miss the OSS for the two shorter lenses and I have OSS in the telephoto . BTW: the Tamron's 42-112.5 mm equivalent focal length is great for people shooting - even for head and shoulders portraits while the lack of AF in the Rokinon is not a great drawback considering the Sony great Focus Peaking and Focus Assist capabilities combined with the short (18mm equivalent)focal length of that lens. I have an A7iii but, normally use my APSC format cameras for travel. If I were to choose three travel lenses for a full frame travel setup, they would be all Tamron and all f/2.8 (17-28mm. 28-75mm ans 70-180mm)... Note:I might switch the 17-28mm for a 20mm f/2.8 Tamron.

I've gone through several iterations of travel kits over the years even to the extent of having two separate kits, one for home and one for travel. These days I just have one kit for both home and travel. I just don't take all of my lenses when I travel. I usually take my 16-35mm f2.8 GM, 24-105mm G, and 70-200mm f4 G. My other two lenses are a 100-400mm GM and 200-600mm G. If I were to go on another trip which included photographing bears, I would probably take the 100-400mm lens instead of the 70-200mm. But, in general, over 90% of my shots are between 24mm and 200mm.

Sitting at home, I've had too much time to look at new photo equipment and just ordered the a6600 and the 16-55mm f2.8 G. I'll probably order the 70-350mm G unless there is something I don't like about the a6600 or 16-55mm lens. I just thought it would be fun to try a new system or have a system to take when I didn't want to take my full frame system.

I am on the APS-C system. My last choice, and which I was very happy with, was the SIGMA 16mm 1.4, Sony 35mm 1.8 (would have prefered the sigma 30mm, but couldn't fit them all in my small EDC bag) and the Sony 18-105 f/4, for the versatility and the telephoto option.

The lenses I'll bring on trip will of course depend on what kind of location I'm going to, but lets say I'm going to spend a lot of time in a city like New York or Tokyo, then it will be the 35mm 1.4 as my main lens, and then have the Sony 24-105 f/4 and a Tamron 17-28 f/2.8. That way my bag isn't too heavy and I can also throw in a travel tripod for those long exposure shots. If it's a trip to place like Iceland or similar location where I'll be using a car to get around and landscape or wildlife is the focus, then it will be the Tamron 17-28 2.8, Sony 24-105 and the Sony 100-400 f/4... and I'll also bring the 35mm 1.4 cos I just love that lens.

I can't believe it, I ordered the G Master FE 100-400mm super-telephoto zoom lens in corona-panic, as it was only one store left with the old price, 29.138 N.Kr. For the other stores the price had raised to 37.395 N.Kr.!!! I wanted the Tamron 70-180 mm, but these price increases on camera equipment in Norway now is insane! So now my GM 24 mm and the GM 100-400 mm will be my companions, together with my a7III.

Hi Stefan, thanks a lot for this video, i agree with you for the most part. Just to get a small wide angle i would go with the *samyang / rokinon 18 2.8* . For a zoom lens, the tamron for the price is the best value, but i liked the 24-70 f4 zeiss for it's short size and having OSS. For my pro work i just rent the *24-70 f2.8 GM* , i love the color rendering of this lens. As i don't shoot telephoto i just have the *85 f1.8* if i need to push in a bit, it's cheap and damn sharp, even wide open. For me having a stander zoom lens and a fast prime is all i need for documenting my adventures, and for pro shooting i just rent what is needed for the shooting. Take care Stefan, have a great day !

Hi Stefan Great video as always, very informative and to the point. I'm thinking on getting a following travel lens set to go along with A7riv: Wide and fast: 20mm f1.8 Normal zoom: 24-105 or tamron 28-75 Telephoto: 70-350 - to shoot it in 26mp crop mode I will also get samyang 45 f1.8 and will get 75 f1.8 for portraits. I have couple of questions, what do you think about this kit: 1. Is 20mm wide enough for landscape (I also shoot occasional stitched panoramas to cover extreme UWA) 2. In this kit will tamron or sony normal zoom fit better? 3. What a performance difference between 70-350 on a a7riv vs 70-300 or 100-400? I'm very cautions about the weight and I'm afraid that I will not take much heavier lens with me that often. Appreciate any thoughts on this choice.

Stefan, any reason for not recommending the Samyang/Rokinon 18mm f/2.8 (specifically, over the 14mm)? It's arguably a more useful [less extreme] focal length, and it's both lighter and cheaper than its 14mm cousin - so at first glance a better travel option?

Depending on the trip I'd add one or two of these: 1) Sony 16-35mm f/4 (for cities, & indoors) 2) Sony 35mm f/1.8 (for night & indoor) 3) Tamron 90mm A-mount (closeups in museums/nature) 5) Minolta 50mm f/1.7 (night & general).

A telephoto lens like even a 70-200 would be useless in a 5-day trip in 2-3 European cities, for instance - but totaly useful in a 10-day trip somewhere in Africa. On my next trip, somewhere in Europe when this sick situation with Covid19 will end, I'm planning to take my Samyang 24mm f/2.8 on my Sony A7 II camera. Only!!!

Counter argument: you should include a fast prime like a 35 or 50, never know if you need a low light lens and don’t want to go bumping your ISO with a 16-35 f/4 on

I would always bring the Sony 55mm 1.8 cos that lens is so compact, so lightweight and easily fits in any bag no matter what else you have. I have recently purchased the Sony 35 1.4 and even though its slightly larger and heavier than the 55, it's still relatively compact and that always goes with me.

Any suggestions for travel prime lenses? Even a recommendation for just one or two lenses.

I'm going with my Sony 24 f1.4 GM lens ( but would "upgrade" that with the new 20 f1.8- cheaper, wider and smaller!) my tiny Sony 35 f2.8 ( or maybe get the new f1.8 version) and the Sony 85f1.8. Job done and range covered!

A 24 or 35mm for overall travel maybe? Unless I know exactly what I'm shooting though, Ill always take a zoom when traveling.

@@idol031808 90 f2.8 is a great lens but slow to focus and relatively heavy for a travel kit- the 85 f1.8 is smaller lighter faster and easier to pack! The 24 f1.4 ticks all the boxes, though!

I would pick 1728, sigma 2470 and 70180. If I only allowed bring.one, then sigma 2470 f 2.8

Cant agree with you ! The 70 - 200 f4 does give you "wonders" at least as sharp as the 100-400 if not sharper ! Its the f4 version of the gm 2.8 !
