It was great to show how stories develop and how things are changed to fit characterization. We reviewed the 12 labors of Hercules from mythology and how they’re presented in the movie. It was such a great unit. I miss teaching. Sorry to be boring. Retirement is not always the best.

My favorite I-want-song is probably Waiting on a Miracle because it feels so genuine. Mirabel just spits out all her emotions that no one else would care to hear. Not to mention how smoothly it transitions into her song. It comes at a moment when she is emotionally isolated. It works so well in the context of the movie and still manages to be super relatable to people with feel overshadowed or useless, for example. And her I want song doesn’t even play out as intended for her! She thought she wanted a gift, but she really only wanted to make her family happy! It has you think that Mirabel will get a gift by the end of the movie; such a great subversion!

I think it is a shame that "Love Will Find a Way" from Lion King II Simba's Pride wasn't included (though five freaking Frozen songs were, not that I'm counting). It may be from a D2V sequel, but it's still a fantastic love song between Kovu and Kiara. Glad to see Anastasia getting some credit though. That movie was one of my all time favourites growing up, and one of the biggest reasons for that was the soundtrack, of which I have downloaded all of the songs onto my phone. "Journey to the Past", "Once Upon a December", "(If I Can Learn to Do It) You Can Learn to Do It", In the Dark of the Night", "The Key to Her Heart", "Rumour in St. Petersburg"... all of them earwormy hits that are just AWESOME to belt out.

Say what you will about the live-action Aladdin (I liked it personally), but that version of Jasmine made me love the character. I didn't care about her growing up. Her naivete and want to get out of the castle was not something that endeared her to me. The version in the live-action - that would have made her a favorite growing up. Someone who knew her mind, wanted to do more for her people, and had an inner strength. I loved it. Likewise, Pocahontas is problematic for many reasons, but I really enjoyed her characterization. Just Around the Riverbend is my favorite song from the movie. She is strong and dedicated, but conflicted and willful. I love her, regardless of everything else. So glad Anastasia was included! I think it's my absolute favorite non-disney animated movie. The music alone is amazing! Something There from Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites. It fleshes out the Beast the most in the movie. I like that the live-action and the Broadway expands on him more. I don't know how I feel about the top song being a duet that is really more the guy's POV with Jasmine as the harmony. I would have put Part of Your World as top, myself. When that one came up, I literally said out loud, but what can top that?
