Could not do without Irgazin yellow and I also like a granulating black, there’s a choice for me, Kremer or Aquarius. They are better value than DS. I also really like green earth pigments, and potter’s pink, though I can see this would lead to an even bigger palette, but who cares! I really liked the permanent Alazarin you chose, but could not see which it was, please post the manufacturer, this is a colour I need to replace. A shame because I have a large tube of JACKSONS alazarin crimson which is a gorgeous colour, but if it is fugitive it will have to go along with any other instances. I am not sure now whether you had an instance of PG7 which is another staple colour I love. Well done for putting this together, no convenience colours and no pastels that can be mixed anyway. (Mind you I do have these in budget varieties like White Nights, just for fun value.) It is always good to see a pigment being painted out, you get some indication of how it will handle. I could see some pigments do not wash out to white or very pale, for instance as they are so strong. A very useful and informative video, thanks.
@AllanJayQuesada

I love Aquarius and Kremer too. I wish they had tubes too. Permanent Alizarin? There is no P.Alizarin on the list or you mean Permanent Rose? I really see that pg7 is a staple color, but on my subjects, usually mix it with a red to get a neutral tint. pg7 is really strong and staining so it intimidates me using it alone. hehehe Thank you for watching and for appreciating my efforts too. hehe :)

Glad I have most of these paints. I think there are some newer paints that wasn't part of the testing on Handprint, probably. I think we could add W&N Transparent Orange. IT's soooo pretty.. and I'm not exactly an orange fan. Jackson's Art site doesn't list the pigment but I think it might be the same as Schmincke's Transparent Orange, PO71 (which is not in the top 40). I'll double check when I get home and check the tube. **checked the W&N tube but no pigment number listed. Just DPP for the color code. I'd say it's almost identical to Schmincke's PO71.
@AllanJayQuesada

W&N's Transparent Orange is PO107. It's also one of Jane Blundell's favorite orange along with Da Vincis Benzimida Orange or PO36. That make me curious.. I'm not an orange fan too, as a I prefer mixing them, but I hope I could explore the color more.🎨😁

I want to love the W&N with wild abandon, but my lightfastness test showed fading in mid to light washes after just four months in a South West facing window. It makes my head and heart hurt. It's THE most gorgeous orange, but, if it doesn't stay that vibrant? I don't know. Others seem to have different results with their lightfastness tests.

Thank you for showing the top 40 side by side :) Kimberly Crick also did massive lightfastness tests and brand by brand comparisons (all well documented on her website), and she found PB27 to be fugitive (the color may come back when stored without sun exposure for a while but not in light washes and this includes mixtures) and PV14 seems to be chemically unstable a better choice could be PV49. Kimberly Crick did her own list of her favorite lighfast pigments which includes in addition Potters Pink (PR233), Lunar Earth (PBr11), Cobalt Violet (PV62), Manganese Blue (PB33) and Mahagony Brown (PBr33). A little remark 🌼, Chromium green oxide is PG17 (PG18, Viridian looks more similar to PG7) but both are excellent lightfast 💕 other lighfast pigments are blues: PB71, PB72, PB74, PB86, greens: PG23, PG26, Fuchsite Genuine, Green Apatite Genuine, Jadeite, Serpentine, brown: PBr24, yellow: PY43 (natural form of ochre), PY53, orange: PO107/dpp, white: buff titanium (PW6:1)

I am surprised that these pigments did not make it on the list: cobalt blue deep PB74, potter’s pink PR233, quinacridone red PR209, genuine yellow ochre PY43, genuine red ochre PR102 and the rest of the phthalo blue family. I am not sure about the light fastness of these pigments, but at least the phthalo blues should be part of the list, especially the PB15:6. PY153 is no longer in production, so I do not understand why it was included. I am astounded that Bruce chose to omit the ochres, considering they were the very first colours ever to be used by humanity.
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 3 жыл бұрын
hi Ahmed. Thank you for your attention and keen observations. let's tackle each pigment you have mentioned. :) 1. PB74 is shade i prefer for warm blue. the reason that it MAY not be included in top 40 is it's not widely available. very few make that pigment, specially during the time when Bruce created the list. 2. PR233 is a lovely and unique color. I suspect it wasn't included as it is not usually a color for mixes, therefore not very versatile to be put on a palette (as recommended for top 40) 3. PR209 is included in the top 40. please watch at 6:35 4. PY43 is a color i am also expecting in top 40. Maybe, Bruce counts PY42 as a close sister of that pigment so he put PY42 at the top40 instead of PY43. 5. PB15 family (PB15:3, PB15:2, PB15:6) are all part of the TOP40. Please watch at 6:12 Also, another Phthalo Blue color in the pigment of PB16 is included in top 40 apart from the PB15 family. Phthalos are included in the top 40 both blues and greens. 6. PY153 This is said to be "discontinued", however, up until today, Sennelier still makes and create Sennelier Yellow Light using PY153. you may check this product link from jacksonArt www.jacksonsart.com/sennelier-watercolour-21ml-sennelier-yellow-ligh

@@awatercolourist I was rewatching this video and reading along with Handprint - I notice Bruce writes, regarding PY 42, "I like any of these paints in place of other raw siennas or the more opaque yellow ochre, which are more common watercolor artists' choices for an earth yellow." He certainly included PY 43 and the others in his reference, it just didn't make his top 40.
@awatercolourist
@awatercolourist 2 жыл бұрын
@@jennw6809 Hi Jenn! Thanks for your reply. I gathered as much from other comments. I understand his point; PY42 tends to be a touch more vibrant than their natural counterpart. Not always, mind you, Gold/Golden Ochre tends to be more vibrant. Generally, though, PY42 and PR101 tend to be more vibrant than PBR7, PR102 and PY43. I assume it’s because PY42 and PR101 do not have the impurities of their natural counterparts, but I could be wrong.

PY153 or gamboge is a rare color now.. some people say it is discontinued already. I was also surprised to find that Sennelier has py153. While their py153 doesn't look very gamboge, I still included it in the list to complete handprint's top40. Sennelier Yellow light is not very orangey but leans more to the warm side so I assumed it may be a 'variant' of the rare pigment. I'm not sure as I'm not an expert but if Sennelier's 153 is suspicious, then you can go for 154. Happy painting. ☺️🎨

Ultramarine Magenta: Only by Daniel Smith’s Ultramarine Red and Stephen Quiller‘s Ultramarine Violet Red Shade and also there’s PR259, Ultramarine Pink, avaliable by Roman Szmal, M Graham, and QoR only.

excellent chart...but few brands pigments are better than the list you mentioned may be bruce mcvoy of handprint's list little outdated because its done few years ago for example PG50 cobalt teal is best from QOR,DS version is too on greenish side...also your mentioned PR101 List are on opaque side many transparent red oxides from daniel smith and m Graham are there but anyway you mentioned B.sienna from W&N that's fine .why didn't mentioned PB29 from Davinci its gorgeous. also anthraquinone blue PB60 from m.Graham and cerulean blue and Cadmium lemon from M.graham both are rated high by Bruce in Handprint My REquest to you do a seperate M.Graham Review
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree,. I hope Bruce updates his list or maybe add 10 more to make it top 50. Some pigments like PBr25, PR102, PY43, Pbk11 are some of my favorite pigments that are also strong and lightfast but were not in the list. Yes, the PR101 are more common as opaque as Indian Red, Caput Mortum or violet iron oxide,, but it has more transparent version for thr browns of winsor newton and vangogh even ShinHan PWC. In some cases, as ive mentioned in the video, I personally chose the colors rather than following bruce's comment for two reasons.. either i dont have his recommendation or I prefer a certain version from another brand. for the PB29, I chose Old Holland because I based it on Jane Blundell's comment that the Ultramarine Deep of Old Holand is the most granulating PB29 ever.. But I believe, PB29 of Kremer is more granulating, unfortunately, I dont own yet a PB29 from Kremer.. Yes, I will review my MGraham soon.. currently, I have 43 tubes.. still thinking to add few more.. much happier if i could complete all the 70 colors. :)

@@SathishKumar-pw9fu when I bought my MGraham paints back in 2017, I had less knowledge about which colors and Pigments are great investment. I have very little browns, which is one of the strength of MGraham. So I'm thinking of adding browns. I have both azo orange and Cobalt teal and I must say that those two are great specially the Cobalt teal. MGraham cobalts and cadmiums are expensive but are worth it. Do you feel like the Rembrandt paints are better than MGraham?

@@AllanJayQuesada no MG have their unique strength..but Rembrandt introduced so many new pigments like pv55,pr202,,po62 and so many disk colors in fact all dusk colors are there in vangogh line too.i found Rembrandt's cadmium are little vibrant and flow better than MG in my opinion
@AllanJayQuesada
@AllanJayQuesada 4 жыл бұрын
@@SathishKumar-pw9fu The dusk colors in VanGogh areactually beautiful, but the pigments are just a mix of PBk11 and pv19, pv23, pg7 and py128. I am interested more to rembrandt's new colors though. I have some cadmiums of rembrand from the 12color set, and theyre really nice to work with i agree. unfortunaly, Rembrandt are really expensive in Philippines.

Love this. I have been studying Bruce's Handprint website since 2008 so this is nice to see. I was a little confused at 1st at your choices of the top 40 pigments because according to Bruce, the exact brand of those pigments can vary a lot or very little. So, I thought you would have those top 40 in the same brands he prefered. Then I saw one of your brands that is not mentioned on handprint and understood you are just putting down your own brands of those pigments. I enjoyed the swatching. Although my favorite Perylene Maroon is Winsor & Newton. Its a brighter more Crimson color than MGraham's version that is brown blood color in comparison. One of those that are very different in hue. Blessings!

@AllanJayQuesada 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Renee. Yes, most of the colors that I didn't follow in Bruce's preference were the items I didn't have. That got me curious about winsor and Newton's perylene maroon. I believe I have a tube of it from the vintage paint seller, but I didn't choose it because it was an old tube and the colors "may" be different now.. I'm not sure. So I ended up with MGraham. Thank you Renee. 🎨🙏😉
