Allan, I truly enjoyed this video. Your explanation and logic in laying out the colors of your pallet were illuminating. I, too, love Daniel Smith watercolors, and so your choices will likely affect my pallet going forward. Thank you. As an aside, I also really enjoy the lilt in your voice. Having spent quite a bit of time in the company of Filipino friends, it reminds me of all the best qualities I admire in them. It made your presentation quite relatable for me. Thanks again!

The way you have them organized is very smart.. I did the same with mine when I was learning color mixing and it was so much better than the typical "rainbow" layout with them grouped by hue (yellows, greens, blues, purples, etc). You can find your warm/cool primaries much easier and never have to guess what pan to stick your brush into to get the mix you are looking for. They can all look very similar when dried and it's too easy to grab phthalo instead of ultramarine for example when they are right next to each other.
@AllanJayQuesada2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, that's the point. I only push for the usual rainbow sequence when im using the typical tin when pans are lined in a long line and pans with gaps. Here, the grids give no space so puting related colors would help incase they mix. 😊
@waymire012 жыл бұрын
I know this is already completed.. but I would encourage anyone doing the same to pull out that molded well segment and use individual full pans. It's so helpful if you decide to change or reorganize a color. Also makes cleaning much easier since you can pull them all out and get to all the surfaces. You can also label each for easy identification. I've started putting everything into full pans, and it saves me so much frustration and waste of paint.
@AllanJayQuesada2 жыл бұрын
I definitely get your and I agree. That is an option i am thinking in time ive consumed all the paints in this brass grid. Or might have full pans now on the side for the times i am lazy and need my convenience color. This type of palette where colors are so close to each other and slots are challenging to clean are I think more dedicated to the likes of alvaro Castagnet who have a fixed and final color selection and who doesn't care much if his colors mix. Based on my personality, i have times i am OC to cleaning my palette and there are also times when Im ok with them mixing.
@lindyashford77442 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada not sure how I missed this video! I love the palette and the choices, but think you could easily dual purpose it by using full pans as described. Using a magnetic sheet and magnets on the pans you could have an easy to remove full alternative palette as well as have both at the ready when using it in the studio. Did you do a mixing chart with these colours? It is such a strong selection I feel sure there will be a lovely range. You sounded a bit nostalgic for some of the discontinued DS colours so I hope you have some left over…
@waymire012 жыл бұрын
Both bloodstone and serpentine are just convenience mixes. Both utilize PBK11 along with common pigments. They are easily mixed.. I would suggest going for PBK11 as you can use it to create a multitude of other "primatek", "dusk", and "supergranulating" colors.
@AllanJayQuesada2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Bloodstone and Serpentine utilize PBK11? Where did you get that information? I think there's confusion here. Daniel Smith's Bloodstones and Serpentine and the rest of the Primateks are not made of pigments, so they don't have pigment codes. The Primateks are made out of minerals and gem stones. In the case of Bloodstone and Serpentine, they're made of those mentioned minerals that's why they're also labeled as "genuines". I get it when you say they are "convenience" . but what I pertain to "mixes" are paints made out of 2 or more pigments. So Bloodstone and Serpentine being made out of a single mineral each, makes them not a convenience MIX. Bloodstone color may be achieved, but its texture of being matte and flat is hard to imitate. Serpentine's hue on the otherhand doesn't show any traces of black granulation, as opposed to your statement earlier stating it could be achieved using PBK11. What makes me choose serpentine is its being made out of the Serpentine Gem and the pink and green dual tone it shows.
@waymire012 жыл бұрын
@@AllanJayQuesada They were proven in lab tests to contain little if any of the "genuine" minerals and gem stones they were named after and contain mostly common pigments. This was a huge issue last year when the tests were made public. Kim Crick has reproduced many of them. Serpentine is PY150/PB15/PBK11. The lab tests were shared on world pigment day on instagram. Daniel Smith has addressed it yet refused to confirm or deny. Even Jackson's Art in the UK has addressed it on their blog.
@AllanJayQuesada2 жыл бұрын
@waymire01 oh yes, I remember the Primatek controversy. That was really something, and still I'm waiting for DS to declare the truth. For now, I'd hold on to the info shared on their tubes. But rethinking about the Kim's lab formula for Serpentine, PY150+PB15+PBk11, how come the DS Serpentine is not staining when PY150 and PB15 are known to be very staining? And also, where's is the pink dual tone coming from? Is that the little part of the real gem stone? These are my legit questions.. and I really hope one day DS gets really transparent about it.

I really love this layout, and the color choices you made! I find myself re-configuring my color palettes a lot for fun, and I've watched this video of yours several times while comparing similar colors and trying to figure out if they'd give me the range I was looking for. I think the only changes I would make, if I were to do this brass palette setup for me, would be to change 2 of the yellows - I find Hansa Yellow Medium (PY97) and Permanent Yellow Deep (PY110) to be a requirement - plus if you mix them, you get the ever popular New Gamboge! And then the Perylene Maroon I would exchange out for Perylene Violet (PV29); mainly because I have that, and I love the color so much, LOL! But they are very similar colors... the maroon is obviously more red while the violet is more... well, violet - and they are both muted earthy colors that lend themselves towards mixing dark browns and interesting shadows. But then, I do live in a different part of the world then you - so I imagine that the punchier yellows and the Maroon would mix more useful colors for your particular area. Great video!

Hello! I know it’s been a while since you posted this video, but I only just discovered your channel. I love the idea of a strong, pigment palette! I wonder if you have any single pigment color substitution suggestions for the heavy metal colors in your palette: nickel azo yellow and the cobalts? And, are you still using this palette?
@AllanJayQuesada7 ай бұрын
@silvertales hiii. Welcome to my channel. To answer your last question, yes, I'm using it now.. and I'm literally using it at this very moment for work, as i reply to you. Hahaha. Nickel Azo Yellow PY150 is a very unique yellow. It is one of the very few yellows (that i know) that's transparent and could be earthy, warm, and cool at the same time. I'm sorry, I could not think of any other pigment as close to its properties. But if I need to reallg replace it, say it's gonna be discontinued, i would pick PY97, Hansa Yelloe Medium. Not the same as N.Azo Yellow but is a good mid yellow that can sit between my Azo Yellow and Isoindoline Yellow. For cobalt blue, and cobalt teal, same. No other close replacements. Other brands, make imitations of the cobalts by adding white to ultramarine to achieve cobalt blue hue and white to phthalo blue+Phthalo green to achieve cobalt teal blue. If you need to really replace thrm with single pigments, you'd be forced to get some entirely different colors like Manganese Blue hue (PB15) and Prussian Blue (PB27). I just cannot imagine my palette without my cobalts. Haha. If it's health and environmental concern, just be really careful and responsible in disposing the waste water.
@silvertales7 ай бұрын
Thank you for the reply! My primary concerns with the heavy metal pigments is environmentally safe disposal, but you’re right in saying that as long as we follow good practices when it comes to waste water, it should be fine.

@@AllanJayQuesadaAlso, how do you find the Primateks work in color mixes? Do their innate granulation properties pose any specific challenges when mixing? I’m looking to replace Sap green with a single pigment and Serpentine looks like a pretty good substitute. I’m so sorry for all the questions!😅
@AllanJayQuesada7 ай бұрын
@silvertales no worries 😉 I'm a fan of granulation, so it never bothered my mixes. The primateks are good on their own, but mixing color to lighten ot darken it, enhances the color. Mixes don't get risks to being muddy unless they're too thick or in heavy mass tone. Keep them in washes and they'll be great.

Just add bit of yellow to PB16, and you can easily get a similar color to PG7, less the staining power. 😊

In my opinion Rembrant are better quality paints, Daniel Smith has a wide range of colors that come to mind, moreover I compared Schmincke and Rembrant, almost the vast majority of Schmincke paints are semi-cover and paints with strong granulation, , the watercolor has been totally changed with high-granulation paints, the paintings of some great masters look like they were painted with oil and not watercolors, titanium buff is used more and more to achieve special and I must admit magical effects.

I've been using DS for quite some time so I'm very familiar with it. I've only used 12pans of Rembrandt so ive yet to know it more. Id like to try more colors but through their tubes this time. The granulation and color selection are feats that will be determined by the artist so it varies. 😊
