They certainly made my young adulthood more fun. I became a Braves fan when we first got cable and their games were on TV almost every night on TBS. Unfortunately this was in the mid 80's when they were pretty bad. That all changed in '91 when they went from "worst to first" and started an epic decade with the Jones boys, Justice, Grant, Pendleton, and the great pitchers coached up by Leo Mazzone.

Andruw Jones was a big reason Atlanta's pitching was so good in the 90's (not to take anything away from Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz). When you had an outfielder that had that kind of speed and a natural sense to run to where the ball was going to end up probably shaved a run off of their ERA's. His ability to get a jump on on the ball allowed him to play shallower than most other outfielders and take away more hits than most other outfielders.

I'm noticing some Jones-Hall-of-Fame detractors due to there being a narrow disparity in fielding percentages across the majors throughout history. That's not the defensive statistic one should look at when judging Jones' defensive prowess. - Jones is one of five center fielders in history to record at least 400 putouts in a season six times (Willie Mays, Richie Ashburn, Kirby Puckett, and Max Carey round out the list). - Jones possesses the single best dWAR of any outfielder in major league history at 24.1. Mays, by comparison, finished with a dWAR of 17.9 (dWAR = how many more games a team won due to a player's defense than if an average player had been positioned there). - Jones ranks first in history in defensive runs saved by a center fielder, at 236. In second? Once again, Mays, a full 53 runs behind Jones, at 183. - Jones ranks 4th in runs saved across all positions, behind only Brooks Robinson (292), Mark Belanger (240), and Ozzie Smith (239). - Lastly, Jones is one of only four players in history to have won at least 10 gold gloves and hit at least 400 home runs. The others are Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., and Mike Schmidt. The popular opinion seems to be that Willie Mays was the best center fielder of all time, without debate. While that's perfectly understandable, if one delves into the numbers, there's only one player who could make a valid argument that he was just as good or even better than Mays, and that's Andruw Jones. If he doesn't get inducted, the Hall of Fame is a joke. espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/3520/andruw-jones www.sbnation.com/2013/6/6/4392890/andruw-jones-beef-animal www.hardballtimes.com/hall-monitor-the-case-for-andruw-jones/

He always played shallow and that allowed him to save so many hits and bloopers because he knew nothing was getting over his head. The whole Braves outfield was always good in those days but Jones was special. He also played with Ryan Klesko in the outfield and had to cover center and most of the field (right or left) that Klesko was in.

I agree with you completely that Andruw should be in, and I hope he gets in....I can't say he's the second best CF ever though....that would be Griffey or Mickey Mantle....I think what hurts Andruw is his career BA (which is .254, which really isn't that bad....a lot of people seem to think he was like a .200 hitter or something) and the fact that he really declined when he hit 30 (As did Griffey, FWIW, Griffey had a few good seasons post 30, but he really struggled with injuries during that period), and just really struggled to produce while he was still in his theoretical prime. That said, I believe he should be in, no questions asked.
@craigrozniecki15222 жыл бұрын
@@elliemyers6435 I'm just talking defense. Andruw Jones was the Ozzie Smith of center field. Griffey and Mantle were undoubtedly better hitters than Jones, but some players have entered the Hall for their defensive prowess - like the aforementioned Smith. Through advanced metrics, the only center fielder who has ever come close to Jones' defensive dominance was Willie Mays, and even he wasn't real close. How good was Jones on that side of the field? Griffey won 10 Gold Gloves in center, and is often heralded as one of the best to ever play that position. The updated numbers? dWar (defensive wins above replacement) Griffey 2.2 Jones 24.4 Runs saved on defense Griffey -19 Jones 254 Jones could have hit .190 for all I care. He was the best to ever play center field defensively, and it's not even very close. In my opinion, for that and that alone, he should be a Hall of Famer.

Absolutely. There were rumors going around at the time that Andruw was juicing like a lot of the players back then, but he wasn't, and I think he was even tested if I recall correctly. It's kind of like Shaquille O'Neil: he got fat and out of shape because of poor work ethic, which cost him a lot of games, stats and probably championships, and Kobe Bryant used to stay on his butt about it big time, and that was one reason why they butted heads and then the rest is history. With Andruw Jones, it may have been the same thing. Didn't work to shed, and loved to eat big time. If you've seen Andruw today, he's fat. He's not super overweight or anything, but he's definitely chubby and it's not because 'he got older', either, like some people say. No, he just retired, loves to eat and has millions to eat anything he wants at anytime. Must be nice!
