Thank you all for watching and leaving feedback! I just wanted to mention that I don't think beginner games necessarily have to be easy. I don't think that truly came through in the video. This is a challenging genre and that's part of the appeal. Beginner-friendly games in my mind often have clear objectives and may include training/easier modes. :)

Great video! I expected the CAVE collection to be here, and I myself am trying nowadays to clear Mushihimesama (already did Novice Original and Maniac, going for Normal). I didn't, however, expect you to mention ZeroRanger, one of my favourites of all time and totally worth it!

Great video!!! I like how you mentioned the bullet visibility in crimzon clover, very important point!

Thank you! It was something I struggled with early on when I discovered these games so I thought it was worth touching on! :)

Fantastic video! Started with Crimzon Clover and excited to dig into the others. Really appreciate your narration and varied suggestions.

I second your recommendation of ZeroRanger. I'm a total novice in this genre, but found it very easy to get into, without the game ever feeling like it's going easy on me. It really wants you to beat it, but wants you to feel like you earned it.

FML. I watched the video, read this comment and finally, after months of research, decided to finally start my shmup journey with ZeroRanger! It's sounds perfect. Except it's only on Steam. Nothing in my home can run Steam. Well, that's disappointing...

Novice difficulty in Espgaluda II was my first 1cc for a Cave game, and only on my third or fourth try. The Kakusei mode that slows down enemies and bullets allows for some easy outs and is very beginner friendly.

Good stuff, thank you! I'm deep in the woods working on my shmup Interstellar Sentinel which has grown out of my life long love of shmups too!

ZeroRanger is such a great game. Personally, I'd also recommend Batsugun Special, which was one of the first if not the first modern Bullethell game. 1st loop is quite forgiving and teaches you alot of the basics you need in any SHMUP, like misdirection, weaving, etc.

I know this is an old video, but for new people comming here, a few beginner friendly recommendations. 1: Bullet Hell Monday: Finale, it's on steam, and mobile apparently, and it's completely free to play and the monetization is not predatory at all, you get a lot of content for essentially free, and it's such a satisfying, fun, and very rewarding to play, a very nice introduction to the bullet hell genre. 2: Star Parodier for the PC Engine CD, this one is essentially a parody of the Star Soldier series of games, it''s designed to be beginner friendly, despite the difficulty spike on the later stages, but trust me, it won't take long for you to be able to 1cc this game, especially on the easier difficulties. (Also one of the playable ships is a literal giant Bomberman) 3: Flame Zapper Kotsujin, probably the hardest game of these 3, but still very fun, and rewarding to play, the bigger challenge is simply acquiring a rom of this thing to play, as it is a pc-98 exclusive, but if you can track it down, this game is a pure adrenaline rush with sick weapons, enemies, bullet patterns and a great soundtrack. 4: This is more of a series recommendation, since anyone talking about bullet hell games apparently has an obligation to at least mention this series, but.... there's no way around it, it's Touhou, it's fucking Touhou, more specifically, Touhou 2, also for the pc-98, but much easier to track down than kotsujin, it even has an english patch, so you can follow the goofy story. The reason I recommend this, is because it's actually much easier than one might think, I'd say it's comparable to the difficulty of Star Parodier, and the game showers you with resources, like easy extends and extra bombs, I only played this game for 2 days, and I'm already so close to getting a 1cc on normal and being able to see the true ending. As for why Touhou 2 and not 1, simple, the original Touhou wasn't even shmup to begin with, it was more of a weird blend of breakout/arkanoid and shmups, so... yeah...

I echo Mushihimesama, it was the first bullet hell shooter I ever tried, and really opened up my eyes to the sub-genre.

That's a good list of games. I particularly agree with the Cave ones. While they aren't easy even on the novice modes, they are well-made and likely to give even new players that awesome rush of bullet hell. I'm not a very good shmup player, but man, I love dodging bullets in Mushihimesama. I'm a little mixed about Zero Ranger. I think it's superb, and not overly difficult in the long run, shmup. However, I find it's just a little too tough for absolute beginners not used to Nintendo Hard. Not that they can't finish the 'easy' mission with a little perseverance. I just found that new to the shmup genre players hit a wall, sometimes as soon as Arc Adder, and give up. Especially if the new player doesn't quite understand game density. They just see that after 5-10 minutes of a game they keep losing, and think they are terrible. Even with Zero Ranger's encouragement, they think such short runs means they're bad at the game. Me, I'd change out Zero Ranger for RagingBlasters. As RagingBlasters is much, much easier while being very simple. Plus, there's co-op. Then after getting some confidence, and possibly earning their fist 1CC, going to Zero Ranger to get their butt kicked just a little.

Thunder Force V. As someone who does not play the genre, i felt the difficulty was quite on point and fair overall.

A great shmup for beginners also is Neko Navy: super simple, you unlock credits the more you play, you get extends very easily and you MUST bomb in order to score! Plus it has a pretty chill mood.

Well good thing I've listed a bunch of beginner-friendly games you could try :P And yeah, they can go by a few names I guess. Shoot-em-ups, shmups, scrolling shooters, bullet-hell, danmaku...Same thing with slight differences depending on who you talk to :)

To me, I always wanna suggest QP Shooting Dangerous and Trouble Witches for newbies but they play way too different from most shmups. Honestly, its really tough for me to recommend games for this fantastic genre.
@Game_town3 жыл бұрын
Those are both games I've been meaning to try out. I don't think them being different from traditional shmups is a bad thing. I think newer players could benefit from seeing how broad this genre can be :) Anyway, thanks for watching! I'm adding those two to my immediate "must play" list!

Sonic wings 2 is an awful recommendation. Not for beginners, just an awful recommendation. The words “complex mechanics” are mentioned but not explained. It’d probably be an idea to gloss over the basics of what that might mean for beginners. The truth is, there are NO schmups for beginners. You just choose one you think you’d like and get to know it. Try to CC the chosen game on the easiest mode after doing what you should do with all schmups, which is to just have some fun first.
