Squats were well-selling. Their removal was due to GW giving their Nordic theme to the Space Wolves and deciding there couldn’t be two armies themed similarly.

@@JohnathanJWells yeah, they ultimately changed their minds on that. But that was the reason multiple GW people have given in interviews over the years - they felt the Squats couldn’t keep the Norse theme but they couldn’t come up with a replacement theme that they liked well enough. It also probably didn’t help that back then, the company didn’t assign new codexes or dictate which came next. It was literally individual studio members creating a pitch for what they wanted to do and the studio heads green-lighting it.

Squats were actually one of the most successful model lines GW was producing when they were discontinued. It wasn't financially motivated to remove them: Games Workshop just didn't like them and wanted to start from scratch for a new take on 'dwarves in space' but never got round to it besides a couple of obscure Battlefleet Gothic models piloted by a fairly forgettable faction called the Demiurg, who are now incorporated into the Tau empire in some capacity.

Yeah I was gonna say, they've actively said before that demand wasn't the problem. And yeah the models look goofy and bad, but so do a LOT of 1e and 2e models. I've seen the orks from that era.

I suppose there's an opportunity to create something from a relatively blank slate but if I had to pick between the two I think squats are just a lot more entertaining and characterful, even though they're not really that appealing to me given that they're likely to be allied with the Imperium again and it's not like there aren't enough factions on that side. Maybe it could be retconned to make the Demiurg into the descendents of squat seditionists/pirates who were absent when the Tyranids attacked and joined the T'au as a means to ally themselves with a force that would allow them to strike back against the Imperium, whom they believe to have deliberately left their home system to die.

I would love to see that. My biggest gripe with the guard at the moment is that it is very Cadian centric when the guard is a force meant to represent a thousand worlds. It would be a great addition.

This is a 6th ed player who never got to live the 2nd ed experience that were the Squats. Yes, they definitely do look goofy nowadays and are a product of their time but players like myself still look at the through rose tinted glasses. If GW ever wanted to bring the Squat back then they'd do well to appeal to the average model train enthusiast and create a line of modular vehicle minis that can all interconnect to build the infamous battle train.

I came down to the comments to say exactly that, it was never a lack of demand. Gsc had a lot less demand and the only thing that kept them alive was making them tyranids - and you can't say there isn't enough demand for them. Squats sold quite well.

And it's a real shame that you are not much of a Fantasy enthusiast, because both the Empire Huntsmen and Free Company Militia definitely deserve a return, I miss them dearly! I loved the kasarkin, i only started Imperial Guard bcus of them. But the metal models were bad casted (mine for sure) so i sold them bcus i thought they will sure get plastic models, they were to good looking 😄😅 i customed my other imps in to half way kasarkins, with plates and stuff bcus i loved the look

What bothered me about the Banshees bit is that the models released before the ones shown are actually better than both the ones shown and the new ones, by a country mile (in my opinion, if nothing else). I think they were sculpted by Juan Diaz, but I could be mistaken. They were (sadly) only around for a couple of years IIRC.

One of the worst things about them was that the line was so skimpy. "Here we have some warriors, here we have some more of those same warriors in practically the same pose. Here we have a vehicle, and another of basically the same vehicle but with more weapons." They had very little to offer in variety, but those jetbikes were pretty awesome!

Eldar Autarchs, Farseers, and Warlocks. Every single one discontinued was a great looking model. There were so many of them as well. GW is missing some desperately needed variety for these models currently.

Yes! I loved my Warlocks! I was a pretty big fan of the Autarch too, but I never used one in a game LOL. I was more into vehicles and guardians. People would flip out at how many vehicles I would bring, mostly because in a lot of cases not only was my stuff painted very well (I'd hear "I've never even seen a grav tank assembled all the way, let alone painted"), but in some cases I would have some unique looking conversions too. Miss those days.

They just have more personality, very dynamic poses and despite there only being only like six different sculps a lot of diversity in design. The new ones just suck they have zero energy and their design is just boring and tame just for the sake of it, and that applies to most of the new slaanesh models.

Hand sculpts deserve fond appreciation and is a style like any art that was of it’s time and means. It’s not as if there is a question of GW going back to such or there being a genuine debate of which is superior. Just depends on when you got into this stuff. That form of mini-craft that is made today is now niche and boutique, sculptors with a vision of a certain era and feel; Catering to those of us whose hobby was made up of that style, put in actual use as our playthings, not just purchased as a curiosity. It’s a deep fondness and genuine love of the look. Also, I dunno where this shade comes from regarding Tomb Kings (which shouldn’t be the case cause they’re in the desert) that I’ve heard not just from here but all about recently; They were always well loved as far as my experience went?Pick them apart and you may as well go down the line of every trope. Mummies are cool, and I just can’t appreciate that they are unoriginal just cause they parallel Egyptians. I enjoy things with real world significance from the well of our collective experience; Makes them feel closer and representative of something realistically fantastical. I dunno, I guess that’s my two cents. I agree the metal Daemon Prince was superior. Even though the plastic kit does have everything you praised regarding, including the vent head choice.. It’s just as you implied, lacking something..

I love all the metal gorka-morka characters, the 2 spanners that were repurposed as mekboyz in 40k and the scrap prospector are my favorite. I really liked the comedic tone and the mischievous and sinewy orks of that era (I guess they were meant to be emaciated from being stranded?). Also Diaz Daemonettes - I know everybody has a different idea of what Slaanesh should be, and that the appropriate level of 'sexy' in grimdark is hotly debated - but what I love about these models is that they look alluring from a few feet away, but then as you go in for a closer look you notice the noseless faces, the razor talons, the extra sets of nipples and your "Aww yiss, boobies" goes to "oh no, pain". This reminds me of the very first demon from the very first chapter of Berserk and I love it.

I agree that Squats as a faction aren't really all that necessary. But it could be fun to have a Hero or maybe alternatively a small Unit (no pun intended) maybe a refresh of the Squat Trike or a variation based on the Space Marine Trike or Quad. But before that happens I really really hope for GW to do a full line of plastic Death Korps of Krieg.

In 40k universe, squats fit as a support unit for rogue traders. In story, they got picked as mercenaries by Elucia Vhane or other explorer ( I have small unit of squats in my rogue trader army).

I've heard some rumors that some of the remaining squat colonies, that didn't get muched are set to join the T'au, with most people speculating that its a matter of Tau space and Squat space being fairly close to each other on the galactic scale. The first disaster of the tyranids almost destroyed them, then a few centuries later the galaxy splits in half with the psychic awakening stuff, so the idea is that T'au, being fairly humanitarian helped them out, and now the squats are bound by honour to help them. I think this would be a great way to add them. 1) Show that human-offshoots CAN leave at peace with aliens 2) If they are bulky and fight like typical dwarves, they would solve the Melee weakness of the T'au. 3) They could still have an upgraded version of Exo-armour and feel distinct from space marines because of how much their new allies would distinguish them from the Astartes. Mind you, this isn't from a great source, Some friends spread the rumor to me, and I didn't get the source from them, so Its probably all fake, but I like to dream of T'au aligned Squats

I get where you're coming from with the old sisters, but I'm gonna make a case for the metal Saint Celestine. I love the cloak being lifted by cherub servitors to mimic wings, the flowers adorning the sword guard, and her sad face. It gives a vibe of someone trying to copy an angel, rather the modern Celestine who is more actually-angelic. She's a model that holds up well even if you can notice some dated aspects. Also the Vostroyans. Other Imperial Guard regiments are just [blank] but with laser guns, and Cadians are kinda dull. Then you've got Vostroyans, who are still identifiable as Napoleonic era Russians, but they have metal armour and chain-mail and this weird mix and wood and ornate laser muskets and it's the right combination to be awesome and still fit into 40k.

I've got three of those old Mk1 Land Raiders, they need a little bit of fixing up but at least I finally got round to stripping the old paint off. I remember as a kid when those things first came out; even then I think *everybody* noticed how unbalance they looked with the bottom of the wheelbase being so short. But they _are_ a lot more customizable than the modern Land Raiders.

I do love the old Tomb Kings sphyx. Have 3 myself - one of each variant - that I still need to paint up - just waiting to see whether TK make it into the old world game to decide whether to put them on rounded or rectangular bases. Honestly, the entire top list could be drawn from the old tomb kings line. Not just the sphyinxes, but also the Skeleton Chariots (as wonky as old school gw skeletons are, the chariots still somehow look great), plastic tomb guard, ushabti, both great weapon and sword & shield tomb king, Settra, Khalida, screaming skull catapult, casket of souls. So many fantastic models. I love the ossiarch range that has sprouted up in their absence, but every day I still miss the tomb kings.

i do love that sphinx looks awesome. yes still alive jay :) oh i remember when they brought out the space dwarfs they sent me 3 lots of them when they first went over to plastic. oh how i hated them paint would not stick to the plastic. etc was a strange plastic they used back then. painted about 3 of them then gave the rest away due to the plastic.

4:26 the first battle reports I watched had the Tomb King Sphinx model for a Thousand Sons daemon prince. Imagine how let down I felt when I saw the actual model for a daemon prince and the fact that there's very little thousand sons prince conversions.

I liked the old Striking Scorpions models, they looked slimmer & sleeker, almost like Eldar ninjas. When they released the new models in the 2000s the mandiblasters got too big & they were given Predator hair, and they looked too bulky for their battlefield role.

I also really liked the old ones too. They never did much for me other than tie up units for a while, they were oddly resilient. But I haven't played in a long time, don't even know how they are in the latest version.

Some of the older miniatures that i will really miss are Akeold Helbrass since he looked pretty cool to me, also Van horstmann on his two headed dragon was a cool model that i will miss along with doom rider in 40k.

What I would love to see is squats, imperial beastmen, and the weird looking walkers revamped by forgeworld like the old land raider. The Horus heresy needs models for the Militia/cults army list, and a retro styled guard model range with land raiders, chicken walkers, and squat bikers will be a blessing from the emperor

I can see that the new Plague Marines are much better miniatures, but I really dislike the cartoonish style. The old ones did look so much more evil.

I couldn't agree more with the old metal (you said Finecast, somehow?) Daemon Prince... I gave mine the wings from the Marauder Wyvern and attached the power-plant exhausts to them... It's a bit on the short side, but the detailing on the guy is on par with anything produced today! And yeah... Squats have a place! Look at those power-armoured AoS flying dwarfs! Add one of those Ambull bots... You got kitbash heaven there, for the grimdark Mecha sci-fi army the Tau can only dream to be!
