"Cherry Audio hasn't launched anything new yet." Dude, it's only been 8 weeks since GX-80! 😄 Thanks for the great video, we'll be interested to see the reaction

CR-78. Stunningly good. Has the sound and the feel of the real thing we used to use, but with additions that push it over the top. Using it behind real drums is just magic, as was common in the late 70s early 80s. It just sounds great, did I say that? And the simple programming is fantastic as a bedrock of the sort of music I’m doing at the moment - kinda mid-80s ‘alternative’ as we called it. Sort of what became indie but before genre-ification spoiled everything, and nobody felt they had to stay in their lane so influences and styles were pulled from everywhere. Anyway, I’m doing a project of an album of my songs that were never recorded or sold for whatever reason. Usually because they weren’t finished. And using tools like the CR-78 allows me to adopt workflow very close to how all that great music was made.

Voltage Modular is easily my #1 hands down no question. The most single indispensable desktop plugin I use. After that I use DCO-106 and Quadra a lot they just sound amazing with breath control. Some of the newer ones are growing on me a lot like Miniverse (Minimode) and GX-80. And Sines and Elka-X which I really should use more.
@AlexReidStudios2 жыл бұрын
Those are really good too! I usr Votlage quite a bit, should get more into it
@julianmorrisco2 ай бұрын
Do you have a breath controller? I really wish I’d bought one but they seemed too expensive for an impulse buy when Yamaha still made them. And the idea of buying a second hand one with someone else’s (someone I don’t know) spit caked inside doesn’t appeal. I have a VL-70m and one or two other Yammy odds and sods that take the BC-1. Dammit. I suppose I just need to bite the bullet, buy one on Reverb and see if I can soak the thing in hibiscrub and just not think about another person’s cooties…

I bought the DCO-106 and the GX-80. Both are great products, and I feel especially nostalgic about the DCO-106 because I used to own a JUNO60. But my all time favorite is the Voltage Modular. It is without exaggeration the most powerful soft modular synthesizer ever made. It is a product that should be more widely known to the public, I firmly believe.

The only ones I have from the list is Dreamsynth and Mercury-4. I also have Quadra, DCO-106, Eight-Voice, and Polymode (and I got all six plus their Stardust tape echo for $40 total through some great bundles over at HumbleBundle). But the others I would love to pick up one day. Especially GX-80 and Elka-X. PS-20 and the new Chroma also look great. Cherry does an awesome job with their synths, and they are priced pretty aggressively with frequent discounts. 4:19 Tree LFOs! But are they oak, maple, or pine?
@AlexReidStudios7 ай бұрын
I should make an updated version of this video to include some of the new ones. Also I think the LFOs are oak :)

I was looking at the Roland boutique Juno synths and got the DCO-106 on a whim due to how affordable it is. Now, I have since added their Miniverse, PS-20, GX-80 and Voltage Modular. Been considering the Mercury-4, but haven't got around to it yet as I'm still messing around with the ones I have as well as hardware synths 🤣

Great video. And so very much appreciated. I've almost all the CA gear and like you I have some favourites for different purposes. The one I use the most is the PS-20. Like your choice of the Mercury, it gets the most use because it is easy to set up and - importantly - modify with a midi controller for live plays. Its filter it bananas! So it's often my lead. It's a scratchy, angry beast. I love that sound. I can definitely see why you chose the Mercury though. The Dreamsynth comes in at #2 because it sounds like my childhood and is very versatile. It is often used for my rhythm or pads. Elka is #3 as its so very lush and flexible. It is becoming an all rounder in my collection. However, I think once I get my head around the GX-80, the the Elka will have completion. My #4 was not on your list. It's the Eight Voice. I just adore its depth and timbre. It is often the heart of my soundscapes or pads. And very easy to hook up with a midi controller for live playing. #5 is a tie. Sines and Voltage. Both are great for experimental work. They are toy boxes. Voltage is astounding and once you learn how to create your own modules, there are no limits. Sines is quick weird fun. Based on this video, I'm going to fire up the Mercury and have a play. That's what I really enjoy about your videos. Always inspiring.

Great selection! I like a lot the soubd of a dirty MS20 filter. Eight voice is also really good. Is hard to make a top when most of the synths are excellent. Other one I like a lot is the Polymode. I just find it to have a really unique sound

This is exactly my CA synth list. With a runner-up to add would be the DCO-106. I know I said it in one of your other videos, but the GX-80 would be really nice with an ARP panel. Thanks!

Their two Oberheims are really nice too. The SEM is so simple, but I find it really useful. Sometimes, I just need a good bass, then I realize the patch sounds good as a lead up a few octaves. Sometimes I double them up and pan them differently to double the epicness of that filter. I just got the Eight Voice and that gives me 8 SEMs, but I'm just scratching the surface of it's capabilities yet. I don't have Sines or DreamSynth yet, but they're on my list. I don't need the Mercury -- I've got the TAL J-8, which is an amazing Jupiter 8 emulator. Thanks for the review. It put the Elka on my radar.

I've enjoyed all the demonstrations that I have heard, but I only have the Mercury-6. That being said, I really like that synth. It's simple without being too simple. I especially like the bass tones that I have been getting out of it, lately -- it makes me think of industrial but with a subtle cinematic flavor instead of EBM. I did have my eye on another synth of Cherry Audio a while ago when I was going through a wavetable craze. Dreamsynth looked especially appealing to scratch that Ensoniq itch. However, I'm not going to be buying any more software for a while -- can't seem to stop using Bitwig's built in instruments for nearly ALL my synthesis needs. Everything else is just a... [cough]... Cherry-audio on the top of the production sundae.

The Elka X, is the only Elka Synthex, that comes to the real thing, or atleast trying to. Now i dont want to start any negative comment, but my opinion about other software vst Elka Synthex simulation, are , ohh boy, really bad, the only Synthex vst, that does the job quite well is Cherry Audio Elka X. Now dont believe that Elka X, is as good as a real Elka Synthex, it is’nt, i mean, it is virtual impossible to emulate a real analog synth, 100%, maybe 95%. The GX80 is a wonderfull thing, and infact does the job quite well. The only thing, i am not so happy about, is the reverb in Elka X, GX80 etc, not as good as Arturia. That’s why i do bypass Cherry Audio builtin reverb and use the Eventide Black hole vst reverb plugin, which is phenomenal. Sometimes it is nice to see low price high quality vst synth, instead of shelling out wast amount of money on very expensive vst’s. Then again, if you need the best of the best, like Spectrasonics, Arturia, then offcourse you will get the best.
@AlexReidStudios2 жыл бұрын
I really like the Galactic reverb included in the newest synths. And I agree with the GX80, I even like it more than the CS80 V!
@henrik36572 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm, i think i will perhaps buy the Arturia CS80V ?!!. Maybe its just me, but the reverb in Cherry Audio’s synth’s , is a bit metallic, and synthetic, you just dont hear that in Eventide reverb or Spectrasonics Omnisphere fx, which is awsome. But other than that, Cherry Audio are doing a great job making really high quality vst synth, no doubt about that.
