@@kdmigloo You haven't noticed yet how little your opinion means? :)
@raygunsforronnie847 Жыл бұрын
@@kdmigloo Yeah, I've seen a bunch of stuff that makes my OSHA-sense tingle. There is probably a 30 minute compilation reel of "don't try this at home, kids" or "don't drive like my brother" shots from their garage-mahal build. Sounds like a project for an AV nerd that just finished the OSHA 30.
@plumbbuild6517 Жыл бұрын
@@kdmiglooif you have opinions like that you should definitely keep them to yourself because I’ve not seen many builders I would let build any for me but their an exception I would let them build my house. But I’ve been building and plumbing since the 80s so I’ve built all my houses and many more and plumbed all of them aswell. So until you can show your work or how safe you say you are. Please don’t be so dang rude I don’t know you but I imagine your mom might slap the crap out of you for some of your opinions, again just guessing because I don’t know you.

I love it! Also, I think the term for a garage with a living space above is a carriage house. Paul is in great shape for 60yrs old and having a titanium hip. If this house was in my town he could take the old house apart and put the debris out and put prices on it and it would be gone within an hour. Hell, if it was in my town, the garage would have been razed & all materials would have been stolen. I like the idea of putting something on the outside for when you're adding siding later. I think using pvc boards is cheaper though. Would love to find he video with the detail on flashing above. No puncture zone! LOL. Good idea though. I love seeing collabs like this.

I was chatting with an engineer about this a couple days ago; a hinge point in a gable wall with a gable truss is apparently a common mistake. When I was building my house, the truss designer on my house included a gable truss on the first revision, but I already had an engineered gable wall so this was caught immediately. This is fine if you have flat bottom chords to brace to, but with parallel or scissor vaulted trusses, fixes like this are often required. In Canada gable walls like this have to be engineered beyond prescriptive code. I noticed it when they were showing a shot of the trusses from the interior, and was going to comment. I'm glad the builder realized and remediated the problem.

You didn't talk about putting a spray paint line on trusses when they arrived so they all get installed in the same direction, keeping the home square. They come off the massive wood planer a bit thinner on oneside. Who knew.

The author does like to from scratch, kzbin.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

Flimsy gable ends are a common problem/mistake. I have specified PSL 5.25x5.25 for the plates and the contractor was wondering what I was doing. I even had to specify steel horizontal/vertical in some cases. You also have to detail all the connections between the plates or verticals to the roof diaphragm for some fairly high wind load. It is a finicky thing to deal with. It is those kinds of details that actually take more time than doing all the sizing for the rest of the house. That is where all your design time money goes.
