My favorite minor faction, thus far, has been Carchemish. It sits on the borderlands of three areas (Assyria, Hittite, and Canaanites) and, historically, it was a major fortress of the Hittites and Mitanni as well as the capital of a Syro-Hittite (Neo-Hittite) kingdom after the death of Šuppiluliuma II. They even adopted a title, 'Great King', as a possible means of claiming succession to the Hittite legacy. Anyways, I had this roleplaying idea of taking the Hittite throne with a multicultural army of Canannites, Assyrians, and desert nomads. It has been a pretty fun file thus far!

Played as Assyria (not hanigalbat) for my first campaign in dynasties it was awesome as hell, super dynamic first hundred turns, i didn’t actually gain traction and retain borders until then. Then I started steamrolling finally

Anywhere in northern Mesopotamia or central Canaan seems the most chaotic and hard to predict campaign in a good way. Can go so many ways even with player in the midst trying to enact their own plan. I've heard Ramses can get like that as well but his start position just seems more secure but I have yet to start there.

@@AlanLamb11 ramsess is about a 50/50 on how fucked you get in 15 turns. But entertaining. I find the tide of battles much more interesting in Mesopotamia tho.

Thank you, i was very interested in Assyria and i was surprised it wasn't a major faction, but now i see it's still very interesting!

The game is good to my surprise, it introduces many innovative, creative features that improve gameplay. Things like hiding on the battlefield is now more realistic, providing armies with many tactical opportunities that were used in real history. One of my best tactical execution happened in this game.. not in attila, rome 2..etc My issue is that the game is a bit confusing.. as Ramssess , I understand I work for Mehetpah pharaoh, he says that during the introduction.. but according to my diplomatical stance, we have no relationship im not even his vassal.. Also my father is Sethpa... but when i engage in diplomacy or look in the family tree, there is no information whatsover. You would basically not think that it's your father.. He talks to you as if you were some random minor faction. Good game but requies tweaks and changes here and there.

My first campaign is as Napata. My faction leader is Memnon who is an absolute badass, get access to Nubian units and start in a really interesting area of the map. Finding it really fun at the moment, basically get to form the Nubian dynasty of Egypt early I love it

Also Napata right now. All the deserted regions north of you are just free for the taking and i love it

Also the Nubian Longbowman outranges even slingers and does pretty decent missile damage. I've been pretty much winning battles with Memnon thanks to them.

I tried out ithaca on very hard. Ones you know, how to open and what way to go first. There absolute beasts. Turn 19now. Got all 3islands at home, the territory north (those moonflag faction) together with AJAX entire province. Fixing my 2e unit of noble archers, and invading sparta as we speak. Try it out, there awesome

I would deff add Thrace as well, starts in a corner, great units

i struggled with food playing as Thrace, every turn i had to sell wood to get food and i couldn't keel it going, i gave up. I will play Thrace again, this time i will focus on food precisely

Elam deserves some love, unique culture and unique native units that then you can recruit elsewhere, if the roaster was more varied it would be awesome, but I hope modders make an overhaul

I want to shout out one I haven't seen mentioned much: Sutu. They start on the edge of the map with easy access to bronze and gold and a natural ally in Irsu. More importantly, their camelry is actually kind of insane and can be recruited from turn 1.

I was looking at that faction. The choice paralysis is too much for me. I’m torn between starting in Greece or taking over Mesopotamia first

I wish we had got an iron age dlc campaign pack where we could have played as new factions like Medes Persis Lydia Judah Edom Ammon Qedarites Urartu Mannaea Scythians etc

Setnakhte is the best for a historical playthrough, especially if you manage to become Pharaoh and confederate Ramesses. My favorite faction so far

Cimmeria is in a tough spot, but their unique cav is insane

Before one of the patches you could toggle the random command option in order too get a command as a minor faction. I really hope we'll see modders work on these minor factions since most would be fine with a copied command from a other faction and 2-3 unique buildings, like a unique wood building for Thrace that give less wood but access to low tier Thracian units

What about Memnon? I feel like him being all the way down in Nubia, at the very southern reaches of the game means he isn't boxed in and only needs to go up, while also not having to start the game beefing with anybody. Plus he starts off with some pretty good food producing regions, which makes for a good early game push as you can spam trash units at your first few turns. Also, while his unit roster is less impressive than Amenmesse (who also has access to Nubian units) and lack any strong melee infantry, chariot and cavalry units. The fact that he can also recruit Nubian Longbowmen and their stronger renowned version is pretty strong in my books. While the Nubian Longbowman as pretty average missile damage, their range is insane. In fact, they can outrange pretty much every other missile unit in the game, including slingers. Seriously, they are pretty broken in the game.
