Dude this is so amazing. When I was in high school I was just fiddling around and I found the “game changer chord.” I thought for all these years I was the only one playing it! Thank you for finally telling me what the hell it is! The other chords are amazing as well
@wilsonsguitarlounge82443 жыл бұрын
That 4th chord can also be looked at as a Gmajor7/B. It's technically a major 7 drop II voicing, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a special inversion of a major 7 chord (3-7-1-5). It's used a lot in jazz and I think it works great in metal when its used as a major chord.

honestly ive been learning so many new prog chords from the band novelists, feels like every time i check out their tabs i see something new and half the time its super simple like why didn't i think of that the other time i'm like this dude has alien squid fingers to be able to play that ahaha
@phunkym82 ай бұрын
hell yeah the 'game changer' is my favourite chord too. i think i learned that one from some j rock song when i downloaded random tabs for guitar pro like 20 years ago. j rock is so chord heavy compared to western rock and metal where 99% of chords are simple power chords.

Your B power chord (B5) IS...its just got the 5th on the bass; this process can apply to any power chord. Power chords can take lot of forms not just Root-5th: there are b6th, 1-5-9. 1-b5th. That "beautiful" chord is a minor 11th and that voicing is used a lot by John McLaughlin as in the track Follow Your Heart but also in Belo Horizonte.

Hi maté thanks for the video Your playing and music you put together is as good as anything I’ve ever heard and your connection to the guitar is incredible and beautiful to watch and hear so cheers you deserve a career that’s for sure… Man if I can ask a question and you don’t have to answer but I’m only starting out late in life so my question was how would you recommend for a learner wanting to play that style in particular? I’m learning the pentatonic scale but it sounds the same every time!! Or who could I check out musically who I could try and learn tabs maybe because I don’t know much and maybe learning some shapes and sounds from tabs may help?? Any ideas from you would be fantastic. All the very best mate Chris Australia
@razor7166 Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for your comment! I always recommend trying to learn songs by the artists you are most interested in. When I first started playing, I tried to learn as many dream theater songs as I could because I was obsessed with their music. It doesn’t have to be dream theater, but I would recommend a similar approach. Prioritize learning songs you love in the style, and eventually you will learn to speak the language. If I had to recommend a good starting point, I always suggest intervals. Intervals music is not as technique intensive as a lot of other prog guitar stuff, and it really allows a good intro into the style. Hope this helps!

@@razor7166 Thankyou so much for your helpful words and encouragement because it definitely seems very overwhelming at times. I’m saying that it is also inspiring watching someone like yourself who is mind blowing on a guitar Mate honestly you just look and sound incredible and the music you played that was your own man was so good I hope you find what you seek because every guitar and music lover should see and hear you playing…. All the very best and although I’m not big on the social media you have a loyal fan here mate Take care Chris 👍

Nice video. That reaction on your face rings louder than the chords.
Easier to play the minor 9 chord with the thumb playing the bass first finger playing the bar and pinky the 9th

How about a power chord with an added open b and high e string? (John Petrucci uses those a lot)
@tourtelk8414 жыл бұрын
I think it’s called the Alex Lifeson chord
@Yorgivgm96184 жыл бұрын
@@tourtelk841 Yeah it can be a Lifeson chord if played in F#, but Petrucci plays it all around the fretboard.

@DrSMILE-xc1dp Жыл бұрын
can this play in every drop tuning?
@mato2677 Жыл бұрын
Drop tuning has slightly different shapes but they are a lot easier shapes than standard cause you can bar the first 3 notes and still have the other 3 fingers free to fill it out more of the chord

@Brian.A.Simmons3 жыл бұрын
Enough with the prog chord reference! These are simply jazz chords (with distortion). And I didn't go to Berklee to understand that. I listened to Di Meola (a lot)!
@mato2677 Жыл бұрын
Well your jazz chords are just chords, its the contex you play them that makes the genre not the chords themselves
