Popovich won it with one team and stuck with the team all the way. He didn't have a Shaq, Kobe, Michael or Scottie Pippen on the team. He had Tim Duncan, Kawhi Leonard(way before he was a superstar), Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. He didn't acquire any of them in a trade. He coached them from the ground up. Phil inherited his players and knew what he was going into before he went on to the team. Doesn't mean he's a bad coach, ofcourse not, he just doesn't have that edge that Pop does.

Sorry Pop is not the best out of that group! Auerbach has 9 titles and Jackson has 11. Jackson won those 11 titles within a 16 year period. There's no way in hell pop can pull that off. Pop had great talent just like Auerbach and Jackson but both coaches won more titles than Pop did from the point that they started winning titles. Auerbach won 8 in a row while Jackson won 6 in 8 years. Pop doesn't come close to that, not at all. Pop is in a dismal 3rd place when it comes to winning titles compared to Jackson and Auerbach.
@angelaweston8274
@angelaweston8274 4 жыл бұрын
@@vincespell the fact that you base your opinion on # of titles and actually count those celtics titles in the same way as modern titles shows that you know nothing lol. You really want to compare the modern NBA to the 50's and 60's where the game literally looked nothing like it does today with players who were dentists and mailmen during the day? Watch some film before running your mouth. The modern competitive NBA starts at the mid 70s-80s. And if you think Jackson is the main reason Jordan, Pippen, Shaq, Kobe and Gasol won titles you're an idiot. He went to NY and tried to coach from the stands and that failed miserably. Stfu for gods sake. Popovich found nobodies and made them all stars and won titles with nothing compared to jackson and kept 1 team in the playoffs for 23 seasons w no high draft picks after duncan.
@haiguike
@haiguike 4 жыл бұрын
Pop is #1 because of the structure that he builds and how he continues to evolve and improve well into old age like fine wine. About 1/4 of the best coaches in the league today came from his system and mentorship. His decision and ability to get Tim Duncan to take over the Spurs is amazing. If I were an owner, there would be no one better than Pop. However, if I’m just focused on 3 years to win championships with superstars, there’s no one better than Phil Jackson. Three threepeats may never be repeated again. I will say Kerr has a chance, but he learned more from Pop and D’Antoni on coaching, and psychology from Phil.

Any list I've seen always has Auerbach, Jackson, Popovich, Riley (in any order) as the top four, but few can agree on #5. But if you ask me, #5 is John Kundla. But I get Larry Brown being on this list. He is a successful coach (#7 or 8 on my list). But I disagree with this video - Auerbach is #1 hands down if you ask me, because his influence over the NBA is second to none. He led a defense-first team-centric focus, now fairly widely embraced league wide, dominated the 60s (facing and defeating teams stocked with HOF players), and launched a massive coaching tree with no less than five former players of his going on to have successful coaching and management careers. And no less than three of these Auerbach alumni went on to spawn their own trees - so that today, there are few NBA championship teams that cannot point their success back to Auerbach in one form or another. The Lakers and their 10 championships were built by Bill Sharman. The Spurs were led by Popovich, who owes his job and success to Don Nelson. The Miami Heat were built by Pat Riley, a Sharman disciple. And the Golden State Warriors were built by Jerry West, a Sharman disciple.

1. Phil Jackson 2. Red Auerbach 3. Gregg Popovich 4. Pat Riley 5. Larry Brown Making arrogant stars like MJ and Rodman work together for 3 full seasons is enough to grant the spot and you add making Kobe and Shaq work for as long as it did and you have a genius. Then you have Auerbach coaching a team that consistently kicked Wilt Chamberlain's team ass in a league without 3 pt as the only real competition for the top spot. I cant see the logic for having any one over them.

This is disrespectful to red aurebach who has more championships as a coach and general manger than any other person in the world. I don't think there is many coaches that can win 11 championships in 13 years. Phil Jackson wasn't loyal and Popovich hasn't won nearly as many championships as Red. I don't even know why Pat Riley and the other dude are there. Pat Riley got carried by Magic Kareem and Worthy.

Auerbach is way ahead of the others. The Celtics we know would not exist if it were not for Red, as coach and then as manager, his decisions made the Celtics great. Pop is also great, brought to the league a new style of basketball. Phil Jackson and Pat Riley did great things in great teams, which would probably win with any other coach as well. I personally like and respect the work of Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Jerry Sloan. These guys had more impact on their teams

All great coaches but ... Auerback ALWAYS won with Bill Russell ... never without him. Phil Jackson ALWAYS won with Jordan or Shaq or Kobe (i.e. the best player in the league at the time, never without him). Popovich ALWAYS won with 1997 No.1 overall pick Tim Duncan ... never without him. Larry Brown? 2004 Dream Team (only coach to NOT win gold with a Dream Team). Oh, and his stint with the Knicks. G.O.A.T. Pat Riley (yeah showtime was great). Reason why, he won with a 2006 Heat team that did NOT have the best player in the league at the time. An Awe-inspiring Dwayne Wade and Shaq, but still, he won WITHOUT the same player(s) on his team to LEAD him.

Pop has had 1 top 10 player (Duncan) Phil has had THREE (Shaq, Kobe, Jordan) not to mention most people call MJ the GOAT. Phil didn’t even coach them to greatness, they were already great. Pop coach Manu, Parker and Leonard to greatness. Not to mention Pop changed his schemes as the NBA evolved. Phil only ran the triangle. That wouldn’t work today, it’s why he cratered in NY. Pop is the greatest coach of all time.

Phil Jackson 11 titles/6 in an 8 year period. Red Auerbach won 8 titles in a row. Popovich has won 5 titles in a 14-year span. Let's DO THE MATH PHIL JACKSON WINS 6 TITLES IN 8 YEARS AND 11 TITLES IN A 15 YEAR PERIOD. RED AUERBACH WINS 8 TITLES IN A ROW, AND GREGG POPOVICH WINS 5 TITLES IN 14 YEARS. LOL... I GUESS BEING THE LESS EFFICIENT MAKES YOU THE BEST

Jackson has 13 rings... 11 as coach... there's no reason Pop deserves more credit than him. Also who were u counting ahead of Jackson's win pct? Joe Prunty? Who coached a grand total of 12 games... or Steve Kerr who'd coached in the league for one season at the time this video came out... ? Where's the consideration for how difficult the personalities Jackson had to manage were?!?!?! Are you seriously telling me it's hard to coach guys like Duncan, Robinson, Leonard, Ginobli and Parker?! All of whom are extremely coachable, don't have big egos, and are inclined to play team ball... Compare that to Shaq & Kobe!? MJ?! RODMAN?!?!? CMON mixed tape videos... This was a huge miss for you guys and you rarely miss.

The list should start with Red at #1. Red never had an assistant coach and he was the GM as well. His genius is written all over the NBA. The modern NBA was originated by Red and he got the International game going as well. Phil Jackson is so overrated it isn't funny. He always went to a situation with a title contender already in place. He had tons of assistants who did most of the work. Larry Brown was a great coach but what did he really originate? and how many assistants did he have? Pat Riley was a great coach but he didn't win like Red did. No one did, not even Pop. When one looks objectively it is clear that Red was in a class by himself. Pop comes next and then Larry. But before Jackson I'd take Jerry Sloan, Lenny Wilkins, Don Nelson, and Chuck Daly. Did I mention that Red had no assistant coaches and was the GM too? lol

Im Spurs fan and im.glad to.see that but Pop no deserve for nr1 by 2 ,and maybe 3 reasons- battle agains mavs 2006, game 6 in 2013 and kawhi leonard destroying in 2016. I could add a bad roster politicy after kawhi "injury" and thats why now spurs are in shit.
